MM&Y closing for replacement

Won't happen. The cost to operate and maintain those projectors far exceeds the cost of installing and maintaining the Christmas lights. Those things are not designed to run for hours on end. One month in the holiday holiday season would be about the equivalent of a year of use on those things.

The more likely is just eliminating the lights all together.

Yep. I do not mean they would leave the projectors on all the time but rather they would program in the effect during the show. The rest of the time they would just use the new LED light system they installed to illuminate the castle like they do year round.

I'd like to see them take the castle lights budget and give Epcot a better seasonal add. In other words, a Lights of Winter replacement.

The castle lights have become iconic and beloved in a crazy short period of time. They aren't going anywhere.

EPCOT has a TON of holiday offerings for day guests, can't Magic Kingdom (The most visited park) have one? Because unless you go during the busiest week of the year, they don't....

Sadly, I thought the Lights of Winter were iconic too. While I don't think they make a change, I won't discount that one could happen.

Ehh.. commercial projectors like these are designed for long run times. It's part of why they are so huge.

What do you think your local theater does as it runs almost 12hrs a day 7 days a week?

Aren't these a step up from the projectors you find in a theater? I really do not know much about them.

These projectors are higher level than what there is in a local theater. I have a friend who has worked on both the Soarin' and MM&Y projection systems. The MM&Y projectors are more prone to problems because they have a very tight operational range in less than ideal environmental conditions. They get a lot of PM. You also have a much higher intensity projector lumen wise than a local theater. These are all factors that increase both cost and shorten the life of components. Disney has to do a lot more work to prevent failure on MM&Y since, unlike something like Soarin' it just can't shut part of it down and only go with one side. One projector goes out and it kills the showings for the evening. Now, I can see the projectors being integrated in the firework show. I just don't see them wanting to risk them on doing holiday projections for hours on end. That is not what they were setup to do.

Hopefully this refurb will lead to the elimination of the asinine Phineas and Ferb sequence and restore the great Julie Andrews to the show. The first time I saw it without her, I nearly ran away crying. The fact that she, a true Disney legend, got the ax in favor of that stupid platypus irks me. What's next, replacing the Walt segment with Jake and the Neverland Pirates?

Ok, now I actually don't wanna see it on my next trip. Thanks, Disney Channel for ruining something great. (This coming from a 15 year old btw)

I'm curious if they would build in LEDs on the Shanghai castle to avoid the need for the netting installation each year.

China doesn't widely celebrate Christmas, does it? I'm honestly not sure, I'd be happy to be proved wrong. They do like winter though if I recall correctly.

Christmas is an increasingly popular holiday in China, especially among younger people. It's largely celebrated as a secular holiday, though -- while many people follow the three traditional belief systems (Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism), the country is officially atheist.

I fully expect Shanghai Disneyland to have a Christmas "season" and celebration (along with one for Halloween, etc.). I think all the greenery in the front half of their park will look quite nice if strung up with Christmas lights.

They participate in Holidays around the World. This was at the China Pavilion last year:

It would be awesome if they somehow combined a show like Wishes and MM&Y into one show...fireworks spectacular + castle projection, the guests would LOVE it.

I really wouldn't like this because it would just be an excuse to reduce the amount of pyro. Keep the projection show and fireworks separate.

Martin is a very reliable source.

Yes, I realize that (I'm a lurker here); however, I find it a bit odd it's not on any public calendars yet. I know Disney has announced things last minute, but this is getting really close. It's not even on the Travel Agent refurb calendar yet... Not doubting Martin at all, but perhaps it got moved back? Martin, can you check your internal calendars again and see if the date remains the same?
