MLB Playoffs Pick-Em!

October is here, and the postseason has arrived. Let's have some fun! Whether your favorite team made the playoffs or not, everybody can take a stab at winning this playoff pick-'em contest and earning...well, nothing, but what else are you doing for the next 5 minutes?

To play, just pick the winner of each playoff series and how many games each series will be decided in (bearing in mind that the first round is a best-of-5 format).

Points will be awarded for correctly picking winners, with bonus points awarded to players who can also divine how long a series will take to be wrapped. You have to correctly pick the winner of a series to get credit for correctly picking the number of games the series will take. Correctly saying that the World Series will end in 5 games, for example, only gets you a bonus if you correctly picked the team who wins the World Series.

Here's how the scoring will work:

Divisional series correct: 1 pt.
Divisional series # games bonus: 0.5 pt.
League Championship correct: 2 pts.
League Championship # games bonus: 1 pt.
World Series correct: 4 pts.
World Series # games bonus: 2 pts.

Since the baseball playoffs are relatively short, I know the possibility of a tie is probably greater here than it would be for other sports. If it looks like a tiebreaker could be needed, I'll announce one before the World Series starts.

So with all that out of the way, here are my picks:

Divisional Playoffs

National League
New York Mets over Los Angeles Dodgers, 5 games
San Diego Padres over St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games

American League
New York Yankees over Detroit Tigers, 5 games
Minnesota Twins over Oakland Athletics, 4 games

League Championships

National League
San Diego Padres over New York Mets, 6 games

American League
New York Yankees over Minnesota Twins, 7 games

World Series
San Diego Padres over New York Yankees, 7 games

Congrats to the Twins and Tigers for finishing ahead of the White Sox.

Even though the White Sox didn't make the playoffs this year, it's beautiful to see that some people still consider them the standard by which champions are judged.

Heck, the folks in Minnesota even needed Ozzie Guillen to give their team a nickname. Maybe people in the Twin Cities were distracted by the promising season ahead for the Vikings. Ooops! That's not it.

And congrats to the Tigers for fulfilling everyone's expectations by choking in the end! Then again, maybe the players are smart. If they get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, they can leave Detroit.

Three hours and some change until the first pitch from the Metrodome. Let's get some more players before things get going.

One final bump. Half an hour until gametime, then we're off to the races.

We gots 10 people playing so far. Let's squeeze one or two more in before we get started.

The A's are getting to Santana early. 3 hits and 2 runs in less than 2 innings so far, including a homer from the Big Hurt.

Santana has calmed down since his rough start, going 1-2-3 in the last 3 innings. Now his team needs to find some offense, down 2-0.

(Three people picked the Twins to sweep this series, and nobody picked the A's to win it.)
