October is here, and the postseason has arrived. Let's have some fun! Whether your favorite team made the playoffs or not, everybody can take a stab at winning this playoff pick-'em contest and earning...well, nothing, but what else are you doing for the next 5 minutes?
To play, just pick the winner of each playoff series and how many games each series will be decided in (bearing in mind that the first round is a best-of-5 format).
Points will be awarded for correctly picking winners, with bonus points awarded to players who can also divine how long a series will take to be wrapped. You have to correctly pick the winner of a series to get credit for correctly picking the number of games the series will take. Correctly saying that the World Series will end in 5 games, for example, only gets you a bonus if you correctly picked the team who wins the World Series.
Here's how the scoring will work:
Divisional series correct: 1 pt.
Divisional series # games bonus: 0.5 pt.
League Championship correct: 2 pts.
League Championship # games bonus: 1 pt.
World Series correct: 4 pts.
World Series # games bonus: 2 pts.
Since the baseball playoffs are relatively short, I know the possibility of a tie is probably greater here than it would be for other sports. If it looks like a tiebreaker could be needed, I'll announce one before the World Series starts.
So with all that out of the way, here are my picks:
Divisional Playoffs
National League
New York Mets over Los Angeles Dodgers, 5 games
San Diego Padres over St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games
American League
New York Yankees over Detroit Tigers, 5 games
Minnesota Twins over Oakland Athletics, 4 games
League Championships
National League
San Diego Padres over New York Mets, 6 games
American League
New York Yankees over Minnesota Twins, 7 games
World Series
San Diego Padres over New York Yankees, 7 games
