On this date, Bob Gibson threw his nineteenth complete game of the 1968 season. Matching up against future Hall of Famer, Phil Niekro, at Atlanta Stadium, Gibby limited the Braves to four hits as he collected his ninth shutout of the season. Gibson’s best was needed that day as the Cardinals managed to score only one run of support, making it the second 1-0 game Bob won that season.

With the win, Gibson improved his record to 16-5 with a 1.04 ERA over 24 starts. Over his last 14 starts, Gibson was 13-0 with a 0.70 ERA.

BREAKING: Murphy traded to Cubs



The Cubs have acquired Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy, reports Robert Murray of The Athletic. It's not known who else is in the package.
The Nationals have set up a news conference for 3 p.m. ET, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.

In the final year of his three-year contract, Murphy is hitting .300/.341/.442 with six homers and 29 RBIs. The 33-year-old opened the season on the disabled list while recovering from microfracture surgery on his right knee and returned to the field in June.

Something I heard during last night's Mets broadcast made me wonder: what was the fewest pitches thrown in a complete game in MLB history? Baseball-almanac.com provided the answer - I'll put it in a spoiler for anyone that cares to guess:

On August 10, 1944, Charley "Red" Barrett of the Boston Braves threw not only the shortest night game in history at one hour and fifteen minutes, but also the complete game with the fewest pitches ever. Barrett needed only fifty-eight pitches to shutout the Reds 2-0 with only two hits and no walks.

The Cubs have had a brilliant trade deadline (both waiver and non-waiver). Getting Chavez, Hamels and Murphy for practically nothing?
