MK Upgrades

Do you really, truly expect Al Lutz to say "Joe Smith in WDI is considering" instead of "WDI is considering" or "Mary Jones in TDA's Marketing department on the 3rd floor near the Xerox machine has stated" instead of "Buzz around TDA is"? If Al Lutz started naming his sources, his sources would be fired and go silent within days. And then all we would have to talk about is the new condiment bar at Tomorrowland Terrace or the different bedspreads recently installed at the Polynesian.

exactly. If this were a new guy spouting out random rumors, then the sources would have to be questioned... but we've seen time and time again his information being true (even down to some specifics)! As far as I'm concerned, Al is a source himself.

Very well said. :)

Personally, in my opinion, if WDW had an Al Lutz of their own their standards wouldn't have fallen as low as they have in the first place.

I agree. Without folks like Lutz and 650,000 AP holders keeping a close eye on everything, Disney thinks they can cut corners in Orlando and no-one will notice. It's about time someone said "enough".

Haunted Mansion is going down for about 18 weeks starting in March (as of the last I was told).

Interesting.
I had heard that originally....then heard that Jungle had been bumped into that slot.

Either way.....I like it.

LEE - will the JC rehab be a general cleaning and update? Will it include any of the new scenes from the DL JC that were added for the 50th?

Hmm... We're planning to go down in August, and also bringing my cousin Aaron who's never been there. Now, my visits are few and far between (3 times: 92, 98, and 04) and the Haunted Mansion is my favorite ride, not to mention the fact that I gotta take Aaron on it. I've already showed him some footage. Anyone here who could give me information, please, I'm begging you. Do you think the Mansion is going to be down in August? I can survive with the Jungle Cruise not being up, but it would be a terrible disappointment if there was no Mansion on my trip.

speaking of referbs. did the country bears ever get anything? when i was there the sound stinked and the aa's were a bit twitchy

Standard maintenance (as usual).... additional touch-ups may be added, but probably not the "Tiki Room Treatment" that Ouimet gave Disneyland's aging tropical serenade in '04/5, which replaced birds and completely overhauled the sound system....

If only MK could get a massive Tiki-bird refurb that would change our show back to the original (and the one still seen at DL and nearly the same (i think) as TDL's). "Under New Management" is awful.

I'm looking forward to seeing both Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain, and especially Haunted Mansion all getting some MUCH needed, WELL overdue TLC.

Yep.... I understood it was too until JC understandably jumped the queue. Poor Space Mountain is relegated to the back again.

Disneyland is the only park that still shows the original 1963 show. Tokyo changed their out to a different show. Although the Tokyo show is a tribute to the early 60's Rat Pack Vegas Lounge era the Disneyland show is grounded in. The Tokyo birds now have names and personas from a 1960's lounge act; "Scats" is the Frank Sinatra character, "Dano" is the Don "Tiny Bubbles" Ho character, etc. There's even a girl singer, "Lava", who is sort of an aging showgirl who can still belt out a soulful and jazzy torch song.

The Tokyo Disneyland Tiki Room is simply fabulous. They remade the original show entirely, but kept all of the grace and style and charm of the original with a 21st century sensibility to it. It is everything the Magic Kingdom Under New Management show is not. When I saw the Tokyo Tiki Room in late 2005 we fell in love with it instantly. The CM hostesses were adorable and perfect (as all Tokyo CM's are), and we laughed so hard we cried. In the course of 3 days at Tokyo Disney Resort we ended up seeing the Tiki Room three times.

The Disneyland Tiki Room still looks and sounds like its fantastic 1963 original. The WDW Tiki Room, on the other hand, is an embarassment and truly horrific to witness.

Ah- thanks for clearing that up. It's truely a shame what they did to our Tiki Room at MK. Maybe one day we can get our old version back...

Speaking of refurbs...I wonder if Peter Pan is eventually going to get some TLC-it was looking quite horrid just a few months ago.

I think it is great that HM, JC and SM will be getting upgrades but people need to stop saying that POTC at WDW got upgraded, it only got updated. They did not upgrade it with new lighting and sound like DL got. The new scenes look and sound great but when you get to the old scenes they sound just as tinny as the 70's.

I believe Jungle Cruise now has the spring timeslot and Haunted Mansion will close from May through Labor Day. Kinda sucks for the summer visitors but it's about time they do it.

In Al Lutz and Kevin Yee's defense, they are no longer just sharing their opinions and pretending they are the law. They photo-document their comments and they are usually dramatic. You might argue they go LOOKING for problems but I have seen for myself the neon burned out at MGM and trim lights out on Main Street, and it's cheap and trashy looking. It goes beyond "giving Disney a break." The simple fact is they are accepting standards with their lighting that some Six Flags parks wouldn't accept (though not all...). I hold a piece of chipped paint in some hidden nook of Epcot as a completely different issue than MANY burned out lights on Main Street or a braile sign at Epcot ripped to shreds. Trashy. And to suggest that the Haunted Mansion is not in a horrid state right now would be absurd. Even the ghosts don't want to live there anymore. I would argue Mr. Lutz has been rather accurate with his rumors for awhile now, and Mr. Yee has at least gone from outlandish essays to better reporting of specific cases with his new "Declining by Degrees" material. Do you pay $70/day to ride a Splash Mountain plastered with bubble gum? I don't believe I should be expected to "give Disney a break" on that. It's simply unsanitary. A thought--install cameras in the gum-plastered tunnels (I would actually be shocked if they didn't already have such cameras) and kick people off the ride for the rest of the day for throwing gum.

I noticed that too, but this was a couple years ago. It was actually shocking at first. Shame they haven't done anything to fix it in the last SEVERAL YEARS.

Out of the three dark rides at Magic Kingdom, Peter Pan was looking the worst. Disneyland's Peter Pan has all of those fiber optics that just look so great; they even beefed them up a couple years ago, and they keep it looking so fresh and clean. WDW's Peter Pan, on the other hand, is still grounded in 1970's technology. Tired and dusty and broken 1970's technology at that too.

I just don't get it quite frankly....

WDW Magic Kingdom only has three C Ticket dark rides to worry about and maintain. Disneyland has SEVEN C Ticket dark rides to worry about and maintain, and Disneyland's dark rides are clearly better maintained and kept up and freshened regularly. (Example: Mr. Toad closes for 5 weeks later this month for a rehab, and then when Mr. Toad opens Alice In Wonderland closes for 5 weeks for a rehab into the Spring. And both of those rides are based on old and rather obscure movies that won't be generating big DVD sales anytime soon. Disneyland is spending money on regular refurbishments for these old low capacity C Ticket attractions based on non-trendy Characters simply because it is the right thing to do.)

And if you throw in the Monsters Inc. ride next door at DCA, then Anaheim as a whole has EIGHT dark rides to worry about and maintain.

You would think that a maintenance department and their management that only has to worry about three dark rides would do a better job than a similar maintenance department and their management that has eight dark rides to worry about.
