I am not sure if I have the name right and I apologize in advance but why did they get rid of the sky ride....... I only rode it once but it was such a cool thing to do

I think they got rid of it for liability reasons. The un-enclosed Sky Cabs would make it too easy to jump or be thrown out...

I think the name was Skyway.

The cabs were enclosed with a locked door. However, I believe you are correct that the ride was closed for liability reasons. The ride seemed to always be broken stranding people over Fantasyland.

i believe a hired contract fell and became critical and passed away trying to perform the routine maintenance on the ride cars.

they closed it for liability reasons.

Like most other attractions that close at WDW no official reasons were ever given to justify it. Skyway had a number of problems and it is a pretty safe bet to assume that some or all of these factors contributed to its demise. Those problems included the aforementioned liability reasons. It was only a mater of time before someone dropped a brick on someones head or decided to make their own version of jack@$$ by jumping off. It is also my understanding that there were also a number maintenance issues with the attraction. From what I heard (insert salt here) replacement parts basically had to be custom made. Lastly was the view took away from the magic by allowing you to see into backstage areas. Add all that up and it equals a closed attraction.

... before the world became PC (I'm talking late 70s), the Magic Kingdom used to sell water pistols, I think as part of the Pirates ride. Anyhow, I remember going on the Skyway with my little sister (my mom and dad would be in another car) and fire away with my water pistol dousing the people in the cars coming the other way.

It was great. They'd all get really :fork:, but we were like, what are you going to do, get off on the other end and chase us down on the opposite end of the park?

That was a blast. I still have some cool pictures I took of people my sister was hosing down with her water pistol.
I sure wouldn't get mad. That sounds like a godsend on a hot WDW afternoon.

The water pistol story is pretty funny.

Our family, especially my dad, used to love taking the Skyway across the park. He was interested in peeking backstage and basically in all things mechanical. We just thought it was cool to be up high.

Speaking of high - some kids from my high school band got caught smoking pot in the DL Skyway and were sent home to GA the same day, missing their opportunity to march in the Disneyland parade and the Tournament of Roses parade.

I've seen several threads discussing a lack of space to build a new attraction... How about the unused Skyway area in Fantasyland?

I'm glad we weren't the only Disney H*llians. Another contributing factor could have been little brats who thought it was funny to drop little candies (tart-n-tinies) from the buckets onto unsuspecting guests below. I don't know anyone who did that. I'm hesitant to even speak it. I don't wanna get flamed on the boards. :fork:

I would have loved to see everything from above but it would hurt the magic a little.

Was there any need for a skyway though? It's not that far from one end of the park to the other

It was a very cool perspective to see the tops of the buildings and how different/plain they were from the facades. 20K Leagues was awesome to see from above. I don't know that Pooh's little playground would be as entertaining, tho. :(

My Mom lost her sunglasses while on the skyway in some guy's hamburger, and he TOTALLY followed us screaming all the way to the end. On the bright side, my Mom got her sunglasses back!

I wouldn't say there was a "need"... the ride wasn't all that fast. Considering the time spent walking to the platform, waiting in line (if any), loading and unloading you could probably walk the distance faster.

It was cool seeing everything from up high. But you didn't get that sense of "wonder" that guests probably had when the ride first opened. These days "skyway" type rides are more nostalgic, from a era of amusement parks of the past. Not exactly what Disney World is about (especially Tomorrowland).

So I don't really miss the ride... but I wish they'd do something with the stations. I'd rather have any ride than vacant space.

I'm surprised the sky buckets at Six Flags over Georgia are still up and rnning, but they are. And yes, people like to be "clever" while they're riding them and toss things out. You learn quick to steer clear of the skybucket's "footprint."

I think they closed it as a precursor to WDW's attempt to be more health conscious. First that, then no trans fats. What will they do next to make America healthy?!!! Ha, yeah right...
