So I'm trying to make plans to get some of our group up to Lake Mary while we're in Florida to assist displaced people there. Right now it's hard to find out who to contact, but I'm making progress.

That's so great betty! Good for you! You have such a big heart girly. I'm proud to know you!

I talked to Dave this morning about maybe going down there during our April break to help rebuild. I want to run it by some people at church tomorrow to see if I can get some of our youth group interested.

Jamie's problems started when he was 3 years old and never quit his entire school life. He had ADD and was on Ridalin (sp?) for years... he got so used to teachers just taking an "I give up - this kid is hopeless" attitude. It used to make me so angry, he's really quiet and has always had kind of a punk rocker look throughout high school. He's ridiculously tall and just as skinny... so he pulled the look off well... but he's sooooo quiet, people always think he's up to something. He's such a great kid though - stubborn in his quiet way... but a really amazing person to be around. He's super shy though... I doubt he'll make it very far in college (he's going to Southeastern in FL) he has no study skills whatsoever. Every time he studies, someone has to be over his shoulder making sure he pays attention. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in college.

Back when he was diagnosed the only treatment was 'give a drug, but don't expect much'; that is, as far as I can see, going to be the biggest battle of my life. Joel is a smart kid, just nonverbal, and some treat that as unintelligent. For your brother, maybe there is a department at Southeastern that works with special needs that can get him a good tutor? There are some areas of thought that put ADD and ADHD on the higher end of the autism spectrum. There would be more help for him now if you can find the right places to look....we've come a long way, but still need to keep fighting! :animwink:

I wish you could see my friend's son in Roanoke. His diagnosis was similar - we know it's in the autism spectrum, but not specific or classic. He was just soooo in his own world! Thanks to some wonderful teachers and a tremendous amount of work from his mom, he is now about to graduate high school with skills that no one expected him to have. He's the most lovable boy!

That's so great! I hope and pray we have the right kind of educators here that will do the same for my boy!
There's a debate going on in the autism community (when isn't there? ), from those who believe that autism is a state that should be accepted, not changed or 'cured'. I think these voices are from the higher end of the spectrum. I accept that my son is autistic, but I also believe he can learn basic care, hygiene, and does not need to spend his day lining up his cars/trains and running back and forth, stimming. In that sense, those are things he needs to change, or find alternatives to those things. Am I making any sense?

You're making a lot of sense, and believe me you are not alone. James (my friend's son) used to be so lost in his little world, that you really could not enter it, and even now, he reverts back to that when he needs to. That's probably never going to change, but it can be worked with. You know he's bright, probably brighter than most at some things. You just need to somehow unlock that door he has in front of him. It's a very long hard raod ahead, but I know there's hope. I've seen it happen!

And on that encouraging note....thank you, hon  ....I must get in the shower, and then sort an entire week's worth of laundry. I will probably check in later, so have a great morning!
