Forgive me if this has been discussed in another thread....

However we will be in Disney at the end of May and my family really loves our local Japanese restaurant and was thinking and hoping that Disney would really give my family not only a good dinner show but excellent food. Anyone can provide comments on their experience there would be great so I can make a decision.
I know this will be quite pricey for 7 of us so I want to make sure its worth the money.

Thanks!!

We went there last May and are going again in April and love it. We did the dining plan so I couldn't even tell you how much it was. We had a 3 and 4 year old with us and they had a blast. Highly recommend if you don't think it is pricey.

It's excellent!!! But you are right, it is pricey. We ate there on the DDP and are planning on heading back in Dec. It is that good!

If you find the price to be a little above what you are willing to spend but are looking for a similar dinning experience in the World may I suggest trying the BeniHanas at the Hilton in DTD or there are two Kobe Steakhouses on I-4.

We love our neighborhood Japanese Hibatchi restaraunt so we thought we would try Tepen Edo. We thought the food was okay, nothing special, as we like our neighborhood one better. Also, the show was no where near what we have here. Like I said it was ok, but not among one of our favorites... :(

Same here. We have a local hibachi that I think is better, cheaper, and offers more food. Thats not to say Tepen Edo was bad though. Its just expensive and you pay for the simple fact that its in disney.

If you have a local one you like, then Teppan Edo is nothing special.

I also have a local one that I go to that is cheaper, better, and has a full sushi menu - as opposed to the 2 sushi offerings that Teppan Edo has.

It's not bad, but it could be a LOT better.

As far as 'entertainment' goes, it is like most Teppan places, it depends on the chef you get.

Now a question for people who have been to others. I have been to maybe 3 different Teppan places in my area. All of them do the onion volcano thing and they light it on fire - not steam, fire.

Teppan Edo does not do this. When my kids asked the chef "Are you going to light it on fire?" she said "No, Mickey won't let me"

Do they only light you food on fire in the area where I live, or is Teppan Edo being the odd one out?

They light them here too.

I agree with others. I enjoyed it, but didn't think it was anything special. Honestly, the ones here in Savannah are better to me.

Ours lights it on fire as well as a lot of other tricks. Our cooks did not do any tricks at Tepan Edo. We were very surprised at the lacking of tricks this restaraunt had to offer. but to each his own!

Here in our little town down south, we get the fire volcano (with pepper sparks/fireworks), steam choo-choo, and a big fire when they clean off the cooking surface at the tables nearby.

If you can believe it, we actually have two teppan places, one is a chain, the other is not. We prefer the locally owned one because the food is much better, but I think since they do all those 'tricks' that type of show must be pretty ubiquitous among teppan restaurants. Thirty years ago when I was a kid in Atlanta, we used to go to Benihana and they did all the tricks at that time, as well.

Disney is probably afraid someone's Aquanet/Ultra-Clutch will burst into flames and they'll get sued.

Anyway, we haven't tried Edo yet, but plan to go in March.

This doesn't reflect specifically on any particular post in this thread, it's just something that's built up within me over time.:fork:

It's always driven me nuts when people say "I'M NOT EATING AT THAT PLACE IN DISNEY WORLD, BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH BETTER MEXICAN, ITALIAN, JAPANESE, GERMAN, FRENCH, NORWEGIAN, CHINESE, SEAFOOD, STEAKS, ETC., ETC., ETC,. in my home town.:brick:

Yeah.....same with my hometown.
One frickin' problem though......................... your and my hometown dining gems AREN'T INSIDE DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad so many people are so proud of their local culinary options.
CONGRATULATIONS, seriously I mean it, CONGRATULATIONS!!
You are so lucky and smart to live there!
And when your town is picked up and moved within WDW, then I'll care.
Until then, go ahead and rip a restaurant in WDW if it sucks, but spare me the praise for your local dining dump, I DON'T CARE!

OK, I feel better, I'll let it go now.
Flame away!!!

No,

The point is, there are many places to eat at WDW. More than you can eat at in one trip

I had heard many many times how wonderful Teppan Edo is.

My kids and I made our dining choices, and after talking about it and reading how all fired great it was, we made an ADR

We ate there, and afterwards felt like we 'wasted' a meal. It was not that it was bad, but there were far better places at home. More than just one. It is really not that great a Teppan place. If you don't have one in your area, then it is a new experience and you should go. If you have one in your area, chances are it's better and I would recommend avoiding the place unless Teppan dining is one of your all time favorite things to eat.

If someone had made some posts such as the ones I have made, where I say "its not bad, but I have had better elsewhere in any number of places" then maybe I would have chose to eat elsewhere. As it is, I most likely would have eaten there anyway just to give it a shot. But for someone who is planing a once in a decade (or lifetime trip) to WDW, and who has a decent Teppan place in their hometown, I will continue to recommend skipping it.

Ehhh - you have a point, but the thing is... well, nothing much food wise at Disney is really outstanding anymore - separate the experience from at home, enjoy your vacation, but definitely don't expect anything sensational from Disney theme park dining... it's just not there, kwim?

I will agree with that as well.

The only place I really compare to local places is Teppan Edo.

I have never had a meal at a Teppan place (and I have had many) where the food knocked me over. Be it WDW, locally, or any number of other locales. Really, when you are limited to cooking on a griddle with pretty much nothing but a single ingredient and some sauce you are not going to have a stellar preparation.

Teppan dining is more about the show and the atmosphere. Thats why I compare it to local places. If you have a local place, chances are it outshines WDW. If you don't then Teppan Edo is something new for you.

Unless you live in a small town with nothing but chain restaurants (nothing wrong with that either) I am sure there are local places that far outstrip most of what is in WDW. But Teppan dining is still not as common as say Italian or French or German. So thats why I say if you have it local, skip WDW. IF WDW ever opens up a Korean BBQ, I will compare that to the many local ones in town, because I would bet that many dont have a touchstone to compare that sort of cooking to either.
