Mission: SPACE

I you can handle Test Track, Splash Mountain, and RnRC, you can probably handle Mission: SPACE.
When it first opened, it was MUCH more intense (4Gs) than it is now (1.5 Gs, I think).
Just be sure you always stare straight forward and don't close your eyes and you'll probably be fine.
I would also suggest not closing your eyes or looking to the side. I did this a few times and it will definately disorient you. I think you will be fine, especially if you enjoy thrill rides.:)

I like to do roller coasters, tea cups, etc. I usually think of myself as someone who can stomach thrill rides pretty well. So, I took my son on Mission:Space green. We did absoutely fine. So fine, in fact, that we all decided to try the orange. Son and husband went first, then me and son. I did fine on the launch. It was that flip around the moon that did me in. I don't think I've ever felt so sick on a ride before! I wanted to close my eyes so bad, but I knew the instructions said not to do that. I felt bad the rest of the night.

Maybe I'm just getting older, I don't know. Orange just wasn't for me.

i havent been on since they made two versions- but I'm another person who disliked it ! i felt very disoriented after riding it. And i LOVE all thrill rides , so i guess it depends on the person!

It's my favorite ride at Epcot, even better than Soarin'. I was a little nervous the first time, but now it's a must do. Tho this next trip I'll have my 9-year old nephew and I don't think he's ridden many rides of any kind, so we may try the less intense version first just to see how he does......

Definitely go for the orange version. And obey the instructions. Don't close your eyes and don't look out the door on the side.

If you follow along with the ride and keep your eye on the video and push all the right buttons at the right time, you'll be just fine (jk about the buttons)

It's a great ride. The launch sequence is fantastic. The rest of it is ok. We caught it during soft open the first time and the launch sequence was so intense that I (the commander of course), literally did make each of my crew speak to me during the launch just to make sure they could :)

Yes, many people do get sick on/after the ride. (there's a reason for the motion sickness bags in each capsule) But generally, if you handle most coasters, you should be fine. There are exceptions.

It helps if you're into space flight and interested in the topic, as opposed to just looking for some thrill ride experience.

Enjoy

I get terribly sick from spinning rides such as the teacups and Primeval Hurl, but I do okay on M:S. I ride the orange version. Once I felt a bit yucky afterward, but I think that was because I had just had some lamb at the Tangerine Cafe. :hurl: Just follow the directions at the beginning of the ride. Don't close your eyes, look to the side, etc...

Let me just say, I'm 16 years old now and it took me a very long time to ride most of WDW's thrill rides. In 2008 alone, I tried Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, Primeval Whirl, Rock n Roller Coaster, and Tower of Tower for the first time. I like all of these rides now, but it took me a very long time to try them.

That said, I rode Mission Space for the first time in 2004 when I was 11 (at that point in time, I had never ridden Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Test Track, or even BARNSTORMER). I loved it. The launch feels pretty intense, but it's really impressive (it seems so realistic!) and I don't mind it at all. If you can handle launch roller coasters, Mission Space won't bother you too much.

Heading for the great escape.
They definitely did tame it down since 2003. I had heard it elsewhere, and then I asked several MS cast members and all of them said that it has been toned down gradually since opening.

Ahh well thats it confirmed then, we all know that a CMs word is beyond contestation. Did they say when the monorail expansion was due to start?

I think the most important thing to know going into it is that it is a different sort of sensation from a coaster or even something like ToT. I love coasters and ToT is my favorite ride, but I really did not enjoy Mission:Space. The last time I went on it was before they changed it to the 2 versions, however. Now I just skip it so that the rest of my family can do the more intense version.

It felt like a lot of pressure on my head and neck, I didn't like that. I am someone who gets motion sick on occasion though not usually on WDW rides but on long car rides or boats. However, my discomfort was not due to nausea but something else. To me, it was very scary. I guess my advice would be to try the tamer version first and then try the more intense if you will have time to go more than once.

Yeah, and they told where Walt was frozen...

"I hope you learned your lesson, Timmy."
"Yes, Mommy, never talk to strangers... or cast members..."

If you can handle rides where you spin and stick to the wall go Orange (thats the basic ride system). You are riding a simulator at the same time.

If you can't spin and stick to the wall then go green it's just the simulator.

How bad is it?

Riding Mission Space feels a lot like riding these types of rides:

The physics are pretty much the same, thus, so are the sensations. Of course, in Space, you are sitting, in a extremely enclosed space, watching a video screen. The amusement park rides create an extra sensation of dizziness resulting from the visual element of motion, spinning background environment, etc., which are not issues in Space. In fact, if the video pre-show did not show you how the ride actually operates, you'd probably have no clue that you were spinning in circles.

See, the problem with that is, quite a few M:S CMs have the IQ of a pineapple.

Hey! Pineapples are awesome! Dole Whips are the made with pineapples (or artificial pineapple flavoring... but that's not point!).

If you really want to insult them, say they're as intelligent as the Judi Dench's SSE Narration writer.

Lol
