As posted just above the capsule picture, Disney has officially announced the opening date for MIssion:Space as:

-----------AUGUST 15th, 2003----------------

Here's hoping they get it open early for ya! I'll be down on August 23rd, so this is GREAT news for me.:)

I know the grand opening is August 15th, but there will be at least a month of soft openings preceeding this date, so it will clearly be open by August 1st. It's not going to open to guests for the first time on August 15th:) By the way, the third centrifuge is now complete, and work will end on the fourth within days. The only area not complete is the post-show area, currently populated by carpenters and such. I'll give em 2½ months before soft openings start--remember, Eisner demanded that guests be able to ride by July 4th, and it seems that will definitely be the case, now:)

I hope you're right, but according to another thread, it's soft openings that will be starting on August 15th. Someone posted a letter from Al Wiess to cast members. Granted, we don't know if the letter is real......

I, for one, don't believe the other post, simply because all of the press releases state the actual opening to be on the 15th of August.

I suspect this letter is a fake. Disney does not, and has never, announced soft openings. That is what makes them soft openings--they are unannounced. August 15th will be the first day SPACE is publicized as open, but guests will ride it beforehand.

I saw some interesting onboard video today from inside the ride capsule. 2 things were notable...

1. The riders had very big grins on their faces ;)
2. There are a heck of a lot of onboard audio effects, and it all seemed VERY realistic in there.

Is there any other cast members out there who have received that letter? That would let us know the validity of the letter.

The ride seems very cramped which I think is cool but what about handicap people? Where are they going to go?

My guess is this may be an attraction that you must be capable of moving from your wheelchair (if needed) to the ride vehicle. However, depending on "why" they are handicapped, it may not be an attraction they should ride.

Also, maybe they will have a separate ride capsule designed specifically for the handicapped. A lot of rehabs of rides/new rides have incorporated ride vehicles that allow easy-access for the handicapped. Although, again, I don't know if this ride will be one like that. Good question though.

I'm going to go against everyone else here - please DON'T post the video. I'm assuming you don't actually have it, and even if you did, you wouldn't be allowed to. Even if you are allowed, I want the ride to be a complete surprise the first time. I know I would watch the video and cut down on the surprise and if it was available. Please don't post it... :)

WESH TV here in Orlando had a couple brief clips on their afternoon news. The shots that were inside the vehicle didn't really reveal anything. It was a 4-way, black and white split screen. Three of the screens showed some riders' faces and the fourth just had the MS logo.

All you could see and hear were the reactions of the people to whatever was going on at the time. They were all smiling and having a good time, and I remember a female rider screaming "OH MY GOD" in a happy way.
