I agree with what most of you are saying on this one, and I know that the gift shop is not a big deal. As said above, it could be done in a week. I guess I just expected to see some progress since the last "through the window, looking at the amazing ladder" picture.

However, if we remain realistic about the situation, I still think we're looking at LATE this year. I'm going in either late August or early September, and I'm expecting it to still be closed.

For what it's worth, Eisner is demanding that this ride have its official opening by July 4th, which would make sense with the current hotel deals ending July 3rd--you know if they are planning on the parks being packed for its grand opening (I realize the 4th of July is the 2nd most busy day of the year, but I just find it odd that the "summer savings" deal would end two weeks into summer). I know Eisner has little power here, until he starts building it himself, but at least that seems to indicated that maybe he'd be willing to pay the workers extra to finish it faster, because at this point, each day is another pocket of change this attraction goes over budget...I still think this ride will be opening soon. They would not consider announcing another big ride before the current project is at least VERY close to completion which is why, again, I think they will release an official opening date on the 22nd. They cannot have a press release and say nothing about this current project. Again, this ride already WORKS; there is no reason why this ride can't be open for the summer guests. Eisner is already everyone's hero for releasing Everest, so you better believe he wants to pass on a date to us for Space amid threats to remove him.

Which, IMHO... would be mid-April to the end of May,

or

End of August to mid-November...

Don't know if that's good news or bad news...

Guess all we can do is hope it's the earlier and not the latter...it boggles the mind how long they have been building this ride...

I want this attraction to open just as much as the rest of you! Hopefully the enormous amount of time dedicated to making this attraction will make it one of (if not the) top attractions in the world!

Maybe, just maybe, this attraction alone could make the price of admission worth it (well, I imagine it will at least enhance the overall Epcot experience from being enjoyable to downright amazing!)

Mission: Space is a well thought out, well designed, and hopefully well functioning ride.

Animal Kingdom on the other hand was bought as an instant theme park mix in powedered form. Just add water :)

I too remember the initial opening date as being Spring 2003 - I was so happy as it would make sense to open for the increased Easter visitors which would coincide with my next trip.
At the rate they're going it will not be ready by Spring 2004

wouldnt it be awesome if M:S turns out to be the most out of this world [no pun intended] ride ever created! -i can see it now; every new travel channel show that was about the worlds best thrill parks would show epcot instead of IOA, and they would spend half an hour describing the incredible new M:S instead of spiderman!! :sohappy: :lookaroun :sohappy:

Me, Personally, I cannot wait to ride the Mission: Space: Ladder...!

Or maybe its part of the ride... See... They are building a ladder to the International Space Station... and part of your Mission is to climb all the way up to space to board your ship. You will experience the feeling of weightlessness and nausea from climbing that big bad ladder. ;)
How much do you think that ladder will go for in the gift shop? $129.95? Or will they only sell replicas of it for $59.95? Or a ladder snow globe for $49.95? Ladder key chains--only $5.95!!

Doesnt that pic look like the one someone posted earlier? So Disney hasnt done much work on the gift shop since the last update? Well I can understand that the gift shop isnt the most important thing about M:S so they are proubably working on the ride part and not the gift shop.

Hey--we might be on to a brand new marketing strategy for Disney. Ready to quit our day jobs?

The only reason they're probably working on the gift shop at all is to get the electrical work done. As with anything else electrical, you don't want to leave the main system half-finished.
