Miscellaneous Tokyo Thoughts

Found this on Twitter, an interesting run down of the history of expansion at TDR and potential for future expansion locations.
  • Red is already used expansion pads, starting at Critter Country in 1992 and going up to Fantasy Springs in 2024.
  • Blue is land currently under construction for expansion (Tomorrowland redevelopment).
  • Yellow is the remaining land that can be used for expansion (next to Lost River Delta, TDL parking lot, OLC offices)
The bottom three sections explore some other far fetched possibilities for off-site expansion:
  1. Kasai Rinkai Park: The largest public park in Tokyo, right across the bay from TDR. Could be large enough for a third park, but development is difficult due to conservation activities etc.
  2. Chidori district of Urayasu City: Urayasu previously abandoned plans to reclaim land here in-between TDR and Chidori. The image speculates that if land was filled in then this whole area could be used as expansion or for a third park. But seems like this would be tough as lots of businesses are located here and would need to be relocated.
  3. Yumeshima (Osaka): This is where the World Expo will take place next year. Tons of space here, enough to build a whole other resort, however City of Osaka apparently made a deal with Universal to keep other theme park operators out so if any expansion happens here it would likely be a second Universal park.

Great find. The yellow areas look like there are still spaces to expand for the moment

Didn't know about Osaka city's deal with universal if they can't build another theme park I wonder what the expo site will become?

Just curious, is it possible Tom Sawyer in Tokyo might be filled one day? MK is setting a bold example doing it, but it's something I've wondered. Some drastic changes happening with Tomorrowland so it's intriguing to me.

Possible? Of course
But OLC rejecting the proposal to fill it in for Cars Land gives me hope.

I don't think Rivers of America is 100% safe at TDL, but it looks like OLC should be able to get through the next decade using other expansion pads for now. Worst case, I hope they just shorten it rather than remove it completely.

This is really interesting! Gives some cool ideas for where a third park could go, if they choose to do one. I'm curious if Urayasu sports park would fall under "far-fetched" as well since it's even closer than Chidori.

Interesting that it was behind the Rivers of America that we saw weather balloons in 2023 here. Do you think that the OLC Offices will be the next expansion plot for TDL after Space is finished??

If they can open up that space, that's enough for two new lands. Could potentially do one for each park.

There's a trending article in Yahoo! News Japan about the decrease in young people going to TDR. A lot of it mirrors the discussions going on about declining attendance and price increases at the American parks.

The article notes that attendance among 18-39 year olds is down nearly 10% since pre-pandemic, and that attendance of guests 40+ years old is steadily increasing.

The article attributes the change in guest demographics mostly to higher ticket prices, but also the abolishment of the annual pass system and the decrease in entertainment offerings. It also notes that OLC is making record profit amid higher guest spending, even though attendance is lower than pre-pandemic.

From Joe Schott, President and GM at Shanghai Disney Resort:

Something magical happened during the recent typhoon in Shanghai – the high winds which battered Shanghai Disney Resort dislodged one of our recycling bins and it has magically come to life in Tomorrowland!

It’s my pleasure to introduce Xiaotui, or “Little Push”, a curious and conscientious recycle bin that loves to "eat" recyclables and "talk trash" with guests. Xiaotui is already making friends everywhere it goes, sharing tips on how to be a star guest and take full advantage of the park's waste sorting and recycling services.

Being a force for good in our community is among our top priorities, and Xiaotui is a great example of how we use creative storytelling to show how fun it can be to take care of the environments where we play and live. Keep an eye out for Xiaotui during your next visit!

Wrong thread, I think. But that is cute. I never saw the original "Push" at WDW.

Forbes article breaking down OLC's finances.

It mentions that OLC appears unlikely to meet their 2024 attendance forecast, despite the opening of Fantasy Springs, and that OLC's capitalization has decreased by $22.3 billion this year.

Their convoluted measures to control crowds and extract money from anticipated demand likely hurt them. Plus Fantasy Springs wasn't even open for half the year.

Universal should pay attention.
You know whats worst in Universal Japan.

Jaws, Spiderman , Jurassic park, Terminator are all closed at the same time, Plus lackluster lineup of entertainment, Attractions breaking down especially Flying dino and mario kart.

Special evemts doesnt really increase capacity and theres no regular big entertainment in the park.

and to top it off overcrowding is a regular occurrence after Covid ended and merch scalpers started appearing.
