Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

960x0.jpg

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

In 1977, the world of film was introduced to a little film called Star Wars. The brainchild of George Lucas, Star Wars revolutionized the way films were made. As the years went on, Star Wars was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Undoubtedly, Star Wars was big, and it was only inevitable that it gain theme park presence. The collaboration of George Lucas and the Imagineers in Disneyland was a mythic dream fit for the young and the young-at-heart. “When we started discussing the idea,” says Tony Baxter, “George immediately saw the potential. But he wanted to put a new twist on the story. Disneyland has always been known as a place where nothing could go wrong. In this show, something would go wrong.” The cause of the “intentional misadventure” of what would be called Star Tours was a friendly, well-meaning, but totally incompetent, droid pilot named Rex.

Star Tours, which opened at Disneyland in California on January 9, 1987, and at Disney-MGM Studios on December 15, 1989, was inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy, and was the first ever theme park attraction to use flight simulator technology. On board the StarSpeeder 3000, the rookie pilot Rex would take passengers on a harrowing flight into deep space, encountering icy comets and deadly TIE Fighters, all before destroying an inexplicable third Death Star.

When the Disney-MGM Studios opened on May 1, 1989, the park’s biggest highlight was the Backstage Studio Tour. Taking up the entire back half of the park, this was a half-day tour showcasing the latest and greatest in film production. However, as time wore on, and the land taking up the Tour area gradually shrunk as new theme park experiences moved in -- Muppet Studios, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Toy Story Mania, etc. -- it was clear that the tour was on its last legs. Also not helping matters was the petty competition a few miles away…

Imagine... it’s 2010. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has just opened at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. It’s a real game-changer, too; revolutionizing the way movies are represented in theme parks. Fully-immersive, right down to the smallest detail, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter truly put guests in Hogsmeade. Many people go on record saying that Universal was at last able to beat Disney at its own game. Now that the Boy Who Lived had made his mark in theme park history, it seemed almost impossible to find something to top it.

Rumors started swirling around in 2011, with sources varying on what Disney was going to do next. Then, on August 15, 2015, their rebuttal was officially announced. As part of the “New Era of Movie Magic” that was being advertised for Disney’s Hollywoodland at that year’s D23 Expo, it was announced that -- in addition to the already-announced Middle Earth, which began construction the year prior -- three more new lands were announced. Two would replace New York Street and the Backlot Tour: Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge; and the third was built on a parking lot behind the land that would become Galaxy’s Edge.

Thus, on April 4th, 2016, the Backlot Tour took its last ride, Residential Street and Catastrophe Canyon welcomed their final guests, Enchanted: Live on Stage played its final performance at the Backlot Theater, and guests played at the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure for the last time. The next day, work walls separated the area from Muppet Studios. The lights that used to be part of the famed Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights would later be donated to the Give Kids the World Village as part of their Night of a Million Lights. Well over three years after New York Street closed, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disney’s Hollywoodland on August 29, 2019, three months after Disneyland’s opened on May 31.

Galaxy’s Edge is set around the distant planet of Batuu, at some point in time in-between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. When we step foot onto Batuu, we are in its largest village: a settlement known as Black Spire Outpost. Black Spire Outpost is a thriving destination for those who would prefer to go about their business unnoticed - scoundrels, rogues, smugglers and, recently, whispers in the woods reporting sightings of individuals associated with the Resistance. Amid the omnipresent brew of conflict in the galaxy, sits an exotic outpost surrounded by a beautiful forest landscape dominated by the petrified remains of towering ancient trees, from which Black Spire Outpost draws its name. The modern village is built on the remains of crumbling structures built by a long-extinct civilization. Chat with the locals, and meet travelers from across the galaxy. Wander a street market filled with rare and unusual artifacts - and more than a few hidden treasures.

The main entrance to Galaxy’s Edge is from Muppet Studios. A grey-walled tunnel bridges the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the galaxy far, far away...

1581549694372-png.448537

Upon entering Batuu, you’ll find yourself in the wilderness on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost, an area teeming with life and substance. Unusual creatures and droid-tracks scar the mud-hardened traveler's road. Peculiar sounds and mating calls fill the towering trees and alien underbrush. Broken-down droids and forgotten parts litter the sides of the beaten path. And, perhaps most notably, the proud craft of Resistance fighters, including a life-size X-Wing, have docked for safety in this hidden oasis.

Chewbacca, Rey and other members of the Resistance have established a base camp in the Batuu forest. The First Order wouldn’t dare comb these untamed wilds... Rendezvous with other Resistance allies in a forested area near the ancient Jedi ruins. There, members of the Resistance have set up a secret makeshift post at Resistance Supply. We can stock up on essential gear and supplies so we are better prepared to take on Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

I’ve said this on the forums many times before, but I have refused to look up the plot of this ride or see any videos or photos of it, because I want the first time I see it to be when I ride it in person. All I know about this ride is this: You, being members of the Resistance, are being sent on a mission to help take down the First Order. But of course, in keeping with the proud tradition set by Star Tours, something goes horribly wrong and you’re caught in the crossfire of an epic battle between good and evil. The ride has been met with glowing reception, with many hailing it as one of Disney’s best rides to date, and some Star Wars fans going so far as to say it’s a better Episode 9 than Episode 9!

galaxys-edge-marketplace.jpg

Beyond this vast wilderness is Black Spire Outpost itself. Upon our arrival in Black Spire Outpost, we are immediately cast into an authentic re-creation of a Star Wars spaceport, complete with alien lifeforms wandering the streets, droids and spacecraft whirring past, signs and messages written in Aurebesh. There are a bevy of things to see and do here, so we will explore Black Spire Outpost in a circular manner, beginning with what lies in store as we enter past Rise of the Resistance. First, we come across the Black Spire Marketplace, an eclectic bazaar reminiscent of the real-world Middle East and South Asia. The open-air shops and eateries are all of a unique and exotic flavor. As we wander the market, we follow the intoxicating scent of grilled meat wafting through the air.

Ronto Roasters is a favorite stop for crews preparing for their next mission. Inside, spot the hanging podracer engine heating up a spit of meats. A pitmaster droid turns the mechanical spit, grilling a large side of ronto - a massive beast native to Tatooine. The colorful Kat Saka’s Kettle is an eclectic snack shop, where grains from all over the galaxy are on display. Order a generous, piping-hot helping of this popular and flavorful local specialty popcorn and enjoy it in our exploration of the marketplace.

Shopping for your next excursion through the Outer Rim? Need a new robe to greet the ambassador of your home planet, or just want to pick up some casual garb to blend in with the locals? Then Black Spire Outfitters is the shop for you. No galactic traveler should return home empty-handed. Here in this humble, jumbled shop called Toydarian Toymaker, we’ll find all manner of artisanal playthings and collectibles handmade by the grotesque toymaker, Zabaka the Toydarian. Her fantastical storefront is cluttered with crates of toymaking supplies and other works in progress - including a tauntaun rocking horse. Zabaka’s silhouette is often visible through the frosted back window of her workshop as she flits around crafting Wookiee dolls and classic games like chance cubes and sabacc.

At the exotic Creature Stall, you’re free to explore as you peek into cages and crates filled with hard-to-find fuzzballs from across the galaxy. Bina, the stall’s proprietor, scours star systems to keep this storefront stocked with unique companions for her customers. Marvel at a large collection of cackling Kowakian monkey-lizards, the rambunctious pets popular with shadowy underworld figures—including Hutts. Most of the creatures here are available for purchase (restrictions may apply to rathtars). Contrary to its name, The Jewels of Bith does not sell jewelry. It instead offers a wide variety of trinkets -- T-shirts, mugs, misters, mini Millennium Falcons -- to commemorate our visit to Batuu.

Hungry travelers can fuel up on galactic grub at the local Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. At this restaurant housed in a working hangar bay, choose from a variety of dishes prepared with exotic ingredients - all of it delicious, but none of it familiar. Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs has docked a food freighter loaded with fresh supplies and he's ready to satisfy the appetite of visitors and locals alike with an array of unique offerings. His planet-hopping travels allow him to prepare fare with unusual flavors that delight customers.

1581531651335-png.448482

At the farthest back point in Black Spire Outpost, you’ll find one of the most iconic images in the Star Wars mythos: the Millennium Falcon. And within the mountains surrounding the Falcon, Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka is looking for discreet flight crews to deliver a backlog of hard-to-find items to particular clientele - no experience necessary!

In an attempt to go “legitimate,” former pirate Hondo has established Ohnaka Transport Solutions on Batuu. Despite his best claims, Transport Solutions is, in reality, a front for smuggling. After the Battle of Crait, the Millennium Falcon landed on Batuu, where the Resistance established a base outside the Outpost. Ohnaka made a deal with Chewbacca to use the ship, and hired us, a temporary crew, to take part in one or more of Ohnaka's jobs, most often tasked with hijacking First Order supplies. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run is our chance to ride in the famous cockpit of the Millennium Falcon on a daring flight - and whether you’re pilot, engineer or gunner, every role is crucial!

ogas-cantina-star-wars-land-galaxys-edge-disney-2139.jpg

Welcome to the local cantina, specifically, Oga’s Cantina, where smugglers, bounty hunters, rogue traders and weary travelers of all ages come together to refuel, enjoy music and conduct business - no questions asked. With an expansive menu of exotic concoctions for young ones and adults, the cantina is a welcome rest stop before our upcoming galactic journey. We enjoy the bold musical entertainment courtesy of the eclectic DJ R3X. The cantina adheres to Oga Garra’s strict code of conduct, but patrons can be...unpredictable, so just keep your head down - and drink casual. Oga’s Cantina specializes in fantastical drinks sourced with ingredients from across the galaxy that will delight even the youngest crew members. To order selections with alcohol - like the Jedi Mind Trick cocktail, Bad Motivator IPA or Toniray wine - they will need to see your identification.

Dok-Ondar is the Ithorian you seek for selling and buying rare and uniquely-valued (and acquired) items, antiques and artifacts from across the galaxy and spanning all eras of history. Hidden inside Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, we’ll encounter a rotating collection of unique items that include everything from jewelry, to ancient tools, to rare kyber crystals, to statues - and even a collection of famous lightsabers. The eclectic assortment of goods comes from many different planets and eras. How Dok-Ondar acquired all of these treasures, no one knows. Some secrets are better off kept that way. Other secrets are better off kept for sale on the shelves of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. A constant presence in his den, Dok-Ondar resonates with something mysterious, enigmatic and almost mystical - and so do the objects he gathers. His shop is packed with crates, boxes and assorted carvings, and a close inspection reveals that each object has its own story to tell. Everything is carefully curated and arranged according to an unknown order. When one stumbles upon something, they might wonder - did they discover it by chance or were they meant to find it?

bryan_carlson_-_photo_rey_light_sabre-2.jpg

A group known as the “Gatherers” usher us into a convert workshop packed with unusual parts, whimsical pieces and miscellaneous memorabilia collected from the far reaches of the galaxy. Under their guidance, you can construct your very own lightsaber and bring it to life through the power of kyber crystals in Savi’s Workshop. Builders beware - you must protect the shop’s secrecy to avoid being discovered by the First Order! Once your lightsaber is complete (purchase required!), you’ll be ready to embark on incredible new adventures - from the far reaches of Wild Space to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!

Ah, but a lightsaber isn’t the only thing you can build at Galaxy’s Edge. The Droid Depot is a workshop stocked with parts, chips, manuals and other tech items useful for constructing one's very own droid, one of the galaxy's most indispensable sidekicks. First, register your choice of the BB-series unit or R-series unit with the clerk, who’ll provide a basket and blueprint for parts. Next, proceed to the assembly line and begin the droid-building experience at the Parts Station and Build Station.

A resourceful astromech droid, R2-D2 has shown great bravery in rescuing his masters and their friends from many perils. He formed an unlikely but enduring friendship with the fussy protocol droid C-3PO. Both C-3PO and R2-D2 can be found wandering near the Droid Depot in search of “Master Rey.” And if you’re wondering...she and Chewbacca can often be found roaming the streets of Batuu, trying to elude the First Order.

No visit to Batuu is complete without a frosty confection from the Milk Stand. The vendors at this quirky stall offer travelers an invigorating, refreshing drink that's a favorite among the locals. Luke Skywalker can be seen enjoying blue milk in the original Star Wars and green milk in The Last Jedi. Both these exotic delicacies are enjoyed here.

The First Order has arrived on Batuu in pursuit of the Resistance. Report for duty and make your way to Docking Bay 9 where the First Order has set up the temporary First Order Cargo post next to their shuttle, and all to win the hearts and minds of the locals. Kylo Ren and his elite Stormtroopers disembark from their shuttle and patrol the streets of the Outpost. Be ever so mindful as you step over to the Dark Side and encounter this imposing Supreme Leader of the First Order.

Well, we've gone through most of Disney's Hollywoodland now. There's still one more land, and it's the one that I decided to add in last minute, so I've saved it for last. What will it be? Well, that will be for you to find out later on.

And I should point out that the introduction to this land, as well as the vast land descriptions themselves, came mostly from @MANEATINGWREATH, so credit to him!

I admire you for that. I tried my best at first, but spoilers became increasingly hard to avoid, and I eventually caved in. The attraction sounds amazing, and I still cannot wait to ride it in person. Similar to Pirates, HM, and almost every other Disney attraction, pictures or a POV really don’t do it justice, I’m sure. But also I’m very jealous of your self-restraint. 😆 I think both of us are gonna be in for a treat, though!

What better way to end the month of February than by ending our tour of Disney's Hollywoodland? I've been hyping it up for quite some time now, and here it is -- the final land!

The Hinterlands

nightmare-christmas-disneyscreencaps.com-4.jpg

“‘Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems

In a place that, perhaps, you’ve seen in your dreams.
For the story that you are about to be told
Took place in the holiday worlds of old.
Now, you’ve probably wondered where holidays come from.

If you haven’t, I’d say it’s time you begun…”

Disney’s Hollywoodland was undergoing a complete and utter renaissance in the late 2010s. With three new lands announced to join the park, it seemed like there was nowhere else to go...or was there? Among the three new lands for the park announced at the 2015 D23 Expo was a land called “The Hinterlands”, a land inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. In its own way, this land would help highlight all the “worlds of Disney”: Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Touchstone, Jim Henson Productions, Lucasfilm, and now their various collaborations with Tim Burton.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has been a bona fide classic ever since its release in 1993. And much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it maintains a strong and ever-loyal fanbase. Thus, when the concept of expansion was floated, it was only inevitable that it finally get some serious park cred. By that point, the only major park presence the film had was the seasonal Haunted Mansion Winter Terrorland at Disneyland. But Disney Imagineers were determined to go onward and upward and truly bring Tim Burton and Henry Selick’s fantastical holiday worlds to life. And on Halloween of 2020, guests were invited to step into Halloween Town for the first time ever; and Christmas 2020 saw the door to Christmas Town open. (As @MANEATINGWREATH said about his Mirror Disneyland, the COVID-19 pandemic does not occur in this Mirror universe.)

Stretching beyond The Great Muppet Movie Ride is a forested path. Utilizing a unique indoor/outdoor rotunda (the “trees” surround the walls containing the areas, and there is no roof above the rotunda, allowing us to feel as if we’re still outside), we find ourselves in the titular Hinterlands, the mysterious forest where one can find trees leading to the various worlds of the holidays. Going from left to right from where we stand as we enter, we have: St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween, Independence Day and Valentine’s Day. It has been quite some time since Jack unsuccessfully tried to give Christmas a go, and since then, the realms of Christmas and Halloween have maintained strong diplomatic relations. These relations are also maintained with the other holiday worlds, and can be hinted at through various pieces of decor in both Halloween Town and Christmas Town. Of these seven trees, only two are open to us, with Christmas Town in the center and Halloween Town on the right. I say we start with Christmas Town, given that it’s the smaller of the two main areas of the Hinterlands.

nightmare-christmas-disneyscreencaps.com-1622.jpg

Christmas Town resembles that of a village from the pages of a Dr. Seuss book, a la Whoville or Solla Sollew, where straight lines and solid architecture are nonexistent. Each and every building finds itself covered in snow, Christmas lights, candles, garland, and festive décor, no ifs, ands, or buts around it. Passing beneath a candy cane-striped archway that appropriately reads “Christmas Town,” as seen by Jack Skellington on his fateful visit so long ago, we are immersed into the reels of an old Rankin-Bass holiday special, where cast members dressed as elves, cheerful snowmen, and ice sculptures of penguins and polar bears alike create a sense of full immersion into this holiday world.

Christmas Town and Halloween Town hold the distinction of being two of the only three areas in the park with background music composed specifically by Danny Elfman, famed composer behind The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and several other Tim Burton classics; the other area being Attack of the Atomic Alien at Echo Lake. All of the instrumentals consist of new “holiday standards” done in the typical Elfman-style that creates an omnipresent sense of mischief and mayhem, some being takes on classic Christmas carols, others being taken directly from films of his involvement, a la
“Ice Dance” from Edward Scissorhands.

In the center of town rests a cartoonish Christmas tree bewitched with the luscious smell of fresh pine, several stories in height and visible from nearly every point of town. Town Hall, directly behind the tree boasts a massive “Countdown to Christmas” clock that actually functions as an advent calendar. Every month on the 25th, a new window opens to reveal a new detail; for instance, on January 25th, a penguin pops out of a small window holding a fruitcake, then stays there until the windows all close again on December 26th.

Despite the fact that Sunset Boulevard already has its own carousel, another makes its home in Christmas Town, this carrousel being that of Santa’s Carrousel, a candy cane-striped carousel filled with creatures reminiscent of life in the Arctic regions of the world; polar bears, reindeer, penguins, seals, belugas, walruses, you name it, each and every creature portrayed in the art-style of a Mr. Tim Burton. An old-fashioned circus organ plays Christmas carols and Danny Elfman melodies whilst the “holiday creatures” spin about in rather rapid circles. To differentiate from the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, Santa’s Carrousel has a special mechanism in its core that allows the ride vehicles to spin at different speeds and angles, much like a toy “top.”

nightmare-christmas-disneyscreencaps.com-1913.jpg

Another family thrill ride is found in the form of the Christmas Town Express, a roller coaster ride through the land of holiday cheer. Jumping aboard the same train Jack rode during “What’s This?” at the Fruitcake Junction station, we embark on a family-friendly roller coaster ride through the mountains and tunnels of Christmas Town, deep into the Candy Cane Forest, around and about Mt. Marshmallow, past the Gingerbread House (as seen in Burton’s take on Hansel & Gretel), down the slippery slopes of Hot Cocoa Falls, and an icy finale in Blizzard Basin.

Heading back into town, we explore the Elves’ Workshop, the biggest and best toy store in the entire resort. Bizarre gadgets and gizmos throughout the workshop can be seen “producing” the toys being stocked on the shelves while animatronic elves are seen hard at work, often becoming involved in humorous situations and sight gags. Mrs. Claus’ Candy Kitchen billows the scent of melted sugar and vanilla, beckoning us towards its open windows and doors. Mrs. Claus herself has opened the doors of her world renowned candy kitchen, selling fresh holiday treats and baked goods year-round, meaning that Jack Skellington was truly dead-on when he stated that “the smell of cakes and pies are absolutely everywhere.”

The Polar Bear Bar acts not as a bar serving alcohol but as a bar serving sweets and exotic sodas, not to mention a holiday staple: eggnog. The eggnog here is so good that it gives an origin story as to why polar bears have white fur. According to local legend, as displayed through framed artwork hung around the bar, the owners, also known as the Polar Bear Bros. were a couple of grizzlies on a fishing expedition in the North Pole. When one brother unintentionally discovered eggnog, they both began to drink it...again...and again...and again...until they had drank so much eggnog that their once brown fur turned into an eggy shade of white, thus explaining why all polar bears today are white-furred.

As Christmas Town isn’t particularly large, the final attraction in the sub-area is none other than a trip to Santa’s House where the big cheese himself hosts a year-round meet-n-greet...and by big cheese, I mean Santa Claus, not Mickey. Although the Santa Claus we meet clearly doesn’t resemble the stop motion puppet used in the film, the interior of his meet ‘n’ greet is an almost exact replication of Santa’s house as seen in Nightmare, right down to the curved grandfather clock and framed portraits of penguins and polar bears. Mrs. Claus also makes meet ‘n’ greet appearances here, often bringing free treats from her candy kitchen as an added bonus... Photographs with Mr. or Mrs. Claus are available for purchase at Comfort & Joy, a year-round Christmas shop that doubly delves in the sale of photographs taken throughout the park.

nightmare-christmas-disneyscreencaps.com-91.jpg

Leaving the world of Christmas behind, we head back to the Hinterlands and enter Halloween Town. Architecture presented in the shape of monsters and creeps line the black-cobblestone streets of the distinctly German Expressionist-Halloween Town. Creepy instrumentals fill the air, creating an eternal sense of dread and intrigue. Simulated fog and mist sends a shiver up our spines, as the moon shines overhead. Rather than finding a Christmas tree in the center of town, we find a twisted well filled with glowing-green water, a choking monster of some kind “vomiting” more green water into the well. All of the sights familiar to us from the film are here; Dr. Finklestein’s lab, Jack’s house, Town Hall, they’re all here, some accessible, others not. Jack-o-lanterns rest everywhere, eerily glowing as night falls upon the land.

Several experiences have been set up by the town’s residents for the guests to enjoy. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King himself, is still in a Christmassy (or whatever his definition of Christmas is) mood, and is running sleigh rides behind his house. His sweetheart, Sally, is now running her own greasy spoon featuring her own culinary concoctions. Even her old colleague, the nefarious Dr. Finklestein, has set up shop, eager to draw in new victims visitors.

nightmare-christmas-disneyscreencaps.com-413.jpg

Town Hall hosts an exhibition of...well...I’m not sure how to best describe what’s inside...the Halloween Town Zoo is strangely held within Town Hall, a walk-through collection of perhaps some of the most bizarre and unnatural monsters ever created by mankind. Many of the evil toys seen in Nightmare are kept here in cages and aquariums, as are many of the failed reanimated creatures from the 2012 film Frankenweenie as well as other creations of Tim Burton’s mind (Oyster Boy! Is that you?). Witch’s Brew, a prank and “potion” shop sits next door, also selling Burton-esque magic wands and broomsticks. The eternally-glowing cauldron inside often allows a cameo appearance or two from Undersea Gal, Halloween Town’s own “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

Although the citizens of Halloween Town now know to leave Christmas to the professionals, they still can’t help getting involved in Christmas preparations of their own! The Scare-Bear Workshop is the place where the citizens get to work “making Christmas”, and we can join them! Guests are invited to join the monsters in making merry, scary merchandise! Much like a Build-a-Bear Workshop, the Scare-Bear Workshop provides several pre-fab toy parts which can be separately purchased and then assembled together. Create your very own bizarre toy monstrosity, and take home a part of Halloween Town which is truly your own.

enhanced-buzz-10818-1380815268-45.jpg

The major dining area here in Halloween Town -- and indeed, in all of the Hinterlands -- is Sally’s Potions, a greasy-spoon run by Halloween’s favorite rag doll. The restaurant structure, like Sally herself, is a patchwork of various materials sewn together - leather and burlap and Christmas wrapping - combined into a large bulbous façade like an oversized jack-o-lantern face. The interior too is like the inside of some gigantic pumpkin, however with surfaces of soil and stone instead of slimy pumpkin goo. Tables are set up around a central column, while handmade lanterns resembling gigantic pumpkin seeds dangle from the ceilings. A faint fog wafts. The scent of spiced pumpkin permeates the air.

What is the story behind this eatery? Well, just as Jack discovered the concept of Christmas, Sally has secretly explored the world of Thanksgiving Town. Her restaurant serves Thanksgiving Dinner every day, of course given that special Halloween Town twist so that every familiar dish appears in a twisted, delightfully spooky way. Mashed potatoes are formed (using molds) to resemble happy skulls. Pumpkin pie is topped with ghost-faced whipped cream. Cranberry sauce is applied like oozing blood. The décor follows suit, from the jack-o-lantern cornucopias to the centerpiece turkey which has been reduced to a mere animatronic skeleton. Of course, there are non-Thanksgiving-related meals Sally offers as well, including her signature soup. And don’t worry: Sally doesn’t slip Deadly Nightshade into the soup anymore. Now that she and Jack are a couple, and now that Dr. Finklestein has moved on to his “precious jewel”, she’s free to roam around anytime she wants! The beverage menu reflects Sally’s potion talents, as the drinks bear names like “Frog’s Breath”, “Worm’s Wart” and of course, “Deadly Nightshade.”

The Dark Lagoon Leeches Gift & Carrion Shop is a bit of an odd title for a shop selling all Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise imaginable. Where does the carrion come into play? Well, the carnivorous leeches that run the shop also like selling carrion...as in the skeletal remains of animals and Halloween Town citizens that unintentionally fell into the lagoon...don’t worry, they aren’t actually for sale...no good leech leaves a meal unfinished... The Halloween Hideaway, a year-round Halloween store that sells costumes, masks, miniature villages, ceramics, ornaments, and other decor typical of the October season sits within the manor home of the two-faced Mayor. The Mayor can be heard in his office, answering phones and getting into two-sided arguments with...himself?

MNSSHP-2017-28-600x800.jpg

Beyond the Town Square of Halloween Town are various other points of call. On the farthest-left side of Halloween Town, Jack’s House is open to visitors not just as a tour of his humble abode but also as a year-round meet ‘n’ greet for both Jack and Sally, Jack’s outfit going so far as to change depending on the time of the year, as in once November rolls around, he’s decked out in his “Sandy Claws” suit.

In the hills beyond Jack’s house, however, is Jack’s Midnight Ride. Remember what I said about the Halloween Town citizens still celebrating Christmas? Well, every year, Jack dons the Sandy Claws suit once more, hops into his coffin sleigh pulled by skeletal reindeer -- and Zero at the head -- to deliver gifts for all the good little boys and ghouls. And on Jack’s Midnight Ride, we’ll get to join him!

Nightmare-Before-Christmas-Coffin-Sleigh.jpg

This “slay” ride is similar to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train over at the Magic Kingdom, in that it’s a coaster with dark ride elements. Instead of mine carts, the vehicles are replicas of Jack’s sleigh, each fitting eight people (four rows of two) and fronted by a skeletal reindeer. Once aboard, the sleighs dip down a small drop and find themselves in the middle of a get-together for the Halloween Town citizens, preparing for the holiday season and singing “Making Christmas.” Everyone is creating toys - the Harlequin Demon is making delightful hats out of rats, the Vampires are painting a wooden duck full of bullet holes, the Clown With the Tear-Away Face is building jack-in-the-boxes, etc. With so many different sight gags and characters around you, you probably won't notice that you've ascended a curved chain lift hill.

At the top, Jack appears, dressed in his Sandy Claws outfit in his sleigh. He lets out a hearty “Ho, ho, ho!” and takes off into the air, prompting us to drop down before swooping back up over the rooftops of Halloween Town. This part of the attraction channels Peter Pan’s Flight, with the sleighs twisting and turning around corners, over buildings, and through open windows. Eventually, the sleighs slow down and pull into Town Square, where Jack emerges from the fountain, now back in his trademark pinstriped suit. “Scary Christmas, everyone!” he says as we arrive in the unload area and exit the attraction.

Also on the left side of Halloween Town is Dr. Finklestein’s Laboratory, perched atop a hill overlooking the town square and pumpkin patch. Visually, the labs are marked by a large, forced perspective spherical structure, the sort whose crooked angular shape would be unrealistic at full scale. Shoppers entering through an earthbound vault door will discover a laboratory straight out of Frankenstein, filtered through Tim Burton’s distinctive aesthetic. Every available surface is awash in bubbling beakers, whizzing gewgaws, and other bric-a-brac of a demented scientific mind. Dr. Finkelstein mostly allows Sally to operate this space, so the merchandise reflects her stitching skills. This is Halloween Town’s premiere clothing shop. Guests will find any and all Nightmare Before Christmas-themed apparel, more even than at an average Hot Topic, with cool new clothing always getting sewn together to celebrate the latest holiday!

ea3077e1202914d71f58ba9a86c4c9e8.png

On the right-hand side of Town Square, the northern path leads towards a Gothic graveyard and pumpkin patch surrounding the base of Spiral Hill, an icon in its own right. Exploring this mysterious graveyard, we are treated to many elements and features similar to what our real-life WDW Haunted Mansion has in its expanded queue, only revitalized in a Tim Burton style...which, to be fair, those elements already were in that style.

The southern path leads towards the outskirts of Halloween Town, the home of the only people in town that take malice in scaring, instead of gentle fun. I, of course, am referring to “that no-account Oogie Boogie” and his “little henchmen”: Lock, Shock and Barrel. This area is marked by the visage of the terrible trio’s treehouse. Those three, being trick-or-treaters, make candy collecting their life’s purpose. Their hideous treehouse is a cache of sweets and treats, available for purchase. Serving as Halloween Town’s dedicated candy shoppe, Lock, Shock & Barrel’s Trick-R-Treat Treehouse is a beacon of festive, playful, tantalizingly sweet confections. Aisles of candies adorn every crooked timber, from pre-packaged goodies to freshly-made specialties. Every item sold here is, unsurprisingly, themed-to-the-gills with Nightmare Before Christmas splendor. Cookies are decorated with characters’ faces, there are bags of marshmallow Jack Skellington heads, nightmarish jelly beans, black-and-orange candy canes...our chocolatiers never stop inventing!

nightmare-before-christmas-oogie-boogie.jpg

Now of course, a pipe in the treehouse leads to Oogie Boogie’s secret hideout. But since that would be impossible to replicate in a theme park, Oogie has found a new place to hang out. Oogie has found a building formed from twisting roots growing up out of the ground. Oogie has modified these roots extensively, dressing them up as a casino, adorning them with spirals of blinking neon lights, building a great big Oogie Boogie face near the entrance, even topping the gnarl of hedges with a bellowing smokestack reminiscent of a riverboat casino. Once inside the casino, we can dine at Oogie’s Cabaret! A creepy cabaret of frights hosted by that boogieing boogeyman Oogie Boogie! Come enjoy dinner and a show while surrounded by jazz-singing skeletons, enchanted slot machines, and more. This is a meal you can bet on!

Oogie’s Cabaret is an immersive, highly-themed eating & drinking establishment on par with Disney favorites such as Trader Sam’s Tiki Bar, but with a more twisted, er, twist. Imagine a world where the walls are coated in singing skulls, like some sort of musical ossuary. Where details and decor cover every square inch of the mausoleum interior, coating the space with original Nightmare Before Christmas models, repurposed Haunted Mansion Winter Terrorland props, and items inspired by Rolly Crump’s Museum of the Bizarre. Food and drinks follow the theme. There is Oogie Boogie’s signature Snake and Spider Stew, there are appetizers like potstickers which pretend to be bugs straight out of Oogie’s potato sack, and there are spooky glowing beverages (with or without alcohol) like those featured at Sally’s Potions.

But that’s not the only thing Oogie has set up here. Inside a frightening carnival tent is the location of Oogie Boogie’s Roulette of Fear, a Wipeout flat ride where guests bet their souls on the Boogie Man. Guests in the queue will hear instrumental jazzy tunes as well as the distant laughter of the titular Oogie Boogie. Moving forward through the queue, guests may also spot Lock, Shock, and Barrel peeping while holding up the circus tent. Eventually, guests will arrive at the main portion of the carnival tent, where they meet an animatronic Oogie.

“Well, well, well what do we have here? A bunch of poor souls who want to bet against me? Ha! You’re joking, you’re joking you really think you can win? Take a spin on my roulette wheel and see how you fare!”

Guests are then guided by a cast member who is dressed like one of Oogie’s skeleton prisoners to the giant neon blue roulette wheel. Once boarded into the wheel, neon lights begin to glow and the center of the wheel emits a bright orange light. An instrumental version of Ooogie Boogie’s song begins to play as guests are lifted in the air and twirled around. Guests with a keen eye may spot a tall tower with an animatronic Oogie at the top. Oogie uses a spinning lever to twirl the roulette wheel around and will laugh during the chaotic ride, amused by the guests’ reactions.

The ride is randomized, both with the speed and control of the wheel as well as the outcome on whether guests win or lose. If guests win, they will see the animatronic Oogie disappointed but inviting the guests to come again for another game. If the guests lose, the lights will go out and a couple animatronic soldiers will shoot off guns, after which, a round projection of the moon will light up on the ceiling with a smiling shadow of Oogie looming on it. Oogie will laugh and bats will appear before the lights return and guests unboard the attraction. No matter what outcome guests get, they will always get a ride worth returning to!

And with that, we have The Hinterlands! What do you all think?

My biggest inspirations for The Hinterlands come from two sources: @MANEATINGWREATH's Halloween and Christmas Town sub-areas from his 2016 Dream Resort thread; as well as the recent addition from The Sorcerer's Apprentice: Fantasmic Journeys, created by the following: @91JLovesDisney, @Brer Panther, @D Hulk, @MickeyJedi, @MickeyWaffleCo., @montydysquith-navarro, @Mr. Duck, @NigelChanning, @orlando678-, @SplashZander, @ThemeParkPriest and @TwilightZone.

The recap page for Disney's Hollywoodland will be coming around later tonight. I have also gone back to update the introductory post to include The Hinterlands, as well as make one slight change to the positioning of the lands within the two "areas."

Thus concludes our journey through Disney's Hollywoodland!

You know, since I've finished the third park of Mirror Walt Disney World today, on the last day of the month, I think it only fitting that tomorrow, the first day of March, should be the starting date for the next park of Mirror Walt Disney World. So, stay tuned tomorrow for the first post about Mirror Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Until then, as they say in Hollywood, "That's a wrap!"

Happy March! Let us now venture forth into Walt Disney World's fourth theme park...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Walt Disney Company has always had a committing association to wildlife, as Walt Disney himself pursued his interest in animals during the creation of his True-Life Adventures series, a nature documentation film, edited together to feature hours of nature's landscapes and wildlife. And beyond that, Disney films have starred countless animals and the modern Disney company takes pride in taking part in environmentalist and conversation causes the world over. Yes sir, this incredible planet we call Earth has given us many natural wonders, from its unique and varied biomes and landscapes, to the many familiar animal friends that roam its forests, swamps, oceans and tree-lines; and we’ll get a chance to see some of those incredible beings up close and in person as we begin our journey through Walt Disney World’s fourth gate.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which, fittingly enough, opened on Earth Day 1998, is dedicated to all of the animals of the world -- animals that are, animals that were and animals that never were. This park is a real-world experience, taking guests into a world of wonder and knowledge, observing and learning about the lives of the animal species that call Disney’s Animal Kingdom their home.

From The Oasis and Discovery Island, paths lead towards eight different areas. Many of the areas are themed around a different continent. In fact, almost all of the continents are represented here in this park, from the rolling plains of Africa, to the Himalayan mountains of Asia, to the verdant forests of North America, to the dazzling rainforests of South America and the majestic Outback of Australia. I say “almost all” because Europe will be represented through Beastly Kingdom, a land devoted to the animals of myth; and since the animals of Antarctica are already well-represented at SeaWorld Orlando just down the road from Walt Disney World, we’ll leave that continent alone here. And beyond that, there’s also the Conservation Station, an area devoted to efforts to maintain our environment and animal care, and Dinoland, U.S.A., themed around an archaeological dig site. With all that said, it’s clear that Disney’s Animal Kingdom is filled with adventure just waiting to be discovered.

Imagine for a moment: you are a traveler, whose trek to get here has been a long, tiresome journey. Think that the trek from the parking lot is akin to that of a trek across the desert. At last, the long journey has ended, and you have finally come to…

The Oasis

0901_fea_ocr-l-wdwanimal-01.jpg

The Oasis offers an escape from reality, operating as the entrance to Disney's Animal Kingdom. From first stepping into the entrance of the park, guests immediately find themselves taken away from the everyday world and transported into a beautiful oasis of palm trees and heavy jungles of trees on both sides of the entrance. The Oasis puts the guests in touch with nature and immediately sets the tone for the adventures to come. The Oasis is bountiful with unspoiled nature - to a time when some of the other complex natures found in the rest of the park did not yet exist at the time.

The mystical wonder of Disney’s Animal Kingdom sets in before you even enter through the gates. In the center of the park’s entrance area stands an Acacia tree from Africa, with a Sacred Lotus from Asia resting in a pond below. A rainbow eucalyptus from Australia grows next to the acacia with South American Orchids growing below. A Norway Spruce from Europe is the final tree, surrounded by Wintergreen found in North America. All six of these species represent the six continents featured in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. (This was an idea courtesy of @PerGron, so credit to him!)

On the outskirts of the park’s entrance, roaring waterfalls mark the entrance to the Rainforest Café. This popular restaurant chain is no stranger to Walt Disney World, having opened at Disney Springs two years prior to Animal Kingdom’s opening. When Disney announced plans for an animal-themed park, it was decided to make the famous restaurant part of the experience. Within the walls of the Rainforest Café, guests dine in a heavily-immersive rainforest environment, complete with raging apes and elephants, beautiful aquariums, rain falls and sudden thunderstorms.

Guests proceed to the gated entrance of the park, showcasing the signage for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. On both sides of the entrance, new waterfall features have been implemented into the entrance, to make the area look more lush and beautiful. Also alongside these waterfall features are ponds, and -- as @PerGron set things up for his Animal Kingdom equivalent -- each pond contains various forms of waterfowl. In the left-hand pond, you’ll find the Fulvous whistling-duck, the black-bellied whistling-duck, the marbled duck and the Argentine ruddy duck. In order to control breeding, all of the waterfowl in this exhibit are males, depicting the bright colors of male ducks, while not dealing with constant egg collecting. The right-hand pond is home to a unique species of stork known as the black stork that live alongside another group of waterfowl including a pair of long-tailed duck, a small group of northern pintail and a pair of Eurasian white-fronted geese.

The entrance of the park is also heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement, having nature itself being a heavy influence in the Oasis. Embedded in the courtyard of The Oasis is a matted graphic representation of the Tree of Life, something that might go unnoticed if you're not looking for it. After passing through the main gate, guests are then distributed into a promenade filled with lush jungles, trees and vines. The sound of a cascading waterfall could be heard just in the distance. Throughout the day, various Disney characters can be found, ready to welcome you to a day of adventure. To the left, guests will find Guest Relations and the right features the Stroller and Wheelchair Rental and Garden Gate Gifts, a merchandise location that offers disposable camera and video belongings, as well as Disney’s Animal Kingdom merchandise. There is a path that leads to both the left and right, re-connecting further into the Oasis.

the-oasis-exhibits-20004.jpg

On both the left and right paths, guests will find the Oasis Animal Exhibits. The winding pathways lead through dense vegetation and jungle alcoves. Canopies of tree branches and leaves blot out the sunlight from above. The pathways are filled with serene, peaceful settings and fascinating animals in very close proximity to the guests. The exhibits feature the outdoor animal living inhabitant areas for anteaters, babirusa, muntjacs, ducks, parrots, and other sorts of birds, iguanas and other types of animals. The exhibits offer just a peek into the many wonderful encounters just waiting to be held further on in the park. Each animal is carefully sheltered into an environment that is reminiscent of their actual living environment. Being able to replicate a living space for a wildlife animal in a theme park can be somewhat of a daunting task, yet Disney’s Animal Kingdom puts in the effort, flawlessly.

The rest of the animal exhibits are located in-between flowing rivers, serene pathways overlooking lagoons, covered jungle alcoves and rock formations, spouting cascading waterfalls. The entire area is reminiscent of a serene maze through a mystical jungle. There is even a rock cavern that guests can explore, with flowing waterfalls, leading to a rocky wooden bridge. When emerging from the rocky cavern, all of the separate pathways throughout the Oasis converge into one, leading across a wooden bridge, deeper into Disney’s Animal Kingdom…

Discovery Island

190e5e0910a026b5cbdc76d856ad9c95.jpg

Discovery Island is the central hub of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, consisting of the island in the center of a vast flowing river, which seems to flow its way throughout the entire park. Bridges connect Discovery Island to the other lands of the park. Discovery Island is filled with vast jungles, flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, encounters with real-animals and plenty of secrets left to be seen. Discovery Island is a place of excitement and adventure. The island honors the greatness of animals and nature, apparent in the buildings and overall thematic influences seen throughout Discovery Island. While Discovery Island is not meant to depict any sort of actual “place”, its architectural influences come from the equatorial islands from around the world, places like Bali, the Caribbean, the South Seas, Barbados and Jamaica. The artwork of the buildings features ornate animal carvings and sculptures.

The vibe of Discovery Island is one alive with music and fun. Throughout the island are various craftsmen and artists, all of whom use the animal kingdom and nature as inspiration for their work. To help welcome guests to this world of adventure, the Sensational Six -- Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto -- can be found roaming throughout Discovery Island, offering photos, autographs and hugs. The Viva Gaia Street Band can be heard throughout the day at their performance space across from Flame Tree Barbecue, lending a tropical flair to the island atmosphere.

Now, of course, every Disney theme park needs a parade, and Animal Kingdom finds its in the form of March of the ARTimals. The story behind this bizarre procession is that the various people on Discovery Island have decided to hold a special celebration in tribute to the animals of the Animal Kingdom. Accompanied by a live storyteller and band, the procession weaves around Discovery Island and features unique and artistic depictions of animals. Expect to see busy bees, crooning frogs, dancing elephants and proud lions, all on parade in this festive experience!

Continuing on from the entrance from The Oasis, guests walk along an ornate wooden bridge, crossing over the Discovery River. Here guests are then emptied into the main plaza entryway of Discovery Island. Vast jungles, trees, beautiful flowers and ruins of what may have been a once very active building are scattered throughout the perimeter of the area. Trees and plants are even planted backstage, to make the area of Discovery Island seem more expansive, more immersive, as if a whole world could possibly be explored in this jungle.

Just ahead, planted in the center of the island is the Tree of Life, the icon of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This centerpiece is one of the most exquisite and elaborate pieces of art that Disney has ever created. It is a piece of art that both captures the beautiful simplicity of nature and the kingdom of wildlife. The Tree of Life itself depicts the Animal Kingdom as it is, featuring 325 animals carved into the wooden tree trunk, even carved into the roots and branched which extend from the tree. It could and will take hours to spot every detail of the tree. The more one looks, the more it seems as though the tree is continuing to grow and branch off with new details! When continuing down through the main plaza into Discovery Island, directly ahead, guests will find the Tree of Life Garden, a small garden area, surrounded by tall trees and plants. The garden leads into a small enclosed section of Discovery Island, where guests can get a closer look at the front side of the Tree of Life. The garden also offers glimpses of some of the animal inhabitants, such as flamingos, lemurs and kangaroos.

A nearby path leads guests through dense, lush forests, proceeding directly inside the trunk of the mighty tree. From within the mighty tree, we are invited to take a seat and behold the world of animals and their habitats, and what we can do to make sure they last for a long time; behold the wonder of that magnificent planet we call ... Earth.

c7e7474505931cd7ffab75c63c31585d.jpg

A collaboration between Disneynature and the BBC, they who gave the world the amazing Planet Earth series, this all-new 3D experience, which replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug! on the park’s 20th anniversary -- April 22, 2018 -- takes guests through various animal habitats, from the North Pole to the deep sea to the forests and savannas, revealing how plants and animals respond to the power of the sun and the changing seasons. The film should make heavy use of the amazing visuals of Planet Earth, set to a sweeping score and a warm, inviting narration, courtesy of David Attenborough. It should serve as one of the highlights of a day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Come nightfall, the mighty tree comes to life with the beauty of Tree of Life: Awakenings. Utilizing astounding projection technology, the spirits of the Animal Kingdom imbibe the Tree with the natural wonders of our Earth. Stories involve hummingbirds, fox and deer, and utilize unique music and artistry to help weave the tale.

Heading back through Discovery Island, towards the entrance to Earth, guests will find the Discovery Island Trails, a trail which snakes its way throughout the base of the Tree of Life. The area is actually very well-hidden and is missed by many people completely, it almost seems as a bit of a “restricted” area, but that is a part of the adventure, right? As guests make their way through the ascending paths leading up the slopes of the island, the lush foliage falls away to reveal breath-taking vistas of the Tree of Life. Ornate animal carvings are featured in the branches entangling throughout the path. Guests proceed underneath a tunnel passage, revealing a waterfall, creating a mist effect throughout the cavern. Continuing down the trail, guests will also find other viewing areas for the animals from the Tree of Life Garden, such as kangaroos, birds and even a pool of swimming fish. The first trail disposes guests into the far-end of Discovery Island, just off of the entrance to Africa. The second trail leads through some pelican and flamingo environments, a cluster of parrots, some porcupine, a tortoise and other animals. The path brings guests right down towards Discovery Lake, leading right to the exit of Earth, at the very base of the Tree of Life, offering more breath-taking vistas of the scenery. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

wdw-kingdom-flight-00.jpg

Every day, watch as the skies above the Tree of Life burst with living color during Winged Encounters: The Kingdom Takes Flight, a show featuring macaws. Keep your peepers peeled for all six shades of macaw as they’re showcased in flight—from hyacinth, green-winged and military to blue and gold, blue-throated and scarlet. Each awe-inspiring specimen features a wingspan of up to 60 inches, which you can witness firsthand as they soar up and around the heart of the park.

To the left of the plaza, guests will find the Island Mercantile store, a shop themed to a shipping company, celebrating working animals, such as camels and elephants. This store features Disney character merchandise, Disney’s Animal Kingdom merchandise, clothing and other sorts of paraphernalia. It is one of the main shops of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, offering a wide selection of merchandise to choose from. Lilo and Stitch often meet guests nearby. Continuing northward, towards Africa, guests will find Pizzafari, a quick-service restaurant specializing in Italian foods and salads. Colorful animal murals decorate the restaurant. The restaurant also includes a small, closed off gazebo area at the back of the restaurant, also open to dine in, which almost appears to be sheltered completely in lush foliage, making it a quiet, relaxing place to take a break in. Located behind Pizzafari is Tiffins. This table-service restaurant celebrates the art of traveling, featuring a diverse menu drawing from places that inspired the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Open for both lunch and dinner, Tiffins includes waterfront views from comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas. And if you’re wondering about the name, “tiffin” is an Indian English word for a midday meal or a type of container used to carry food while traveling.

Back at the exit of the Discovery Island Trails, directly ahead, right before the entrance to Africa, guests will come across Creature Comforts, a Starbucks location for the park. On the other side of Discovery Island, across from Island Mercantile, the Disney Outfitters store is located, offering nature-themed gifts and an abundance of clothing. The store also features ornately designed totem poles of animals. Quite recently, the Disney Outfitters store has expanded into an all-new store: the Riverside Depot. The store carries a variety of character merchandise, and offerings from many of the stores found in the park. The Disney Outfitters and Riverside Depot combination is basically Animal Kingdom’s equivalent of the Magic Kingdom’s Emporium.

extinct-attractions-discovery-river-boats-1.png

Just beyond the store(s), a small rampway leading down to a dock along the Discovery Lake, guests will find the first stop for the Discovery Island Riverboats. These boats serve as the first of two major forms of transportation around this large park. The boats make three stops along their trek down the Discovery River: at Discovery Island, at Africa and at Asia.

Just across from the Riverboat Landing, guests will find the Flame Tree Barbecue, which serves up a selection of barbecued entrees, all wood-roasted to perfection. The seating location is also located right along the Discovery Lake, looking upon Expedition Everest. The seating area is a beautiful Balinese water garden and offers one of the most tranquil spots to enjoy a meal in the park. Guests can dine under ornately carved gazebos, overlooking the river. The entrance to Earth can be found right nearby, situated next door to the access point to the park-wide Wilderness Explorers game, inspired by the Pixar film Up. And along the path leading to Asia is Beastly Bazaar, a shop themed around water animals offering tropical wares, like surfwear and island-inspired merch.

The adventure has just begun here at Disney's Animal Kingdom! Now, I don't know when the next post will be coming along -- at some point next week, probably -- but when it does, we'll explore the land that never opened with the real-life park, but did in this Mirror park.

Hello, everyone! Just a quick update here.

First of all, I recently started reading @PerGron's amazing Disney's Wild Kingdom concept, and it's inspired me to go back and add a few elements from his park into Mirror Disney's Animal Kingdom. Since Disney's Wild Kingdom is shaping up to be a bigger and better version of the original Animal Kingdom park, I think that some of his ideas will help make Mirror Animal Kingdom stand out all the more.

Second, I've been doing a lot of thinking about a certain element of Mirror Walt Disney World, particularly this one...

@DisneyManOne Why you didn't do Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory mini land?
Well, after all that thinking, I have recently decided to go back and re-include Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory into my plans! Yes, it will not close after all! My new plan is to have it open not at Disney-MGM Studios, but at the Magic Kingdom, as part of Fantasyland. Remember S.W. Wilson's latest Magic Kingdom design, where he has the Casey Jr. Circus Train on the patch of land not too far away from the Fantasyland Railroad Station?

Blog%2B-%2BMK%2Bmultivers%2Bpart%2B2.png

Yeah, that's where I intend to put the factory. I intend to go back to all relevant posts and edit them with this new information, so expect to see Willy Wonka as part of Fantasyland very soon!

i need help with attractions (real/classic/unbuilt/fictional), dining, shopping, entertainment, meet & greets, parades, fireworks, stuff like that
I'm glad to help out with anything I can.

And now, let us continue our venture forth into Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Beastly Kingdom

beastlykingdom1.jpg

Myths and legends have prominently featured animals. But among that literary menagerie are the animals that never were seen with human eyes. Heading southwest of Discovery Island, a crystal-clear stream trickles beneath an arched footbridge, churned by a thundering waterfall pouring from a nearby rock formation in the shape of a fire-breathing dragon. We are in the forests of Beastly Kingdom, welcoming us to the world of mythological beasts and animals, a fairy tale come true for RPG nerds everywhere.

On the horizon, an ancient castle stands tall above the kingdom, perhaps inhabited by the darker creatures of mythology. On the adjacent horizon, a luscious mountaintop casts a welcoming shadow on the kingdom below, perhaps inhabited by the kinder creatures of mythology. Passing the bridge and going through a brief, tree-filled forest, we first find ourselves standing before a golden house. This estate is Mythic Manor. Inside this Renaissance-inspired home, we find a museum-like tribute to the various creatures of folklore. Real-life cryptozoology is also featured within the museum, exhibits showcasing the likes of the Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster and Yeti on prominent display. A smaller cottage right next door is Mother Goose’s Cottage, a small shop for the knight or maiden in all of us. Mother Goose’s focuses on fantasy-themed gifts not just of Disney-based origin, but also that of Grimm’s Fairy Tales and Mother Goose.

Going westward from Mythic Manor, we come across the “darker” side of Beastly Kingdom. In taking this path, heading down a dark forest road, guests are led along a path with charred suits of armor, abandoned weapons, and an eerie smoky atmosphere. This is Loch Ness Landing, the home of some of the more unsavory mythical beasts. Keep a good eye out, and you may see Nessie herself appear from under the water!

Upon entering Loch Ness Landing, we find ourselves before an old tavern. This is the Heroes’ Tavern, a place where knights of old used to rest. When they weren’t fighting dragons or saving damsels, you can bet they were right here, enjoying themselves. The bill of fare is traditional pub fare: meat, chicken, vegetables, tons of desserts, cheeses, and all that jazz. Plus, this is a good place to go for ale, mead and other forms of English beer. But just beyond this tavern, a trail separate from the others leads to an ancient castle perched high above the treetops, appearing to be battered and worn from an ancient battle centuries ago…

beastlycastle3.preview-590x482.jpg

A clearing in the forest brings us to the threshold of this ancient stronghold, immediately surrounding us with a Stonehenge-like arena seeming to have been built as a tribute to some great spirit. In the center of it all rests the skeletal remains of a mighty dragon, and not of the Maleficent variety. This giant fossil was at one time a true medieval dragon, the ones in which haunted the dreams and visions of the European countryside in the Dark Ages. Suddenly, a massive fireball spews from the twisted-facade of the castle, closely followed by a pair of reptilian eyes peering outward before disappearing into the shadows. From within, we hear screams of absolute delight and terror. We have stumbled upon the remains of the Dragon’s Tower.

Venturing deep inside the castle, we find that at one time a Royal Family of unknown origin resided over the surrounding land, ruling with a cheerful, loving hand. Scorch-marks and the skeletal remains of many a charred-knight imply that long ago, a dragon had indeed attacked the castle and all those within it, perhaps even taking over the estate. Our suspicions are confirmed when we come face-to-face with a band of giant vampire bats whom have been gifted with the ability of speech. These bats are a band of thieves known as the Dracula Six, and according to local legend, the dragon that now resides within this castle has a sea of treasure underneath his belly that he's not willing to share anytime soon...unless it’s stolen...

Boarding a bat-winged roller coaster train suspended from the ceiling, we embark deep within the castle to rob the sleeping dragon of his priceless gems, only to unintentionally awaken the beast and undergo a thrilling, chilling roller coaster ride through the remains of this charred castle past restless spirits, booby traps, and of course, the dragon overlord himself. As the Dragon’s Tower has an in-ride photo opportunity, it seems only fitting that a gift shop is located just near the exit, Dragon’s Tower Portrait Studio, a medieval-themed photo supplier and Dragon’s Tower-themed gift shop nestled in the former dungeon of the once-grand castle…

On the eastern path leading from Mythic Manor, we find ourselves in a land of rolling green hills, trickling streams, and endless, patchwork fields of multi-colored flowers and temperate trees bathed in the colors of autumn. The remainder of Beastly Kingdom represents that of Ancient Greece and Medieval Europe, land of heroes and monsters, gods and goddesses, adventure and magic, a natural fit in the realm of mythical beasts. This section of Beastly Kingdom features five attractions.

(57:37 -- 1:00:48)

First is Fantasia Gardens, a boat ride themed around the animal-based elements of Fantasia. Along the same lines as Storybook Land Canal Boats, this is a gentle boat ride past dioramas, both outdoor and indoor. Expect to see the sights and sounds of Ancient Greece, as represented in “The Pastoral Symphony”; the yo-yo-ing flamingo and his disapproving brood of “The Carnival of the Animals”; Noah’s ark, as seen in “Pomp and Circumstance”; and, of course, the dancing animals of “Dance of the Hours”.

IMG_7872.jpg

Second is the King’s Garden Trail, the animal trail for Beastly Kingdom, highlighting the unique animals found in Europe, animals rarely seen in zoos. Here, amid the dense woodlands, amid the beautiful flora, we can gaze upon creatures such as the capercaillie, the red deer, the fallow deer, the wisent (aka the European bison), the European mouflon, the mute swan and the Italian wolf. Blending in beautifully with the King’s Garden Trail is the Pal-Around Woods, Beastly Kingdom’s meet ‘n’ greet area. Here within these woods, guests can meet up with classic European animal friends: specifically, Robin Hood and his Merry Men (Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and Prince John), as well as our friends from the Hundred Acre Wood -- Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit and Owl. In addition to these friends, Merida, she who once had a bear for a mother, can be found within the woods, as well. Surrounding the Pal-Around Woods are three special exhibits of the King’s Garden Trail, each one containing an animal inspired by the three stories: the red fox (Robin Hood), the brown bear (Brave) and the coney rabbit and western barn owl (Winnie the Pooh).

On the outskirts of the King’s Garden Trail is an old, abandoned castle stronghold. Unlike the Dragon’s Tower, this one appears to be more well-kempt. Stepping within, we are invited to take a look at Merlin’s Menagerie. In this theater-in-the-round production, basically a cross between a Circle-Vision show and a live production, we join Merlin and Archimedes as they use their magic to bring the animals of myth to life via special effects, animatronics and screen-based wizardry. Not too far away from Merlin’s is the Beastly Spin, a Dumbo-esque spinner ride, built within Merlin’s garden. However, unlike those flying pachyderms, here we get to fly on the backs of mythical winged creatures, like griffins, gargoyles, phoenixes and pegasi.

Fifth, and perhaps the most intricate and detailed of the attractions in Beastly Kingdom, is Quest for the Unicorn, an interactive maze where guests wander through a labyrinth in search of the mythical and elusive unicorn. Guests need to awaken five golden icons in order to enter into the underground grotto where the unicorn lives. It’s all very visually engaging and detailed. Quest for the Unicorn is located right in the middle of Beastly Kingdom. From there, the path connects back to the Dragon’s Tower, but I don’t really wanna go there again. So, let’s just head on back to the mainland, why don’t we?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Thus concludeth our sojourn through Beastly Kingdom. I've always wondered what it would be like to see this land come to life in the park, so it was so much fun to set up this Mirror universe where Beastly Kingdom got to be part of the Animal Kingdom experience, after all. In fact, in this Mirror universe, it opens on Opening Day with the rest of the park!

My Beastly Kingdom was inspired by three concepts. First was @MANEATINGWREATH's Beastly Kingdom sub-area, that was part of Fantasyland in his 2016 Dream Resort thread.

Second was S.W. Wilson's Ideal Buildout, the layout of which played heavily into my ideas here. In my mind, Beastly Kingdom has this same layout, complete with Merlin's Menagerie and Beastly Spin, albeit with the King's Garden Trail/Pal-Around Woods standing where the Swan Queen ride is.

Third and finally was @PerGron and his Europe concept. All credit for the King's Garden Trail/Pal-Around Woods concept comes from his wonderful Wild Kingdom park concept! Also, I hope you don't mind me giving your European Wilds a different name. I wanted it to blend in with the Beastly Kingdom aesthetic.

In about two days' time, I think I'll have the next leg of our journey uploaded here. Prepare to explore the vast savannas of Africa! See you then!

Walking through the deep jungles of Discovery Island, we continue north until we arrive at a wooden bridge, embedded with stone features. The sounds of distant drumming could be heard just over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is Africa. The Africa that Disney’s Animal Kingdom depicts does not focus on one sort of area, but many different areas that could be found in Africa. DAK’s Africa is centered around the village of Harambe, which depicts a real place facing real environmental challenges. Harambe is a Swahili word, meaning “working together”. When guests enter Harambe, they have become a part of the story. When the guests walk the streets of this village, they are greeted by the residents, as though they are tourists exploring the city.

After crossing over the bridge, guests find themselves in the village just on the outskirts of a dense jungle and the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. The buildings are somewhat worn, showing both their age of construction and the natural, simple way that the buildings were constructed. The buildings are inspired from a form of Swahili architecture, a common form of architecture found throughout many parts of Africa. As the Imagineers researched authentic African design for the park, they learned that many of the architectural qualities of Africa that they had researched were impractical work spaces and not conducive for theme park operations. It is all a part of the storytelling aspect of Africa, even just using legitimate building architecture that works for a functioning theme park, but is also a legitimate African architectural style. In the pavement of Harambe, guests will find stone linings, depicting the remnants of old city walls. The only remainder of these walls are the footprints that still lie cemented into the ground. Plastered along the somewhat dilapidated buildings are worn advertisements and tourist attraction signs that help better introduce the sense of story into Africa. On the right side of Africa, there is a path, leading along the back end of the park, traveling along Discovery Lake, leading towards the next land in the park. The pathway features a cluster of drums, as their rhythms sound throughout the entire land.

Just to the right as you enter is Tamu Tamu Refreshments, a quick-service location, offering drinks and a few dessert options. The location also features an outdoor seating area, which has seemingly fallen into disrepair, sheltered by worn rooftops and crumbled walls. Across the way is Tusker House, a sit-down restaurant located alongside Discovery Lake. The exterior of the building is made up of stone and brick accents, inspired by the architectural styles of Kenya. It is a top-notch dining experience featuring a greatly inspired African menu. The restaurant also features carved wooden features on the interior and an outdoor seating area under a thatched roof. The outdoor seating area is also a common location for a local live drum and performance troupe to perform. Nearby the restaurant is Dawa Bar, offering African beers.

Off to the right of the Tusker House, guests will find the Harambe Theatre, the home of Festival of the Lion King. As I am sure one can guess, since Camp Minnie-Mickey doesn’t open here in this Mirror universe, that means the Harambe Theatre opens not in 2014, but on Opening Day 1998. This wildly-popular show, often hailed as one of, if not the, best shows in all Walt Disney World, features the animals and creatures of the kingdom in a celebration of song and dance. Led by a troupe of four singers -- Kiume, Nakawa, Kibibi and Zawadi -- the show boasts one of the most talented casts in any Walt Disney World show, as both live performers and puppetry are integrated in the show. Naturally, the show features all of the film’s classic songs, each one set to a unique performance style. There is an opening stylized around “Circle of Life”, which is later reprised as a dance featuring the whole cast, a grand procession set to “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”, a tumbling act by Timon and his Tumble Monkeys set to “Hakuna Matata”, a fire-dancer performing to “Be Prepared” and an aerial ballet set to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” The show also features audience participation in multiple facets -- each section gets to make a unique animal sound, and the children are invited to help with the finale. One thing is for sure: Festival of the Lion King is a roaring good time!

One can even meet Rafiki and Timon outside the theater, and across the way from the theater is the second dock for the Discovery Island Riverboats. But, if you’re still on an entertainment high after witnessing Festival of the Lion king, never fear. More entertainment can be found in the village square of Harambe. There are many performers here, including the Burudika Band, the Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe, and the Harambe Village Acrobats. There is even a man playing the Kora Tinga Tinga, a famous West African instrument.

Continuing into the heart of Harambe, on the right, adjacent to Tamu Tamu Refreshments, guests will find Mombasa Marketplace and Ziwani Traders, an African marketplace and trading company, featuring many safaris merchandise, clothes, African wood carvings, a selection of fine wines, pottery, masks and musical instruments. Opposite of the store, guests will find the Kusafiri Coffee and Bake Shoppe, a perfect location to grab a pastry and a cup of coffee in the morning, in this quiet, tucked away corner of Harambe. Located to the right of the bakery, continuing to the back of the village, guests will find Duka La Filimu, a location for guests to film equipment.

Harambe-Market.jpg

Right behind Mombasa Marketplace and Ziwani Traders is the Harambe Market area. The area is set up as an outdoor marketplace with five different walk up windows to order some delectable African-inspired food and drinks. First, you have Wanjohi Refreshments, the window for all your drinking needs. Here you can find specialty drinks in a souvenir mug, wine and beer. Kitamu Grill offers ground beef flatbread and grilled chicken skewers. Both entrees come with a tomato, broccoli and red onion salad in a spicy vinaigrette. Boerewors Famous Sausages features the interesting curry corn dog. The corn dog also comes with the broccoli, tomato and red onion salad. Chef Mwanga’s Ribs serves up a huge chunk of spice-rubbed ribs with a chickpea salad. Finally, we have Zuri’s Sweets Shop, which features 80 new items, including decorative candy apples, uniquely flavored chocolate bars, African-spiced popcorn, animal-shaped lollipops, animal crackers, chocolate mini crocodiles and other treats. Zuri’s Sweets Shop also offer African spice rubs, a gourmet cocoa set and Flame Tree Barbecue sauce.

Next, we continue to the back end of Harambe Village, where guests come across Kilimanjaro Safaris, the staple attraction of Africa and one of the most popular in the entire park. It is one of the central elements to Africa, both story-wise and theme park-wise. In the attraction, the Harambe Wildlife Reserve welcomes the tourists of Africa to explore their preservation zones, where animals live their lives as they ordinarily would. The intent of Kilimanjaro Safaris is for guests to enter into a natural environment with animals living in their own world, not on display. The entire attraction is about 110 acres, about the same size of the Magic Kingdom. The Kilimanjaro Safaris takes guests through vast jungles, where life animals roam and anything can happen. The jungle vehicles travel through lagoons inhabited by hippos, crocodile bayous, an African savanna, where giraffes, gazelles, ostriches and other types of non-carnivorous animals call their home, a lion’s den, an elephant plain and a watering hole located by a set of zebras. However, not all is well on the savanna… poachers have invaded the preservation zone, and they’ve got their eyes on Big Red, a mother elephant, and her calf, Little Red! Can you stop the poachers before blood is shed?

Mt%2BKilimanjaro.png

In 2018, as part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s 20th anniversary, Kilimanjaro Safaris got an update. Since the ride was already one of Disney’s most cinematic rides to date, why not lean in and go full IMAX with it? In an idea thought up by S.W. Wilson, the flood control canal is re-shaped into a naturalistic “Masai River.” And beyond that, in the distance, are seen larger herds of elephants in what is currently the acclimatization paddock. Having large numbers of animals in the fore-, middle- and distant- ground makes for an awe-inspiring visual experience, that one typically would only see in the real savanna. Likewise, when the vehicles turn southward after this view of herds on the far riverbank, an even greater visual appears, a giant, snow-capped volcano -- Mt. Kilimanjaro itself -- and forms the distant backdrop to the rhino paddock and lion kopjes. This mighty mountain is a multi-purpose façade. On the African side, it’s designed like Mt. Kilimanjaro, but the other side is themed to blend in with North American wilderness, and the Wildlife Express passes right through it on its way to the next station.

At the exit of the attraction, towards the path leading south back down towards Harambe Village, guests will find the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail right at the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris. The attraction is a walking trail, taking guests through a research training facility, where researchers and scientists are taught conservation techniques. It is a learning experience for the guests, learning more about the animals, the world and the way that they can make a difference. The trail features a gorilla exhibit, located throughout a series of cliffs. The exhibit can be seen from many different vantage points throughout the trail.

wildlife-express-train-gallery05.jpg

Back outside, leading back up the trail towards Harambe Village, on the left, guests will find the Harambe Railway Station, one of three dropping-off points for the Wildlife Express. Originally offering strict one-way service to the Conservation Station, this changed in 2017. As part of the D23 Expo that year, it was announced that areas based on North America and South America would take up space on that large, unused parcel of land behind Asia. As such, the Wildlife Express became something of a round-trip operation, becoming the second major form of transportation around the park after the Discovery Island Riverboats.

hkdl-att-tarzans-treehouse-hero-00.jpg

Nearby the station is a dense jungle forest, filled with bamboo thickets and dangling vines. Cascading waterfalls flow into pools of water nearby. The trail then empties out into an area themed around one of Disney’s most underrated classics: Tarzan. Entering the area, the first thing guests see is the camp settlement; the one seen from the film and more-so, inspired by the “Trashin’ the Camp” scene. The entire campground is filled with tons of interactive elements like instrumental clotheslines, spouting teapots, spinning globes, books, pots and pans, old record players, maps, projection slides and the like. And of course, we are invited to make some sweet rhythms and music with all this junk, just like Terk, Tantor and their gorilla buddies!

Right nearby is Tarzan’s Treehouse, a replica of the treehouse Tarzan was found in as a baby. Much like the attraction at Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland, this is a walk-through attraction where we can explore the tree up-close. However, unlike those two, this treehouse is far more interactive. There are screens that have guests try to catch fruit that is being dropped by monkeys, an easel that lets you draw with Jane, and read-aloud sections of the story narrated by Jane’s father, Professor Porter. There is even a vine-swinging experience that takes off from the highest level of the treehouse, and invites one and all to feel like the King of the Jungle! While this attraction is still, for all intents and purposes, a queue, it is now, at least, an interactive queue. Tarzan, Jane and Terk even have a meet ‘n’ greet location set up near the base of the treehouse.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

And there we have Africa! I must point out that the idea to make Tarzan's Treehouse more interactive comes from @PerGron, so credit goes out to him!

I think I'll get the next post out on Monday, either then or by the end of next week, I'm not sure. But whenever I post it, that is when we will explore Asia!

The term would actually be "Railway" since the only place were a rail network would be called a "railroad" would be in the Americas (the exception would be found with a few, early 19th century railroads in Britain), but that would depend on regions as some networks and companies on both continents would refer to themselves as a "railway".

Really? I did not know that. I'll go back and edit things accordingly.
