Question:

Why is "antidisestablishmentarianism" even a word? Wouldn't the "anti" and the "dis" just cancel each other out, thereby making it only necessary to write "establishmentarianism"?

(This question popped into my head mid-hike today, making it impossible to focus on the quiet serenity of the desert landscape)

:p

Welcome to the world inside my head!!

Well no, because the people who were 'anti' were different from the 'dis' people. Thus they were against the people who were against the establishmanetarianism.

Maybe it could be 'proestablishmentarianism'?

You can tell I've also given this some thought.

Damn good word though.

I'm glad it's not just me thinking about this!! And, I think you're right... proestablishmentarianism would seem the easier thing. However, that would then take away antidisestablishmentarianism's claim to fame as the longest word in the english language. Such a perplexing situation.

At the risk of boring myself before I am able to complete my response, I would say that being against disestablishmentrianism doesn't necessarily mean you are proestablishmentrianism.

For example, you could be against anarchy, but also not a big fan of fascism. Or you could be . . . :snore:

Yes i see your point.

Perhaps antidisestablishmentariansim really is the correct word.

Thus preserving its place!
