Merchandise Shortage

It should be interesting moving forward. After exiting ride attractions, WDW tries to extract more money from us when we have to exit the building through the gift shop.

A big reason…

but also the prevalence of internet sales, second hand markets, etc.

why carry it around when some nut from Altamonte springs has 22 for sale on eBay?
Well...anyone except ShopDisney is going to have an upcharge applied, for one. (I realize some don't care about that, though.)

Some people are patient enough to wait until merch makes it's way to the Outlets.

The primary reason is that they sell it all on shopDisney in volume and it’s not unique like it was pre-Internet, pre-Beijing political, pre-pressler

but while some Disneyana stuff goes for high mark up on eBay almost immediate…much of the park stuff is run of the mill and can be had close to sale price

I used to buy lots of little trinkets to give away in my group...haven't done it in almost three years though, at this point. The choices are just awful.

Especially when the merch is the same in every exit shop.
Once I was in the RockNRoller gift shop at DHS about 15 years ago looking at T-shirts and the crowd mostly females were just hanging out inside the shop and created quite the traffic jam. Then a few minutes later I knew why. Steven Tyler and his young lady friend with a Disney escort exited the ride and were browsing through the gift shop smiling and waving at the crowd throughout the time he was there.

I grew up in the same town where he owns a home and spends a lot of time. It's not uncommon to bump into him out and about in town. This is him in a local grocery store buying gift cards to donate to a local charity...

EDIT: OOPS!!! This is him DROPPING OFF the gift cards, lol. He's not in a Star Market - they don't leave boxes of canned soup around like that. If memory serves, the police station was collecting things to donate to a specific charity that serves locals, so this could be where they were storing everything.

I think we are likely to see some store closures across WDW.

I wonder if they'll ever reopen. If they do end up closing some, I would not be shocked if Disney looks around and thinks, "You know what, look at the money we saved by not stocking that store, paying for staff, etc. -- let's just keep it closed."

They've certainly shown that the overall guest experience is not a priority at this point, so I don't think they'd really care if it leads to overcrowding in other stores (which already exists anyways). They'd have to see a decrease in sales due to closed locations for it to really move the needle.

Seems to be the case at Studios. Grand Avenue and Animation Courtyard have none of their retail locations open. Indiana Jones store and kiosk still closed, Beverly on sunset closed recently. I can’t believe one park has so many merch venues closed. It’s also a dangerous game to play as even if the line of business sees better profit, its diminishing the overall guest experience and capacity.

Da hell was a noted contrarian like you doing there?
Ahem! The preferred vernacular is "realist," kind sir! 🤪

Anniversary trip - a couple nights at Boulder Ridge then 5 nights with a Savannah View at AKL. Very little time actually spent in parks this trip, and more pool time than usual for us. The Verry Merriest DAH event was the longest we stayed in a park. During the day, the parks have been crazy packed. Don't worry, though - I successfully avoided buying G+. 😀 1 paid Rat ride is all they got from us because we really really wanted to ride it.

Back on topic, even holiday merchandise seems to be in somewhat short supply. It's in the parks and World of Disney but there was very little available at Boulder Ridge and nothing available at AKL at all except a lone AKL Mickey ornament (literally 1 ornament left on the rack).

It's a huge hit to capacity (which directly affects the experience, as you mentioned) but they've seemed very willing to diminish the overall park experience to save money/increase profit over the past few years, and it seems to be ramping up even more with Chapek as CEO.

Who would ever fathom, " I've got money to spend but not many places to spend it ".
