What I said was, and you just backed me up in your last post, that Heath Ledger helped drive DK's success. The film would have done just as good, maybe a little better than Batman Begins. But DK did more than triple the business worldwide, more than 3 times the business when comparing opening weekend numbers. And no one can tell me Heath's unfortunate death, America's morbid curiosity with death and dead actors, and the hype surrounding Heath's performance of the Joker didn't help increase those numbers.

'help' and 'triple' are entirely different concepts and to suggest that 'help' equated to almost 700 MILLION dollars is a bit absurd I think.

And conveniently mixing in 'death' and his performance together is just a way to CYA by just lumping everything together so any attack on one can be countered by the success of the other. His performance is independent of his death AFTER the film was made.

Heath was a huge part of the Dark Knight. But he wasn't the only thing that made it a great film.. and his death had even less to do with it's success. The next film is still primed for big success without Heath, or any deaths.

Agreed. This will be the highest earning of the three if it is a decent movie and I expect it will be.

People also need to keep in mind that the death so close to the release of the movie likely kept many people away. Not saying it was a wash but his tragic death had next to nothing to do with the movie's success. I think that is quite obvious to most reasonable people by now.

I'll never quite understand the competition between fans of The Avengers and fans of The Dark Knight Rises. As if it's any profit to you whether your film comes out on top or not. Just enjoy 'em both.

I finally got around to seeing The Avengers last night. The 3D eye candy was superb to say the least...quite a thrill ride. The villain was lacking (imo). He seemed like a wussy smartass at best, with no real backbone or charisma that effective villains possess. The story blueprint overall seemed predictable and lacking in depth: Heroes assemble but don't get along at first. Then they get along and stop aliens from taking over the planet. Lot's of boom, whap, boosh!! The End.
BUT, despite it all we did have a really good time and certainly found the movie to be worth it. Would I sit through it again? Probably not. But I still give kudos to The Avengers for some outstanding 3D effects and thrilling action sequences. I LOVED many of Tony Stark's/Iron Man's one-liners throughout the film (especially his "Shakespeare in the park" comment about Thor's outfit).
Overall I give The Avengers a B-. It didn't live-up to the obsessive hype and box-office numbers I've been hearing about, but still an enjoyable one-time ride. I certainly did not feel ripped-off as a movie patron.
