Sorry have to ask… is this the same person who was saying Frozen 2 was going to bomb, then dug in and said it was bombing?

I remember laughing then, but if it’s the same person… this is just sad.

No that was WDW Pro. Whom I think runs a rumour website.

They claimed to be a huge industry insider... Until we established they did not know the difference between domestic, international and total grosses. I only take joy in the folly when people are obnoxious and rude about it - then proven wrong.

Right!! This has seemed very similar, so I forgot who that was.

Obviously he is. The movie is a huge hit and broke records this weekend. He is just sad he guessed wrong again and everyone is calling him out on it.

"As we told you yesterday, Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings is easily headed to $90M+ over four-days. This comes after an awesome Sunday hold, -2% from Saturday, with $22.7M bringing the pic’s 3-day to $75.5M, and 4-day to a massive record breaking of $90M for the Labor Day stretch per Disney. Industry estimates see it between $91M-$92M. Today is expected to come in around $16.2M per industry estimates, while Disney is figuring $14.5M. Either way you slice it, it’s a hit."

It did very well so far…

but to be fair…we have zero sense of what the new normal is with “legs”…so I’m curious to track this.

remember: a lot of the world is not vax and their governments didn’t end restrictions/refuse to reinstate them and let delta run wild for months

This is the cinema near us, for the 6:30 showing.

So honestly, the amount it’s making in North America is impressive, given the capacity restraints.

Wrong:

Opening weekend (Thurs-Sun) -

Thor - $65M
Captain America: The First Avenger - $65M
Ant-Man - $57M
The Incredible Hulk - $55M

All 4 were origin movies and all 4 had lower openings than Shang-Chi's $75M (Thurs-Sun). And all 4 didn't open during a pandemic when seating is still limited.
We agree to disagree

I agree that we do not know what the normal is but according to the real experts (Variety, EW, etc) this movie is a hit.

WDW Pro is another insider who is a joke. He posts insider tips that have been posted on other websites and steals them as his own. He never misses the chance to pat himself on the back for anything he gets right.

Solid opening weekend, quite impressive given the circumstances. The holds in upcoming weeks will be interesting to watch as it has great reviews/viewer ratings and good holds during the weekend. That tends to portend it will do well the next two weeks/weekends

did they announce when it will show up on D+ and will it be premium at first or straight to “free”?

AFAIK, 45 days, straight to free.

Even if we were to compare Shang-Chi to pre-pandemic Box Office, it's still very impressive and not flopping and not doing horribly.

Of the thousands of movies released pre-pandemic, compared to them, Shang-Chi ranks from number one to the top 200....

I know that this is the thought, but I don’t think Disney has officially said, right? The agreement with theaters is that Disney can release in other formats at 45 days; I’m wondering if they just do digital downloads/VOD and DVD sales at that time and hold off on Disney+ for a bit after. That would be a strategy that lets them triple dip on the value of the film with multiple windows which would be similar to the pre pandemic setup.

Disney announced a 45 day exclusive theatrical window, but I don’t think they’ve said anything about when streaming might/will occur.

All the industry trades are somewhat sure that it will hit D+ after 45 days (Oct 17).

Everything I've read is it will be on Disney+ at no extra charge at the 45-day mark.

They have referred to it as an "experiment", which indicates Disney is still playing around with what approach is the most profitable.

Black Widow will probably make more money because of the Disney+ Premier Access, which earned them at least $125 million.

On the other hand, making something like Shang-Chi available for "free" can lead to new subscribers and helps keep existing subscribers on board. It builds the Disney+ brand.

The success of both movies does seem to show that people will still go to the theater for Marvel movies, even if an at-home option is available the same day or within a couple of months.
