Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*

So GOTG should have made more money?
No, it should have made exactly as much money as it did (I'm not sure I even understand your question). And at the time it was made, the amount of box office money a particular film made had much less influence on whether Marvel would allow a sequel into production. Eternals 2, Shang-Chi 2, Captain Marvel 3 ...

I’m happy the film is doing well but how did it open better than GotG?

Thunderbolts: 76m
GotG: 94m

That’s before adjusting for inflation.

What am I missing ?

by most involved Shang Chi 2 is still happening

Yup, Thunderbolts* only made 7% more in its opening weekend than Guardians of the Galaxy, and no one ever heard of that film again… and that’s not even considering how much better movie theatres are doing now when compared to 2014.

That’s how I read this statement.

Making 7% more would be doing better?

I misspoke. Thunderbolts is in fact doing better overall. The specific 7% is in international markets excluding China, which had clamped down on US productions even before the recent developments.

The question is whether it will have Guardians legs. It deserves to. I just saw it and it’s a top 10 MCU film for sure, very debatably top 5. Only the third time an MCU film made my eyes a bit watery. It’s very, very good, and I really hope Doomsday and Secret War don’t prevent us from getting a direct sequel.

FYI, I don't know if its been reported in the WW totals yet. But China is the #1 international market for Thunderbolts with opening over $10M, that is slower overall by comparison (as you mentioned they are clamping down on US releases) but its better than in recent years where no releases were happening for MCU in China.

I wasn’t trying to call you out. I just know you like to present the facts as accurately as possible and something seemed a little off to me.

Thanks for clarifying.

So I guess we are no longer talking about the Thunderbolts.

We have a new name.

Its marketing, hence the * in the title. Its a cheeky nod to Falcon and the Winter Soldier when at the end it was renamed Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

If you saw the end credit scene you'd know why its a nod.

At one time, making a few hundred million in profit was considered utterly fantastic.

How disillusioned we've become by comparing everything to a billion or two billion dollar movies.
Unless there’s some hidden ground swell of support…it won’t come close to making “a few hundred million” in profit. Not even in the ballpark

They should have called it the D+ Avengers rather than the New Avengers, it’s a team up of all the D+ hero’s but unless you watched the D+ shows you likely have no idea who any of them are.

I don’t understand the rebranding, as the Thunderbolts I thought it was doing pretty well, as an Avengers movie it’s looking like a massive flop. The expectations are vastly different with that name.
