Guardians : 161.7MGlobal box office.
Thunderbolts : 162.1 M
Before inflation adjustment.
Maybe you have different numbers.

Doesn’t matter.
Film is not a blockbuster for a Marvel film, but at least it won’t lose money.
Guardians : 161.7MGlobal box office.
So GOTG should have made more money?GOTG was made at a time when Marvel was invested in longterm thinking and planning. It no longer is.
No, it should have made exactly as much money as it did (I'm not sure I even understand your question). And at the time it was made, the amount of box office money a particular film made had much less influence on whether Marvel would allow a sequel into production. Eternals 2, Shang-Chi 2, Captain Marvel 3 ...So GOTG should have made more money?
This is not even true, MCU still has long term planning it just has had to adjust those plans due to a couple different factors. I know it doesn't seem like it, but they have had a plan and still have an end goal for this current Saga.GOTG was made at a time when Marvel was invested in longterm thinking and planning. It no longer is.
Who said Thunderbolts was doing better the GotGI’m happy the film is doing well but how did it open better than GotG?
Thunderbolts: 76m
GotG: 94m
That’s before adjusting for inflation.
What am I missing ?
by most involved Shang Chi 2 is still happeningNo, it should have made exactly as much money as it did (I'm not sure I even understand your question). I misspoke. Thunderbolts is in fact doing better overall. The specific 7% is in international markets excluding China, which had clamped down on US productions even before the recent developments.Casper Gutman said:

Yup, Thunderbolts* only made 7% more in its opening weekend than Guardians of the Galaxy, and no one ever heard of that film again… and that’s not even considering how much better movie theatres are doing now when compared to 2014.
That’s how I read this statement.
Making 7% more would be doing better?
FYI, I don't know if its been reported in the WW totals yet. But China is the #1 international market for Thunderbolts with opening over $10M, that is slower overall by comparison (as you mentioned they are clamping down on US releases) but its better than in recent years where no releases were happening for MCU in China.I misspoke. The question is whether it will have Guardians legs. It deserves to. I just saw it and it’s a top 10 MCU film for sure, very debatably top 5. Only the third time an MCU film made my eyes a bit watery. It’s very, very good, and I really hope Doomsday and Secret War don’t prevent us from getting a direct sequel.
It will have decent legs thanks to positive reviews and word of mouthI sincerely think Thunderbolts* has what it takes to at least break even. I think it will make money.
Time will tell.
I wasn’t trying to call you out. I just know you like to present the facts as accurately as possible and something seemed a little off to me.I misspoke. Thunderbolts is in fact doing better overall. So I guess we are no longer talking about the Thunderbolts.
We have a new name.
Its marketing, hence the * in the title. Its a cheeky nod to Falcon and the Winter Soldier when at the end it was renamed Captain America and the Winter Soldier.![]()

Unless there’s some hidden ground swell of support…it won’t come close to making “a few hundred million” in profit. Not even in the ballparkAt one time, making a few hundred million in profit was considered utterly fantastic.
How disillusioned we've become by comparing everything to a billion or two billion dollar movies.
1 outta 2 ain’t bad, meatloafTold ya
…desperation move…it seems? They should have called it the D+ Avengers rather than the New Avengers, it’s a team up of all the D+ hero’s but unless you watched the D+ shows you likely have no idea who any of them are.
I don’t understand the rebranding, as the Thunderbolts I thought it was doing pretty well, as an Avengers movie it’s looking like a massive flop. The expectations are vastly different with that name.
