I noticed a lot of the roofing in the FLE is aluminum or something similar so they can put on the shingles or other theming whenever they want. I suspect they are taking this more expensive option due to the Florida rain and humidity. When they removed the liner from the Tea Cups you could see all the rot. So while plywood probably works perfectly in a place like Southern California it appears they are trying different materials at times in Florida.

That is steel roof deck that is the silvery material. It is pretty standard stuff, but you are right that it is definitely the correct type of construction for the use and climate.

You are also correct that the climates in the two locals require very different materials. Wood in general is a bad idea in Florida, an should never be used in commercial construction.

This has caused me to speculate that many of the MK rehabs are utilizing newer materials so as to mitigate the problems of rot, mildew, insect damage etc. This may be why we have seen so many schrims and so many rehab projects throughout the MK. It is quite possible these state of the art materials and techniques are much more expensive and time consuming than the old methods. But it may mean the infrastructure will be much less expensive to maintain in the long term and Disney will then be able to more readily focus on the details visible by guests including Kevin Yee.

~just my opinion~

Even with all the advances in research there still isn't the maintence free material. Everything still requires something.

There is no question the cost of construction has skyrocketed compared to 1971, but the materials they are using aren't anything out of the ordinary of what is done on a nice commercial building.

I don't think anyone without a chip on their shoulder can look at any of the recent additions and say there has been a lack of detail. There is some great looking stuff. The only issue I have is with some of the choices of what to build, not how it is executed.

This is why is floors me that they've waited this long to start work on SWMT. We are heading into the very rainy season for Florida and in the summer it'll rain nearly every afternoon. Not good for work, regardless of whether you're pouring concrete or not.

I thought I heard somewhere that It wasn't started right away because at first the rollercoaster design was having some minor flaws??? I'm not sure though but to me 2 years is STILL a long time considering what they already have done to it.

Agreed and thanks for the information.

@disneyprojects on twitter has photos posted of steel track supports installed today for the Mine train and it is much taller than the concrete wall!

Hmmm, no wonder Imagineers were seen skulking around here and there.

All the steel is computer designed ahead of time, the structural steel, the track, and the rebar skin that all the cement rock work is built on, once the foundation is set the pieces are just in assembled in place. The only thing that could slow it down is the weather, that's the only unknown variable, if it rains like crazy they can't pour concrete ect... so imo the "2 years" is more like a worst case scenario type of number

and it doesn't matter how good you are at advertising you can't put ads on T.V. that say" come see the New Fantasyland... but just ignore the big unfinished mountain in the middle of everything"
It really can take that long. I also would be surprised to see a big advertising campaign. The New Fantasyland project is about adding capacity to deal with existing crowds, not increase attendance.

but to the people paying money to come see it, IT'S ALL ONE THING
So?

I do not equate ornamentation with detail.

I hate to be the one to burst everyones bubble but the steel you see in all of the pictures is scaffolding. It has nothing to do with the mine train!

Not in those photos no, but we were talking about somewhere else! It's easy to get jumbled up, not a problem!

This picture is going to be the support for the track. This is the top of the second lift hill, which will be inside. The lift hill will move from right to left in the picture, peaking at the tallest support, with a small drop then exiting back out of the mountain to the left.

The big gray wall behind it will be the wall that the 3 little mermaid buildings on the backside of the SDMT mountain will back up to. It can be seen in the model.

This is hands down the most exciting picture of this expansion I have seen yet. I might even have to go get us some new aerials that's how exciting it is to me.

Nor do I. Festoonery is more like what you are speaking of methinks.

The train station is beautifully detailed. Classic. This is what I was referring to. It isn't welded stamped steel, it is well put together and designed.

Peanut shells in the concrete is festoonery in my opinion.

If that track is going to be in the mountain then it looks like the edge of the mountain is going to be really close to the path, they should make it into a climing wall.

I won't have time this week. I was going to go today, but my car broke down and I had to put it in the shop. But next week it looks like I'll be able to make it up. I can't wait to see these steel track supports from the air.

It's not as close as it looks in that pic. See below for better perspective:

It's just that it's a relatively tall structure so it appears to be right over the wall. I would guess it's maybe 40-50 feet tall?
