I noticed a lot of the roofing in the FLE is aluminum or something similar so they can put on the shingles or other theming whenever they want. I suspect they are taking this more expensive option due to the Florida rain and humidity. When they removed the liner from the Tea Cups you could see all the rot. So while plywood probably works perfectly in a place like Southern California it appears they are trying different materials at times in Florida.
That is steel roof deck that is the silvery material. It is pretty standard stuff, but you are right that it is definitely the correct type of construction for the use and climate.
You are also correct that the climates in the two locals require very different materials. Wood in general is a bad idea in Florida, an should never be used in commercial construction.
This has caused me to speculate that many of the MK rehabs are utilizing newer materials so as to mitigate the problems of rot, mildew, insect damage etc. This may be why we have seen so many schrims and so many rehab projects throughout the MK. It is quite possible these state of the art materials and techniques are much more expensive and time consuming than the old methods. But it may mean the infrastructure will be much less expensive to maintain in the long term and Disney will then be able to more readily focus on the details visible by guests including Kevin Yee.
~just my opinion~
Even with all the advances in research there still isn't the maintence free material. Everything still requires something.
There is no question the cost of construction has skyrocketed compared to 1971, but the materials they are using aren't anything out of the ordinary of what is done on a nice commercial building.
I don't think anyone without a chip on their shoulder can look at any of the recent additions and say there has been a lack of detail. There is some great looking stuff. The only issue I have is with some of the choices of what to build, not how it is executed.
