I think they're both right, technically. If referring to more than one KIND of fish, it would be fishes. But if referring to more than one of the same kind of fish or just a general large amount of fish, it would be fish. It's like "fish" correlates to "less" and "fishes" correlates to "fewer" grammatically.

That's one way to look at it.
But you may just be complicating things.
