Trip Report Making Lemonade out of Lemons Fractal Family Trip Report - Completed

I think we can all agree that so far 2020 has been one big sour lemon.

For those that did not read my Pre-Trip report; my entire family (Val-wife, Alex - oldest daughter, Sterg - son, Toni - youngest daughter) has recovered from the Covid-19 virus. Myself, Val, Sterg and Toni got it in March and Alex in April while working as a nurse. Val had it worse with a fever for a couple days and flu like symptoms for about a week. The rest of us were either asymptomatic or had minor symptoms.

Add to that the mental stress of living in a society dealing with this pandemic, Toni missing out on a big chunk of her High School Senior Year and her last dance recital (where she was going to take on a major role as Jasmine), work reductions for Sterg and high stress work conditions for Alex on the front line. Yes, 2020 has sure been one big sourpuss.

But, as the saying goes; "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"

It just so happened that last year I made a reservation to attend the annual AHEPA convention in Walt Disney World, just as I did in 2017. We were going to stay at the Grand Destino Towers but that seemed very much in jeopardy when AHEPA (which is a charitable organization I'm involved with. Like a Greek version of the Knights of Columbus or Lions Club.) cancelled their convention. Soon after however, I received an email that Disney would honor our reservation in July. This was pretty tempting since we had convention rates and discounts on tickets. Long story short, we decided to go. We felt that having already had the virus gave us an extra level of protection and we knew that Disney would handle the health risks properly. In addition, we later found out that our rooms were moved from Grand Destino to the Contemporary in order to accommodate the LA Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks. Sterg's and my dream of playing Marco Polo with the Greek Freak and LeBron James in the pool were quickly dashed. But who could say no to staying at The Contemporary for $175 a night?

We were a go! It was frustrating however because although we had a resort reservation we did not have park tickets. We also didn't have a "park pass" which was needed during this reopening of WDW. We had to wait for all that to open and I had serious doubts it would by the time our first day at the resort (July 20th) rolled around. I decided to book flights without tickets or park passes. Southwest had roundtrip flights from Philly to Orlando for $90 plus if you had to cancel you got that credit for a future flight. No brainer. This was turning out to be the cheapest Disney trip we have taken as a family! Soon after I was open to buy tickets and book Park Passes. We had started to squeeze that lemon and add it's juice to our pitcher of cold water.

Now for the Cast of our adventure.

Myself - Chris/Fractal. A lover of Disney Parks for the many memories it has given me over the years with my family, the way it helps me completely unwind from my job, and how it taps into my creative side and challenges my skills as a photographer.

Here I am with my crazy kids at Christmas.

MVIMG_20191224_220836-XL.jpg

Val - my beautiful wife. Not the biggest fan of Disney but in the end she was on board. I think secretly she likes it more than she lets on. I will make it up to her with a trip more to her liking.

Here she is with Alex.

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180816202048133_COVER-XL.jpg

Alex - our oldest. Now a traveling nurse. Alex is like me in many ways but as she's getting older and more responsible I'm starting to see her take on a number of Val's traits. She's a good mix and always a delight to be with.

From a trip to Colorado we took last year;

DSC00630-XL.jpg

Sterg, aka Fractal Jr. One word to describe Sterg - catalyst - he just makes things happen. He creates reactions both good and bad. He graduated last year from Penn State. He was a captain on the Swim Team but not without drama. He had to miss his promising senior year of swimming when a series of concussions (all outside the water) forced him to medically retire. PSU handled it very well as he helped the team from the sidelines. He now works as a digital marketing consultant as well as helping his cousin get his music career off the ground. Never a dull moment when Sterg is around!

with our dog Prince (Charming).

20200706-DSC06336-X2.jpg

Toni - For long time readers of my reports you know that Toni and I have a special Disney connection. Many times she would be the only one up early with me to tackle the parks at opening. We have had many great adventures together in the Disney bubble. She's now technically an adult (how did that happen?) so I was going to find out this trip if the magic was still there. She's going to attend Clemson University starting next month and I couldn't be prouder.

Toni in front of the Theater her Recital was supposed to perform at.

20200616-DSC05993-X3.jpg

So Covid-19 made our family suffer in many ways, but we took that lemon, squeezed it's juice out into our water pitcher, now we just needed a little Disney sugar to make our Lemonade complete.

Coming up - Our trip begins with a WDW meet-up before our flight even leaves the ground!

We stopped to take some pics in front of these cool looking blue doors.

It turned into a mini photo shoot.

Discovering that the bar that served me my magical beer on my last trip was closed almost sent me into a deep depression.

Who makes these decisions? Don't they read my trip reports?

What once actually served a function was now just a prop.

OK, enough negative vibe. Time to focus on the mission at hand. Finding and confronting the Yeti!

As I was snapping photos of the amazing Everest queue, Sterg asked me how many photos have I taken of it over the years.

"Enough that if it burned to the ground, Disney could use my photos to recreate it down to every detail."

At the time that may have not been 100% accurate, but by the end of this trip it just may have.

"Hi taking a picture of a stool." Toni added.

20200722-DSC08979-X3.jpg

20200722-DSC08980-X3.jpg

The queue line moved at almost a perfect pace; slow enough that allowed me to take photos and to overall become immersed yet quick enough to avoid any impatience.

Toni was not bored.

20200722-DSC08990-X3.jpg

Anyone that has read my previous reports knows the special bond I have with Toni. We were the ones getting up early and hitting the parks on our own after grabbing a quick breakfast. So many great little adventures. I always said that once she became a teenager she would change into the sleepy, nasty and irrational creatures her siblings were; but to her credit she never did. She has always been up for waking up early and hitting the parks with her goofy Dad. Despite now being 18, a high school graduate and old enough to vote (and buy lottery tickets and cigarettes) she was just as enthusiastic as she was when she was 8 years old.

Isn't that right little girl?

Time to board.

20200722-DSC08994-X3.jpg

We asked for but denied the option to wait for the front seat. Darn you Covid!

Live animal? I think this was the first time I saw that.

We purchased train tickets to the top of Forbidden Mountain in hopes of catching a glimpse of the beastly creature.

After a thrilling ride up the mountain and a close call with the Yeti we decided to get a second look at her.

Back in the queue we joked that this would be the bed that Alex was going to sleep in when she arrived.

While editing my photos from this trip I decided to do something different for the rest of this series of Everest photos and edit them in black and white. I felt it really brought out some interesting contrasts and details. I hope you enjoy them.

Back to the World of Color;

Heading towards Dinoland we spotted these guys enjoying a leisure cruise.

Dinoland was the most vacant area of any Park that week. It looked practically abandoned.

This sign brought back some way back memories of spending time with Toni in the Boneyard.

I was shooting with the 85mm which is a short telephoto lens. Not the perfect lens in the Dinosaur queue so I focused on details.

20200722-DSC09076-X3.jpg

Sterg saw me taking a picture of the Dino feet which prompted this;

"Dad, they look like your toe nails."

That reminded me of a funny story in my very first Trip Report about getting a pedicure at the Beach Club. And besides, my baseball catcher damaged toenails have gotten so much better!

More details.

"Hi giant turtle on the wall." Toni splurted out.

Seeing the pictures of Toni in the Boneyard and now all grown up tugs at my heartstrings. On my last trip in 2017 my children were seven and three. We spent a whole evening in the Boneyard because neither of them wanted to leave. It was August. Hot and humid. There was a dance party going on so I just let them play while I listened to the music. When I saw the pictures of Toni, it hit me that they will never be that little again. I just hope my kids will still want to hang out with me like your kids hang out with you. Thanks for sharing.

Believe it or not, just when you think you are starting to loose them, they‘ll surprise you. My DD will soon be 15 and of course is always asking if she can do this, that or the other with friends. Her birthday is coming up, and Imagine my surprise when she said to me “I’ve told my friends that I’m available in the afternoon, but that the evening is reserved for my mom”

Really, really, like the B&W stuff. Way back when, when I was into photography I really enjoyed working with it in the darkroom. Sometimes color can be distracting. I learned a lot about light, shadows, and composition doing my own prints. Sometimes less is more, and can tell a better story.

I agree...my English college roommate got me on that beer.

When I saw this photo, my first thought was "I wonder what this would look like with a long exposure."

I'm glad I read further. :)

Beautiful shots!!!

Thanks!!
Just read through this report at work. You are an amazing photographer and story teller! Your family looks like a lot of fun as well, looking forward to the rest of the trip

Thank you and thanks for following along and commenting!

Following along and slowly getting caught up! I’m a lot like Val in some ways that I am a very pragmatic and practical person but not when it comes to Disney. It is my escape and the older I get the more I appreciate that!

I’m checking in to the Contemporary in 39 days! We were originally booked at Gran Destino, too, but I’m happy to be back at the Contemporary!

Absolutely nothing tests the bonds of a family quite like that first ride on Smuggler’s Run together.

Wonderful and beautiful photos, as always!

Awesome! Have a great trip with your beautiful and growing family!

Lol on Smuggler's Run!

Thanks for following and the nice words!

Follow Fractal.....search Fractal.....He teaches how he does it (but it's hard...but fun to attempt to duplicate) He has helped me immeasurably....but he corners the market creative composition.

Thanks for the endorsement and glad I can help!

Thanks for posting the link to your Smugmug. I have been wanting to do a Disney wall at home and may have to purchase a few of your awesome pics! Loving the trip report. 16 more days till Disney for us!

If you get to the point of ordering let me know and I'll give you a 20% code.

The black and white Everest photos give it such a different, dramatic look! I like how you notice more details in some of them than you do when they are in color. Exceptional!

Thanks so much @cgeric!

Absolutely love the black and white pictures because they are so “timeless” - if it weren’t for the picture of Toni wearing the mask, there is no way of knowing if they were taken a few weeks ago or several years ago.

Yes, as I was editing them I was getting a 1930's feel.

Thank you sir! Although I've never worked in a dark room I agree that B&W makes you look at a photo in a completely different way. Exposure is so much more important.

Photographing Dinosaur dark ride is the pinnacle of dark ride challenges.

First of all it's soooo freaking dark so if you don't have a camera with at least an APS-C sensor or bigger then just forget it. You'll need a fast lens; f/1.8 or faster. Don't forget terrific autofocus (although I had a little success with manually focusing back in 2015 but a lot of that was random luck).

Then you are in constant violent motion - I always kid that shooting Dinosaur puts you at grave risk of knocking a tooth out with your camera. It's really not that far from the truth! No other dark ride tosses you around like Dinosaur.

Your subject is also in motion which compounds the challenge. Did I mention how dark it was?

Once you have the appropriate gear that puts you into the realm of possibility of getting a good shot, you really have to know what you're doing. For this shot I had my Full Frame camera, an 85mm 1.8 lens and my settings as such;
ISO 4000 (due to the darkness), 1/160 second (due to all the motion) and that was probably too slow and f/1.8 which is wide open and allows in the most light. Arms tucked in tight to help stabilize the camera and center Autofocus as typically your subject is the only thing with any light on it. My camera also has "In body image stabilization" which helps a bit more.

If you go with a faster shutter speed you have to compensate for that by increasing the ISO. ISO is like an amplifier - if you crank up the amp too high the music gets louder but sound quality goes down. Same thing with ISO - the image
gets brighter but the quality of the image goes down. You lose detail and introduce unwanted "noise". It's always a fine line because if the shutter speed is too slow your shot comes out blurry.

Can one give a dinosaur the heimlich maneuver?

20200722-DSC09089-X3.jpg

20200722-DSC09090-X3.jpg

I put the camera away for the rest of the ride inside knowing I would have more chances at it.

Back to 2020.

20200722-DSC09097-X3.jpg

and back to the fisheye

We then made our way to Africa for a much needed treat and break.

Coming Up - Val arrives and then Alex arrives (but not without a little drama)! We bump into @coachwnh and crew and some crazy Safari photos.

Another "long exposure" shot. This one a full second long at f/16. Being in the shadows allowed that.

So many great insights that I had to quote them and comment

Jot some notes, ask the kids and actually the photos stir my memory the most.
Exactly how I do it for my TRs - the photo essay approach always works best
Same ride system I believe. Lots of fun!
I have not had the chance to ride either Ratatouille or Runaway railway
But the same system is used in TDL (Pooh's Hunnyhunt) and HKDL (Mystic Manor)
The trackless AGVs are well utilizedby Disney imagineers!

I see you...
This is an amazing piece of writing my friend - it seems based on comments alone that no one else picked up on it
Well done!!

No convenient trashcans that allowed me to frame this so I wedged my camera between two "barrier" rocks

All that plus a little post editing in Lightroom produced this;
Very impressive
"Enough that if it burned to the ground, Disney could use my photos to recreate it down to every detail."
Great comeback - put @fractal jr in his place!!

When you come to a fork in the road take it." - Yogi Berra
Only the best TRs have Yogi quotes in them!

Keep up the great work Chris
I am following along and looking for your great commentary (and enjoying the pictures of course)

Have to chime in about the black and white photos!
I found them so interesting. The subtle contrast between shades of B & W were fascinating.
I also like B&W films. The use of lighting in Casablanca is amazing. That's all they had to use at the time and I find it brilliant.
Anyway, thanks for the great photos from someone who takes lousy pictures and won't even carry a camera now

SPOILER ALERT (CONTINUED)

We end up here. Shhhh, maybe they won't see us.

Meanwhile Poe and The Resistance show up and attack!

Kylo spots us! Off we go again.

20200721-DSC08482-X3.jpg

Whoops, wrong turn.

20200721-DSC08483-X3.jpg

We slide into a sealed room but he's not giving up... This was a great effect!

We escape that onto a firing deck - think of a Star Wars version of the side of a pirate ship shooting canons.

The battle outside was now raging!

This really was pretty amazing. Not sure you can make this any more realistic.

Max, thanks again for following and taking the time to comment. I'm glad somebody picked up on the Predator reference!

That's right - you experienced the same system in HK and Japan. Works really well in Orlando.

I appreciate the "MacGyver" comparison. That's high praise!

Yes on Yogi Berra.

Thanks again!
