Sounds like this was taken when the eye passed over. Imagine when the backend came through. Those poor people. 😢

You’ve used the phrase “those poor people” with regard to the Bahamas several times in this thread. I happen to know that you are a decent human being, and know that each remark was sincere based on your own experience, never having had the misfortune to ride out a Cat 5 storm myself.

After watching the 6 o’clock news and seeing video from the Bahamas, including video from a woman saying “please pray for us” and “please send help”, all I could think was—those poor people.

My heart is a little cracked this evening after seeing that.

Norah O’Donnell was in Cocoa Beach. At 6pm, it was windy and overcast. By 6:30, she had her hood up and was being pelted by rain, with sideways palm fronds visible.

Everyone in Florida, be safe.

And now we approach that stage of the storm where the parks are closed and guests will be hunkering down in their resorts. A word of advice for all those in this situation:

- Cast members who are there in the ride-out crews are away from their families and homes to keep you safe. Their primary objective throughout the storm and in the immediate aftermath is the safety of the guests and the property. Treat them with respect and civility throughout the entire time. They will do their very best to keep you safe and when possible offer some entertainment; treat them appropriately.
- Each guest needs to take personal responsibility for themselves throughout the storm period. You should have snacks and water or other beverages in your room to last you 1-2 days while you are bunkered down. Don't be that guest standing at the restaurant or food court ranting they don't have everything you want to eat in the middle of the storm.
- It is unreasonable to expect the resort to run a full normal operations with full and normal services during and in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Please don't be that guest berating a cast member because they can't get you something you want during the storm or some service or restaurant menu items are not available.
- If you're staying a a resort where your room door opens to outside such as most Value and Moderate resorts, stay in your room during the storm. The last thing you need is to get injured by flying debris trying to get out and about while the worst of the storm is coming through.

This is a very slow moving storm so once the conditions kick in, it's going to take a long, long time for this one to leave us and while in the Central Florida area it appears it will not be as bad as our early fears it will still be dangerous and messy and should be respected.
How much is WDW charging for box lunches?

It’s unfortunate...but this is something that’s always possible.

You get plowed with 3 feet of snow in North Dakota...you have tornadoes drop on you throughout 2/3 of the US...you get torrential rains that cause life altering flooding in the Deep South and Appalachia...

Hopefully the storm moves off and the damage ends and the recovery begins and the lives are preserved...

To that end...I don’t recall a storm this strong near completely stopped?...others have slowed, but this is ridiculous.

The longer it hangs, the more variables could come back into play...as well.
Stay safe everyone!!! Currently weather looks great for our little long weekend get away next week. Let's hope it stays that way.
As long as you see the big picture...

I think Hurricane Maria did something fairly similar (though this is quite unique). Still, this is so crazy. I'm hoping it turns more northeast and avoids FL/GA/SC/NC, etc.

Honest question? Has a formed storm ever “spun out” in place without moving?

Typically you have to remove the water or put it into colder seas to kill it.

And once this thing starts moving again...are we to assume it will start regaining strength again?

Not good...I see Disney has gotten more “worried” and is implementing storm protocols. So I guess we found out that taking it seriously was the right move all along? And the obvious one.

I have to go to Orlando late Wednesday night to bring a friend back to Panama City...will I75 be operating southbound to Orlando? Essentially will I be able to get to Orlando coming from 75?

Probably...but really It’s still up in the air...nobody believed it when they said it would go right up Florida (4 days ago)...most everyone here seemed to believe it when it “wouldn’t impact their fast passes” (2 days ago)

Mama nature decided to reject both and she never shows her hand until the chips are down.

Translation: still no way to tell

Things are getting serious with flight cancellations now. Orlando MCO has 139 outgoing and 178 incoming cancelled - Fort Lauderdale FLL has 242 and 307, respectively. The airlines are as you might expect as well:
