Uhm, Cast Members are playing a "Role".... playing a Part.... if you work on Main Street USA you should play the part of being from the USA and honor its customs.... END OF STORY. The Cast Member's job (among other things) is to "Create the Illusion of Reality of what could be into what is" as if by magic... and most CMs do an outstanding job....working on Main Street USA is playing a part in Walt's reimagineering of his hometown's Main Street USA.

I wonder what Walt Disney would think of this?

Well said, Punta! I couldn't have said it better myself!

I think Walt Disney would be proud that Cast Members come from all over the globe to interact with guests and spread the Disney tradition of magic. I don't see how an international CM not putting their hand on their heart is ruining the show?

I did some quick research...

Moreover, generations of students who were introduced to flag etiquette prior to its enactment in 1998 were taught that the hand over the heart gesture was exclusively for the Pledge of Allegiance which has had the statutory requirement for much longer.

So perhaps not putting their hand on the heart is appropriate for turn of the century main street:shrug:

I did some research too...and according to my findings it is the law of the land since 1942. So it is as correct for Main Street USA....Disneyland was created in 1955 and as we all know Walt was very patriotic.

I STILL Stand on my earlier comment: CMs on Main Street USA are playing the role of being an hard working citizen working in his Anytown, USA .... therefore they should either be from the USA or "play the part" of being from the USA if they are not. If this is a problem, then perhaps it needs to be like World Showcase (unless I am mistaken) where if you work in Italy for example you must be Italian or of Italian heritage.

On December 22, 1942 the Flag Code became Public Law 829; Chapter 806, 77th Congress, 2nd session.

Sec. 5. That during the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in a review, all persons present should face the flag, stand at attention, and salute. Those present in uniform should render the military salute. When not in uniform, men should remove the headdress with the right hand holding it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Men without hats should salute in the same manner. Aliens should stand at attention. Women should salute by placing the right hand over the heart. The salute to the flag in the moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes.

The previous poster was making the point that Main Street USA is set in or around 1900, so the "roles" they're playing don't have any relation to flag codes passed in the middle of the 20th century — strictly speaking, anyway.

Are you seriously kidding me with this? You are so far to the right its pathetic. Any form of stopping what they are doing and respecting the flag is fine, no hand over heart necessary. Walt would be appreciative of the fact he was able to bring so many people from around the globe together. What's next? If you work in the Italian pavilion you must eat pizza everyday! Gimmie a break
