Sometimes projects just fall behind.

Yup. I know nothing about construction, but in the software world, typically we'll use up the entire projected time to get the "simplest" of things done.. and even then we'll be working behind the scenes after release. All because the unknown pops up and gets in the way, or someone creates drama the project could do without. I hear there is no shortage of drama within the the Disney company.

Is that picture from today? Where's the walls around Partners?

It is from today (the cloud cover and cold temps). The Partners statue is out of frame on the left side of the photo, so you cannot see the big box.

what are they doing?

I'm guessing this is at least partly to replace the railings (old ones already removed in that image) with the new higher ones they are required to install. They've already put them into some areas along the perimeter of the hub such as over toward the entrance area to Adventureland. As I understand it they'll be replacing all of them throughout the entire hub area with the new higher ones as part of this project.

Not to me it's not. All the whining about the castle cake is just that, whining. Combine that with.. Boo Hoo, Disney doesn't spend money on special things anymore and you have got a major contradiction in thought. I thought the castle cake was a fun and special way to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of WDW. It was a very temporary thing and it cost Disney tens of thousands of dollars to do it. Then all the whining started. I can hear them in the main office now saying... "Damm, we spend all that for a special effect and all we have gotten for our efforts is grief. See if we ever do that again." Now we get next to nothing. Sometimes I wonder if we don't just get what we deserve.

I have said that I hate the Hat and I do, but, if it had only been for that one year, I'd have thought it to be fine. But, it didn't work out that way. It overstayed it's welcome. The cake stayed just the proper amount of time and all that money spent became nothing but pieces of scrap fiberglass. I know that for some odd reason we aren't allowed to say that Disney is a business because I guess it isn't one. I'm not sure what it would be if not that, but, when it acts like a business everyone get mortally wounded. And they say that we have Pixie Dust in our eyes.
I understand what you are saying, however I felt bad for the people who went to WDW in 96-97 who had never been before and didn't know that the castle didn't always look like that. The forced perspective was completely thrown off kilter and the majesty of the castle when you rounded the corner on Main Street just wasn't the same.

Some people will always associate the Cake Castle with their first visit and I feel sorry for them.

Will this area be done by the time I go at the end of February? Seems like an easy project to switch out light posts, plantings and railings while also pouring the new "brown" concrete. I can't imagine something like this would take more than a few weeks. Then again, this is Disney, so it will probably take a year....

The part they are currently working on, on the Main Street side, should be done by then because they are going to start using that area as a Fastpass+ viewing area on 2/27. The rest of the hub work will likely stretch well into summer if not longer.

Then I guess that we will have to feel sorry for me. I went to DL once and do not have any plans to go again. One of the things I was looking forward to is seeing the original Haunted Mansion. Know what I got... the Holiday overlay. They do that every year and have the attraction closed for at least two months out of the year to make the change over. I was disappointed but, it was just one more make-believe thing in a Theme Park. With the castle cake at least I could appreciate the artistry and creative/engineering ability that it took to do that overlay all for one celebration and would be thrown away at the end. Pretty impressive if one is looking at a glass half full instead of half empty. I'm sure that those that went there in 96 and 97 are pretty much over it by now.:)

I'm pretty sure they'll be upgrading the light/speaker poles too. (I didn't see anyone mention that, but they might have!)

I agree with Goofyernmost about the castle cake. I LOVED that. But, it really was temporary. Back when they used to do something really cool and different every year, my family would drive all the way from Ohio to see what was new. It kept us coming back to see all the new temporary stuff because we knew it would only be there for a year. Now, things seem to last decades and not really be "limited-engagement specials" anymore, so there's less and less motivation to keep coming back.

I've been to Disneyland twice and both times Splash was closed. When I went to Tokyo Disneyland, Pooh was closed. Sure I was disappointed, but I just enjoyed all the other awesome craziness they had and got over the lack of Pooh.

I'm glad you mentioned the excitement of 'seeing what they do each year'. They seem to have forgotten that and rely so heavily on it being a tourist destination and 'people will come anyway so we don't need to do those things anymore'. They've lost touch with what brings people in and that's why so many stress that they just don't make the effort anymore.

The castle cake was ugly. I may not have loved it, but I do appreciate they used to bother with anniversaries. Like I've said before, it's pretty much a pin, a cupcake, maybe some merchandise, a speech with characters around and they call it a day. Meanwhile, Disneyland decorates it's castle, brings on new fireworks, a new night parade, fixes up their Fantasyland dark rides ... while we're still stuck with Pan from the 70s. They've fixed Mermaid's under the sea [we haven't], they added the dynamite scene to Big Thunder Mountain [we haven't] ...

Their Soarin' is going digital and I think HD too, ours is still dirty and dusty...... The Matterhorn is getting all new animatronic Abominable Snowmen, our Yeti still has a case of disco fever....... The list really just goes on.

Yep!

And all the proof I need that TDO does the bare minimum? The Frozen stuff. Anaheim clearly spent the money and TDO didn't. That about sums it all up.

Yeah I think some of my best memories of visiting the parks as a kid growing up every single year are from the temporary things...because they were just that - special. Now that they try to make everything special, it ends up being like my favorite line from The Incredibles, "when everything's special, then nothing is special". (Yes I modified it a bit to fit the situation, but the meaning still applies.)

The daytime fireworks and plane show at World Showcase was really cool as was the parade around the lagoon around the time Reflections of Earth first came out.
