Maid caught stealing at All-Star resorts

WOW! Makes you wonder how many people have been robbed! I don't normally kept track of the amount of $ I leave in the room safe and wouldn't notice if $20 went missing... I'll have to think twice about keeping money in the safe next time!

I believe the safes in the All-Star resorts are in wall and used by a physical key.... has that changed? can someone confirm
I know they were. No idea if that has changed during refurbs.
The AllStar safes are still opened with an actual key. We just used the safe every day on our trip. I didn't feel comfortable the days we went to the water parks and didn't want to take our wallets/camera with us (even though they were locked in the safe) so we left the "do not disturb" sign on the door and our rooms just weren't serviced that day. They did leave a bag with fresh towels and supplies on the door handle.

I have had stuff stolen from my room once. Disney did nothing about it.
In all our stays I've only had something taken once, while staying at Pop Century this past December. I filed a complaint as soon as we returned to our room and noticed something was missing but was told they "can't prove a theft because the mousekeeping staff had left for the day". Lesson learned. This was the second of a 10 day trip and I'll tell you NO mousekeeping got a tip that trip! You may say, well that's not fair. HA! I had asked who had made up our room that day (not afraid to take matters into my own hands!:devilish:) and they said they couldn't release that info. :grumpy: So no tip since I wasn't provided a name. Why tip the theif and the other mousekeepers had to suffer from their coworkers stupidity.

It only happened once and We are DVC Members so someone only went into our room once in the 5 days we were there. Our last trip we did not allow Mouse keeping into the room.

We were chatting with a family last year while waiting for the parade at one of the parties. They were staying at AKL and the place had just changed over to the new locks. The day before, their room had been entered and thousands of dollars worth of computer stuff and other electronics had been stolen from their room. They suspected the cleaning staff, but apparently were not able to prove anything.

So sad to hear... I have always trusted them, left ipads out, laptops, jewelry and have been fine in all my travels. I have used safe with no issues for cash as well. One time I used the hotel lobby desk to have them hold a large sum of cash before and they held it under lock and key I guess with no issues. I guess it is true what they say "The mouse will get your money no matter what." LOL This is just one bad egg out of many many good tip deserving ones please keep that in mind.

I sometimes use the safe for non vacation/business things I bring with me when we fly back to Florida, and stay a day or two at Disney before we go home. We fly into Orlando airport and it is really hard to drive by Disney when we get picked up from the airport and not stop for the day or so. If the safes are not "safe" then why have them? We always put the Do Not Disturb on the door because we can certainly go a couple days without maid service, especially because we are DVC and they don't do maid service every day anyway. I can't imagine any circumstances why a Mousekeeper should have any access to the safes.

Then how did she get the cash from the safe?
Hotelier here. These type of crimes are opportunistic. Many guests do not properly lock their safes, forget to lock them, don't fully close the door leave the room forgetting there is still stuff in the opened safe and so on.The maid doesn't do anything special, just tugs at the door and sees if it opens. If it doesn't she moves on if it does then bingo she takes stuff. No access other than not fully locked safes needed. They do not have direct or special access.

The safety rule is this, the last thing you should do before leaving your room is tug on the safe door and see if it will open. If it does then re lock it and try again.

In many hotels (and I doubt Disney is an exception), there are ways into the in-room safes without having to drill them open.

Although housekeeping isn't officially given the codes (or keys, as the case may be), it would be simple for someone who has/knows it to give it to a housekeeper...especially if the housekeeper pays them or is friendly with them.

I was a guest once and they checked me into a room that still had a maintenance cart in it. Sitting on top of the cart was a master key and a list of codes, one with the safe override code, lol.

Instead of calling the desk and telling them to have maintenance come get the cart, I could have robbed everyone in the hotel. I kind of fantasized about it on the phone with my mother, lol. I pointed out the card to the guy who picked the cart up and said they might want to get that changed. He said they weren't supposed to write it down like that, but the guy was new.

They weren't even trying to give me a key and the code...but I got them.

Housekeeping already has access to rooms...getting the safe code/key...not a huge stretch, IMO.

I doubt Genius Thief woman was the first to try this. She won't be the last, either.

This kind of stuff happens all the time people just don't complain about it. Didn't Disney outsource to some 3rd party company to do the cleaning in all of their rooms? They have zero quality control now.

One of the reasons that I no longer carry cash. On our October trip I'll probably get $100 for just in case, but everything goes on the card. So few places do cash only anymore so it's much easier.

On your Credit Card, or Disney Gift Card? I'm thinking of just using the GCs this trip and not just cash.

The problem's with gift cards is there is not always a recourse if they are lost or stolen. If you lose a credit card, one phone call can make it all better. If you lose a gift card, you might as well have lost cash in most situations.
