But the ~$1 worth of components and lackluster features just make it all seem a bit pointless.
Of course it's pointless! This whole enterprise is pointless! You pay $12 for a balloon, $7 for a box of popcorn, wait 90 minutes for a 90 second ride through a plastic mine filled with cartoon robots, and spend $60 for a crappy dinner where you get to hug four teenagers in furry costumes, but this.... THIS is the line in the sand. A step too far.

Holy crap with the "pointless" and "waste of money." We're all here wasting our money because we think it's fun. Blinky buzzy lights are stupid and fun.

You get the priviledge of needing to remember to charge your band up, in exchange for 4 tiny blinking LEDs...very magical.
You don't "need to remember" to charge anything. Let it die, it'll still work.

It's not a bad complaint at all - if you are purchasing it inside the park you shouldn't have to worry about it not being charged and then having to update it. All of which is time-consuming and just adds another minor level of stress to an already annoying theme park experience.

Any product running on a rechargeable battery is going to lose some of its charge while sitting on a shelf unused. The only way to guarantee a full charge would be for a CM to open every box and charge every band before stocking the shelves. And then take the unsold ones down and do it all over again every day. That's not exactly a realistic expectation, nor is it feasible even if there weren't staffing issues. We pay much more for phones and don't expect a full battery out of the box, so why would anyone expect a cheaper product with a smaller battery to defy science and not lose its charge while in storage? If buying a MB+ in the parks with the intention of using it right away, bring a portable charger.

Any idea if there is going to be a Starcruiser-exclusive MB+? If you take an early shuttle from the ship to Batuu, you have time to play around, and playing the Bounty Hunter game would be a fun way to spend some time. It would be cool if there was a Starcruiser exclusive that would obviate the need to wear/bring separate MBs. Or maybe a handheld puck like on Mandalorian?

Yes, I'm part of the problem. Feel free to ridicule.
I believe there was supposed to be one, but now they are in a weird place where they don't want to roll out a beta version of something for Starcruiser guests when their band needs to work 100% for 2 days.

So they may just stick with the starcruiser exclusive mb2 if they are smart. I know I'll that I should at least be able to purchase the Starcruiser Exclusive MB as someone who paid the ransom early. THere would be a lot of others too

It's literally illegal to ship rechargeable batteries fully charged. Disney cannot, by law do what you'd like them to do.
They could have designed the packaging so that the retail locations could access the ports to charge them. They could do it on a rolling basis throughout the day as they go through inventory.

It seems like it should have been a no brainer for devices sold in a theme park, designed to be used in a theme park, by a company that claims to delight in giving their customers great experiences.

Starcruiser does not have a MB+ yet. They are still giving the exclusive MB 2.0 to their guests

This is just impractical.

For the Bounty Hunters game and the statue interactions, is there technology in the band that limits those experiences to MB+, or could the long-range RFID in MB2 do the same thing and Disney is just locking them behind a paywall?

(I'm not accusing, I'm asking sincerely.)

I think the fact MB+ has bluetooth and works with your phone is the reason why it isn't part of MB2. MB+ needs the app for the "bounties".

They could do something with Play Disney Parks and allow phones to do the bluetooth stuff (like they kind of already do) but who knows.

March 2021 for Apple Watch, but that is because Apple rolled out a solid product and developer framework for Disney to use. Android did not.

With the google wallet update and the rumored upcoming pixel watch any android watch running wearOS should get the "passes" update around the same time. I specifically upgraded my galaxy watch 3 to 4 because it has wearOS, hopefully by november I will only need my watch instead of dual wielding my watch and magic band.

It's also not a "port." These come with chargers that are similar to what you get with a FitBit. If you could insert a plug into them then they wouldn't be water-resistant and people would rightfully be angry if their MB+ was ruined because they got soaked on Splash Mountain or Kali River Rapids.
That doesn't really seem to be the case though. iPhone is waterproof and has a port.

Fair point. MB+ would still need to be removed from its packaging in order for a CM to charge it, though, because it uses that FitBit-style charging dock. Even if it had a port, the notion that CMs in the gift shops have the time to charge every single MB+ each day to ensure that they have a full charge out of the box is unrealistic. They'd be charging hundreds of them per day per store. In the Tim Tracker video, he said it was about 45 minutes to get a full charge from 20%. Even if you cut the average charge down to 30 minutes per band to account for bands with more of a charge, you're talking about hundreds of hours worth of charging. Even charging several at a time, there can't possibly be enough outlets in any of those shops to accomplish that task in a reasonable amount of time. And if someone thinks, "Well just charge the number they typically sell in a day," that still doesn't work because A. these are new and they couldn't possibly know how many will sell each day yet, and B. they'd have to know how many to charge for each of the 2 dozen or so styles they have available. It's not quite the Seinfeld-esque "Yankees Fitted Cap Day" scenario, but it's not that far off, either.

iPhones aren't waterproof.

You can drop one in a puddle but you can't take it swimming for an entire afternoon. They're rated for 30 minutes of submersion.
Have we ever seen an IEC rating for a MagicBand? Would be interesting to see how it compares to something like an iPhone, which does pretty well at IP68 - 6 meters for 30 minutes.

It is interesting that it specifically says on shopDisney that magicband+ is waterproof rather than resistant, if the port is the weakest link to water resistance, they could gone the wireless charging route, I doubt wireless vs. external charging prices would have been much different. If it was wireless charging too they could add a wireless charger to the display case and keep them all charged during purchase.

I might be wrong but wireless charging would involve more hardware and possibly licensing..
