So I have a trip coming up in June, and so far there area only the old magic bands as an option, and I am wondering how long they will keep those around because as of now, there are only 2 designs available. We plan to use old ones that we received a year and a half ago, but I might be tempted to get these new ones for the kids.

If you have a smartphone with BLE support, you no longer need a MB for ride photo linking. IMO, this significantly increases the usefulness of older MBs with a dead battery, since as long as you have your phone the photos will still link.
Does one need to do anything in MDE for this to happen? I've never had an on-ride photo linked this way. Unless my MB is overriding a bluetooth grab?

It's the same technology. If your phone app is set up and has the permissions to share bluetooth then it can send out a signal identifying you the same way a powered MB does. I had to enable the permissions in my prior phone last year when it launched. This past trip I had a new MB so I can't say whether it worked with my new phone or not.

I haven't used it this way, but I recall seeing signage in the queue on the rides to check if your MagicMobile is ready/set up for on ride photos. There was a QR code, and then probably took you to confirm/turn on whatever settings/permissions would be needed (didn't scan it since I didn't plan to use it)

I wonder if one could use one's blue tooth phone to already start to interact with the 50th Anniversary statues.

Maybe they come to life like the artifacts in "Night at the Museum"! Synergy!!! 😂

But seriously, that's an excellent question. I'm guessing it's turned off at the moment, but if someone wanted to do some research... ;)

The MB selection is so laughable right now, and has been for a while, that you just have to believe that pre-arrival MB+ will be online soon. Eleven of us going at the end of May, so I'd like to outfit those of us without Apple Watches with the new ones. Curious to see how it goes!

There are permissions one needs to set up in their phone. The crappy part is I set up all the correct permissions and get nothing. My phone is less than 2 years old. There are QR codes outside of rides like HM to help set up. I'm getting a new phone (thanks to good trade ins) and will try again. I've had back luck with it previously though.

My kid loved Pal Mickey. We still have it in our storage.
We still have ours too :) And a great WDW memory attached. Somehow Pal Mickey was lost in the park. We’d written our name on the strap so went to see if anyone turned it in. Cast Member came out with a new one for us, which we really weren’t expecting since it was $85. That was big money back in ‘05… iirc that trip cost something like $1200 for airfare, park tickets and onsite room (Feb, ASMu, 2 adults + toddler). Last time we checked maybe 4 yrs ago Pal Mickey was still working.

Ok. I have allowed permission so I guess we shall see on our next trip. I'm using a Note20 so plenty new enough for this to work.

As the planner in my family, I would love to just use a magic band and not a phone but it's just not going to happen.
