Magical Express bags?

I just got off the phone with reservations. Here's the dilemma - we are getting into Orlando at 9 pm and want to have our checked bags immediately. We are flying Delta. The cast member in reservations said no matter what I cannot pick up my own checked luggage and bring it myself to Magical Express bus loading area. :veryconfu

Is this true? I thought I remembered others on here saying that they picked up their own luggage from baggage claim and brought it to the DME buses themselves. Maybe this was just when they were on a non-participating airline...

What should I do to make sure my bags don't get taken straight to my resort with the rest of the Disney resort guests?

Thanks in advance!

I think we are going to leave our luggage to Disney to take care of. However, I was wondering when we would get it. We check in at midnight. Now I don't care if they come through the middle of the night to give it to us, so long as we have it first thing in the morning. Can someone tell me if they deliver luggage to the rooms throughout the night?

I believe someone on this site mentioned that they stop bringing bags to your room in the really late/early hours of the night/morning and they hold them at the bell services or front desk until you come for them in the morning. Something like that.

Here is the dead solid accurate truth on DME and luggage ....

If you DON'T put the DME tags on your bags, you CAN claim them yourself at baggage claim and take them to your bus (although figmentmom's experience was a new one for me!!!). Just keep in mind that if you do this you will be delaying yourself compared with others who opted to use DME the way it was designed.

If you DO put the DME tags on your bags, the goal is to have them delivered to your room about 3 hours after you arrive AT YOUR RESORT, not 3 hours from your flight landing. Since the average time for PEOPLE from landing to resort drop-off is 70 minutes, figure your luggage is supposed to arrive by about 4 hours after landing.

Most important tip: YOU DON'T NEED TO WAIT IN YOUR ROOM FOR YOUR LUGGAGE! It will be delivered to the inside of your room whether you're there or not.

If your flight arrives late at night, you SHOULD expect a phone call or knock at your door in the middle of the night. They do NOT automatically hold luggage 'til morning, but they certainly will if you ask them to.

No matter where I fly, I always pack a carry-on for the first 24 hours, just in case the AIRLINE delays my luggage. Honestly, how difficult is it to put a travel size tube of toothpaste and a small deodorant into a zip-top baggie? If you've ever been unlucky enough to have airline-delayed luggage, you'd appreciate how great it is to have SOME of your stuff with you to start your vacation in comfort and style.

Over the past 2 years I've looked into DME, really researched it as much as possible, plus used it twice. On another board we have a Disney CM involved with DME (and separate from that is a former DME driver) as well as a local ground transportation guy who gets a lot of info straight from OIA management, so we've learned lots and lots of DME info that I'd love to share if there are any more questions about it.

It's really a great service. I used it when it was only 4 days old. We went from plane to resort in 63 minutes. The luggage arrived a few hours later -- I'm not sure when, because we were in the pool (swim stuff in our carry-ons) enjoying the start of our vacation and found our luggage in our room when we got back. On my 2nd trip, 3 months ago, we went from airplane to resort in 56 minutes. Luggage was delivered 2.25 hours after we arrived. Well, they called and wanted to deliver it, but since it was 1:16 a.m. we decided to wait 'til morning. I forgot to ask them to hold the luggage 'til morning. My mistake, but I fell back asleep very quickly.

I cant swear for Policy, however I can tell you that on one of my trips when I arrived very late ( this is a rare thing for me, I am usually on a morning flight) I had gone to the Bell Services in All Star Sports and told them to hold the luggage till the following day, as I had packed my carry on with everything I would need for the first night and we were moving to the Coronado Springs resort the following morning. As Bell Services was SWAMPED with people ( there was a lightning storm which was delaying the arrival and delivery of baggage) we figured this would be OK. The gentleman we spoke to seemed quite happy to NOT have to deliver two more rooms worth of stuff. At 2 am my best friend was woken up by a knocking on her door to deliver our things!!! so I wouldnt bet on Bell services NOT Delivering your stuff even if it is late!!! That having been said, I think that was the ONLY glitch I have run into and I have used DME a few times a year since its inception and think it is a great system. Belle

This is probably the best piece of advise. As a person who has had their luggage "lost" by an airline (nothing to do with DME) I have found it absolutely necessary to bring at least a change of clothes in a carry-on bag in the event my luggage is "lost".

I would also recommend bringing any medications that you are dependent upon taking with you in a carry-on. And always bring more than you plan to stay. Check with your airline about any measures that you may need to take to get your medications past security checkpoints.

In 2003, I hada major problem with AirTran. Our flight was cancelled due to mechanical difficulties. The next flight to NYC that they could get me on was 3 days later. Having an annual pass I was just going to extend my vacation. (Not really a problem for me.) But my father's wife only brought enough of her needed meds to last for the duration of our scheduled trip. She could not stay another 3 days without it so we had to take a flight to Philadelphia and drive back to NYC.

Honestly, DME is wonderful. I would just put the tags on your bags and be done with it. The only way the system gets screwed up is if the AIRLINE messes it up and loses your bag, not Disney. If the airline actually gets your bag to the correct destination, then it doesn't matter if you or the Disney people get it, and why not let them do it as long as you are paying for the amenities of a Disney resort anyway?

When I fly, I always have enough toiletries to last me for a day as well as a clean pair of underwear and my bathing suit.. I never had a problem with losing my luggage or with Magical Express, but I don't take the chance.. I especially bring anything essential wiht me in my carry on (ie: glasses, contact lens solution, perscription meds, deoderant, toothbrush and paste).. I know this reiterates what others have said on here but I feel it's the best way to go..

Paul, I couldnt agree with you more. I always advise people to do a carry on piece of luggage. Some of the items I would tell you to NEVER put into checked luggage are as follows: Money, traveler's checks, prescription medications, eyeglasses, change of contact lenses, any camera equipment, and a change of clothing as appropriate. These items should be carried on your person or packd in the carry on to remain with you. Belle

ME Bags

I agree with Nemo14 . Just so you know, If you arrive late into Orlando Intl Airport, after 10:30 p.m.. The luggage service hired by Disney for Magical Express closes. This is not published anywhere. What occurs is that your luggage will be left at the airport overnight and delivered to you the next day. This happened to us. After me insisting for 2.5 hours that I wanted my bags, and complaining bitterly, the night duty Manager at the Boardwalk Inn had to send Disney employees to the airport to retrieve our luggage. As an aside, the Manager kept telling me to go back to the room and they would bring up our luggage when it arrived. I did that at first for one-half hour. Manager had not even attempted to inquire about our luggage or have same retrieved. When I went back down to the lobby he admitted this. His idea was for us to fall asleep and deal with it the next day. We landed at 11:15 p.m. ( after plane delayed 2 hours). We arrived at Boardwalk at 12:25 a.m. My luggage arrived at 4:00 a.m.

FYI Disney Manager told me the following: 1. Disney not responsible for Magical Express. This is simply a name licensing to Mears and a contract for luggage service to Mears. 2. Disney not responsible for lost luggage or luggage left at the airport overnight. Luggage is not in Disney's control until it is unloaded at resort.

So, don't use the tags and retrieve your own luggage. You can't always plan for a delay of the flight. Once your bags are tagged and taken by the airlines you can't get them back.

I have no problem with this so long as I know ahead of time (which I now do). Do you know when the next day it is supposed to be delivered? We get in at midnight so this applies to us. We'll just pack clothes and whatnot for the first day in our carryon.

The first ME bag trucks (small white panel trucks with lifts attached to the rear) arrive at the resorts around 10:30 a.m. The trucks you see earlier at the resorts are only for departing luggage pickups.

Hubby and I used Magical express in Oct. 2005 and we also had an evening flight and we were worried about our luggage getting to our room so we went to baggage claim and picked up our luggage. However, when we inquired about this we were told it would be no problem as long as we did not put the magical express tags that they sent in the mail on our bags. We left the tags home and we picked up our own bags with no problems.
I have heard that it can take 3 or more hours for the bags to be delivered to your room if you let magical express pick them up for you!
I hope this info helps!

We did this too when we flew down on Christmas Eve, later in the evening and we had our decorations for the room in them. We are probably going to do the same in April since we get in at 8 at the airport, but we have a by then 7 month old and don't need extra noise if we have him down for the night once in the room, plus we may want to hit the pool for a few after getting in.

This is SOOOO incorrect. I'm not doubting it's what you were told, but what you were told is incorrect.

DME is NOT Mears. Repeat: DME is not Mears. This is a common misconception even among some Disney CMs who don't know any better. They hear that Mears is involved and then wrongly assume that Mears runs it. To say that Mears runs DME is like saying that Coca-Cola runs Disney's beverage sales. Coca-Cola is a major supplier of product and materials, but Disney decides how and when and where to sell it and is in charge of doing so, not Coca-Cola; they also sell beverages other than those supplied by Coca-Cola (milk, coffee, etc.). I hope you can understand this analogy.

First of all, Mears is a subcontractor. Mears supplies buses and drivers. Mears makes no decisions about where the buses go or how they are dispatched, this is Disney's area. Think of it this way -- in terms of people transportation, Mears is the muscle but Disney is the brains.

Second, Mears has nothing to do with baggage, unless you're talking about people whose baggage is taken by the people themselves to the bus for the driver to load under the bus. But in terms of luggage delivery, that has NOTHING to do with Mears.

There is another subcontractor, ARINC (don't know what the initials stand for) that handles logistics, and BAGS Inc. that handles the Resort Airline Check-in desk and the baggage delivery from resort to airport.

Disney absolutely IS responsible for lost luggage. Well, let's put it another way. Once the custody of the luggage changes hands from the airline to Disney, Disney is responsible for it.

Here's how it works (all without a Mears employee in sight):
1. Most of the major airlines drop off DME-tagged luggage at designated drop off points where they are then picked up by a different contractor and taken to a sorting facility. These drop off points are supervised by Disney CM's.

2. Not all airlines use the drop off points. In those cases, Disney stations CMs at the behind-the-scenes conveyor belts to pull the DME-tagged bags off and set them aside (before they make it out onto the baggage claim carousel) to be picked up and taken to the sorting facility.

3. There are Disney CM's assigned to every airline to catch the bags that the airlines missed taking to the drop off point. They also check every unclaimed bag against a manifest to insure that the bags are found even if by chance the guest forgot to put on the tag or it fell off (highly unlikely).

4. All of the bags are scanned when they get to the sorting facility, again after they are put in a cage and again when the cage is put in a truck.

5. The trucks all have GPS devices and their location can be pinpointed at any time.

6. The bags are scanned again when they arrive at the resort and again when taken to a guest's room.

Because of this system, Disney is well aware of where the bags at all times.
If you put DME tags on a bag that doesn't show up, it is Disney's responsibility to track it down for you. They do this without notifying you, so you can just enjoy the start of your vacation. In the few instances when people have waited 8 or 12 or more hours for their luggage to be delivered, many times it wasn't the fault of DME but was because the airline misdirected the luggage (for instance, sending it to MCI instead if MCO) and DME made sure it got reunited with their guest once the airline got the bags to MCO where it belonged.

"simply a name licensing to Mears and a contract for luggage service to Mears" -- so incorrect. Again, I;m sure this is what you were told, but it is simply untrue. You can even look it up on Disney's website, all of the subcontractors to DME and their roles. Mears is one of the subcontractors. The tail does not wag the dog.

I don't know how many of you used the old Mears shuttle system before DME started. Clearly, Mears ran a very inefficient service. Disney, an expert in nearly all it does, created a MUCH MUCH more efficient system, and Mears follows that system's rules regarding the transportation of passengers, nothing more.

Hey there Cleve thanks for all the great information!!!! I knew some of it but didnt have that much information to back it up!!!! If Disney wasnt running the service to their satisfaction there would be absolutely no business logic that would make sense to put their name on a substandard service such as what Mears did provide in the past ( I have used both services pretty extensively) DME blows Mears services out of the water by a long margin. The timing is far better than anything that I have seen Mears do ( I have NEVER Made it to my resort in about 1 hour with Mears) And of course the price cant be beat. Once again Cleve thanks for your great explanation!!! Belle

It's also important to note that Disney doesn't force any guest to use DME. They simply provide this service as a complimentary perk to its resort guests. If you have problems with it, there are plenty of other modes of transportation to WDW to use.

You have to laugh at some of the paranoia though. People trust the airlines to check all of their important belongings, but don't trust Disney to pick it up and deliver it? DME is a very reliable, usable service. Vacationers: Fear not the yellow tags! Throw your suspicion away, and enjoy a little pampering! Don't risk a hernia by lifiting your own bags off the claim! Trust in the mouse, and you shall be rewarded...

Wow - everyone's been so helpful with all this DME info! I had no idea what I was getting into asking this question I guess. :p

Anyway, here's another couple questions - when are you supposed to receive the yellow tags in the mail? My reservation's been made for about a month now. Do they send them closer to your departure? (mid-April) And if for some reason we don't get them, does it seem that a Disney Mickey ears tag will suffice? I have a few of those from Pop Century...

You should get them a couple of weeks before your trip. Your other tags will not do, so if you don't get your DME tags, call a week or so before your departure aqnd they will get them to you.

When DME started they were sending them out 3 weeks in advance (regardless of when you made the reservations), but over the past few months they've been sending them out 406 weeks in advance. Start watching your mailbox!:sohappy:
