Magic your way packages

I posted this question in another thread, but I feel it almost deserves its own thread. First off, I want to make sure I have the basic facts correct before I go on to my next point:

Do I remember correctly that anyone under 17 stays in the room for free? Or is it 13? And anyone under 3 gets into the parks for free? And in order to get a package, everyone in the room must have at least one day's park admission and everyone has to have the same amount of days?

What I am about to ask is based on an affirmative answer on all of the above questions. Here it goes:

When we stayed at POR last month, we used 10 day parkhoppers with the NE option. We used 5 of those days, giving us a 5 day pass to use on future trips. If funds allow, we want to go on vacation again next year and the two issues have been whether or not to bring our son (who just turned a year old this month) and whether to go back to WDW or try something different (a cruise is the next most likely option, with a Disney land/see cruise a strong contender). I was almost convinced to go for the cruise, so I ordered my passport yesterday. My wife wanted to hold off on getting hers, but I don't regret ordering mine, as we will surely use it in the next 10 years, either going to Canada or on a cruise.

Anyway, the thought came to me that maybe we should do another week at WDW next year (with or without the baby not totally decided yet) due to the fact that if we bring him along, he is under 3 and won't need tickets and if we don't bring him, then obviously he doesn't need tickets either. That way, we can book a package with dining (although I understand we would have to purchase at least a one day park pass to do so) and use the remaining 5 days on our tickets. However, if we do something else next year, then we will still have that 5 day pass to use (since I understand that park admission is included with a Disney land/sea cruise anyway). And we probably wouldn't be back until our son is over 3, as we plan to start on our next child after next year so we would not be going on a vacation the following year due to the costs of having a baby. So if we went back with our son when he is over 3 years old, if I understand correctly, in order to book a package, we would have to buy theme park admission tickets to match the amount of days on our son's ticket. Is that correct, even though our son would not add to the cost of the room? I guess what I am asking is this: does WDW only consider a person to be "in the room" if they are old enough to have to pay to stay in the room? Or, despite the fact that a 4 year old does not add to the cost of the room, would we still have to get the same ticket plan as him in order to book a package? The point I am making is that if the latter is the case, then we would be stuck in a situation where we always have unused tickets that we never get a chance to use up, because we would always be having to buy tickets to match our children in the room with us. So again, I'm thinking maybe we should do WDW again next year, use up those tickets, and then do a cruise another year.

Is my reasoning sound, or do I have some of those facts incorrect?

If what I am thinking is correct, and I understand your question correctly.. If your child is under 3, then you don't have to purchase them tickets or dining plan.. If your child is over 3 then yes, you would have to buy her/him the same tickets as everyone else and dining option.

Yes, that is what I was asking. So, I guess I was correct: if we took our son (who would then be over 3 by the time we take him after next year), we would not be able to get him a 5 day child parkhopper while we use up ours from last year, which would mean that we're always going to have extra days on our ticket, since we would always have to buy tickets to match our son's (and any other children we may have by then that we bring).

We were having a hard time deciding whether to go back to WDW next year or try something new, but this is helping to make the choice much easier. :D

Okay, if I followed all that... you can just buy his ticket from another source. Get the tickets you need to fulfill the package, but buy his from the gates or before you go. Don't try to make that third ticket part of the package.

Does that make sense, or is it even what you were asking?

Everyone get one ticket with your package. Now you and your wife have 6 tickets and son has one. Get your son 5 more tickets at the gate, from the Disney store, or from MapleLeaf tickets or something. Now everyone has 6 tickets for 6 days of fun!

Or, buy everyone on the package a single day ticket, including your son.

At check-in, upgrade your son's ticket to a 6 day or whatever you need. It's cheaper to do an upgrade than to purchase a separate 5 day ticket from somewhere else.

You use your single days ticket and your 5 day tickets, and all tickets will be used up.

I never thought about just getting him a one day ticket and then upgrading it. Good idea.

Unfortunately, we're back to having a hard decision to make now. :ROFLOL:

If you want a package, that's what I would suggest.

But there does remain the question, do you *need* to book a package. Most MYW packages just give you the room and the tickets at their regular price. They're just bundled for a little more convenience. But, you can always just book a room-only reservation and then buy whatever tickets you need, with no requirement to have everyone get the same thing.

My group always books room-only reservations (though it's usually due to getting an Annual Pass discount). This coming September will be my first time ever with a package, thanks to the Free Dining promotion. And for that, we're doing the "everyone gets 1-day ticket then upgrades it" plan. Two of us have APs, and won't need the tickets, so when I'm done with the trip, I'll have a 1-day ticket left over for a future trip.

Take a trip with out you son and use your days. It can be one last "hoorah" for you with out the stress of having the child on vacation. Also, it will amke planning the next trip easier.

Take the Disney cruise and then you will not have to worry about the Park passes.

Yes I will, because the fact remains that we do currently have 5 unused days on our 10 day parkhopper pass from last month. That's the whole issue I was addressing in this thread: I have 5 days to use sometime. Maybe next year, maybe another year. But my issue was what to do with that pass when we return with our son after he turns three, and we all have to book the same tickets in order to book a package.

Ya, I thought of that, too, and you're right. Technically, I don't *HAVE* to book it as a package. However, last month's trip spoiled me to where I feel like I just have to have the dining plan. I loved having a table service meal each night as well as the fun of picking my restaraunts as part of the trip planning process. Now I can't imagine spending a week there and just eating at quick service joints the whole week. So if I want the DDP, I have to book it as a package.

That's what we're leaning towards as well, at this point. Unfortunately, however, the decision of whether to do WDW again, or something else, became alot more difficult yesterday when I was informed in this thread that I can keep my 5 day pass, book a package with one day passes for everyone, then just upgrade my son's to a 5 day pass. That kind of shot down the argument that we should go to WDW next year to get the tickets used up. So now we're back to having to decide what we want to do next year. :(

Darnit, if only I hadn't posted this thread, then we would still be thinking we have to do WDW next year because of the tickets, then the choice would be so simple. :hammer:
