OK, first of all, it really isn't better than nothing. It's just about as good as nothing. Tiki Room is a walk-on any time of the day. The purpose of EMH is to give Resort Guests more time in the parks, with shorter waits.

Secondly, I go in January every year. Maybe it's considered slow season, but as a CM, do you really believe all attractions are walk-ons? If you'd like, I'll be more than happy to post some pics of the waiting times encountered in slow season.

Tiki Room is walk-on all day, which means - OH! I can save that for last! Have more time to do Splash during the day while it's still running! OR! I can do Splash multiple times first in the beginning of the day, do all the walk-on/slow stuff then hit all the other E-tickets at night! :)

Not ALL attractions are walk-ons. Of course the most popular stuff isn't.

Anything more than 30-40 minutes though, if it isn't TSM? Definitely odd for that time of year. 30-40 for the most popular rides is extremely slow, like park is dead slow. The only exception to that rule is MLK Day (and this past January, which was just weird by our standards to have modest-sized crowds).

Uhh....Having no EMH hours at Epcot during the entire month of January is wrong. I have no idea where you got your information from but the usual Epcot slots are there.

First off -- I wrote "no EPCOT EMH hours during our trip." I'm sure there are some EMH at some point during the month of January. Alas, we will not be visiting for the entire month.

Second.......

Tuesdays = Mornings; Fridays = evenings.

You are correct about Tuesday mornings. Unfortunately, that is check out day for us. Again, according to the calendar posted above -- I see no evening EMH for Friday January 11. Friday January 18, yes. But I will be long gone from the World at that point.

I'm interested on where you are getting your info. CM calendar?

Something is better than nothing.

You can punch me in the face instead of kicking me in the junk, it doesn't mean I'm going to say thanks. I was so glad when they brought back the old Tiki show. Know how many times we've been to the show since they swapped it out.......once. I don't even ride Splash but I think this is a crappy trade off.

I would really like to hear @Alektronic take on this.

It's hard to believe this is nothing but a managment profit scheme.

Actually, it is to give more time for maintenance. 3rd shift usually comes in at 11pm and works until 7am. 3rd shift is by far the biggest crew and do a lot of pre startup inspections and preventative maintenance. Splash for instance, takes a long time for inspections and corrective maintenance. The ride needs to be running and they have to cycle each log into storage and do all the inspections and replace any parts that are failing or need to be replaced and they have extra inspections to do because of the lap bars, it takes quite a while especially if you don't have that many people. You need someone in the tower and running load/unload, then you need people in the pits doing the inspections, they have to start up the ride about 4am and that means no other maintenance is getting done, but of course, if they had more manpower then they could get more work done. That dept also has to check Big Thunder, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Small World, Peter Pan, CBJ, and Tiki.

I am going to be cautiously optimistic and say, hopefully there is an actual plan (other than just saving money). I am not a fan of SM (my tummy hates the drop), but I am very aware of how popular it is and how the Tiki Room is not even close to a replacement. I'm sincerely hoping this one step of a larger plan for better things!

Thanks Alek, I trust your information. but it truely is a shame that the maintenence CMs have been cut to such a level that we have to cut back on operation time in order to do repairs instead of just staffing properly.

So what if they're trading the Tiki Room for Splash? It's an alternative. At least you HAVE another attraction. Granted, not at the same level of being e-ticket, but you have another one. Something is better than nothing.
The problem with your assumption is that you're taking the view that Walt Disney World is some sort of charitable or public service. People are paying for a certain product and it is perfectly reasonable to expect to experience popular attractions at a time when this is the purpose.

What if your favorite restaurant had a dinner platter who love and they raised the price? Not too big of a deal, costs go up, etc. But what if they then replaced one of the sides with a cheaper side that is also a smaller portion? That would be a bit of an issue because you are paying more, but getting less. Same issue is at play here. There are certain reasonable expectations regarding what is being purchased.

And, another confirmation for maintenance.

Seems like '74 missed it again. LOL
The maintenance is still part of budgetary cutbacks. These widespread needs for more time are the result of the maintenance crews being whittled away in their resources and manpower to save on costs.

Wow this went south in a hurry. Point is its a service that used to be offered and now is not. For whatever reason this is just something we have to get used to in this day and economic time. I think we all just hoped that Disney would hold out longer. Its sad but I'm going to put my Main Street USA goggles on and say Disney should know what its doing. As for complaints, everyone has the right to complain its a service that whether it was a perk or not is no longer available. People's money will now grant them slightly less value on Disney property. Nobody was nasty until someone started calling people whiners and spoiled. I think everyone has strong emotions about disney and I completly understand their displeasure with ride reductions! I'm glad someones on the side of the CM's, and maintenance crews as well. All stakeholders SHOULD have a say. However... without minimizing anyone elses comments there are in fact a lot of people on the financial bubble when it comes to DW trips. So what seems like an insignificant hit to some is in fact equalizing the value of staying off-property at Disney. Just saying I get what everyone is saying but no matter how you spin the complaints, critisism, and defense it still is a reduction in value and that hurts lots of people!

Okay makes a huge amount of sense! The lap-bars are the odd man out, I was wondering why this hadnt been done sooner if its a ride always in need of every down minute of extra care. Adding those last winter could be tipping the balance into reducing the EMH. Thanks!

I appreciate the added insight but curious if this is indefinitely or is there a finite time frame?

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Sad, but not the end of the world for me. Not sure how many midnight rides I was planning in November, anyway.
At least it's not going down for a refurb during my vacation.

Fingers still crossed that we hit the jackpot and get to experience FLE before the 19th.

Ya it's funny I'm a bellman at Loews royal pacific resort and when people ask me how is it to work for Loews I say "I don't work for Loews, I work for you".

Another excellent example of the kind of excellent service I received the last time I was at the Royal Pacific, and don't get from Disney, which is why I don't stay on Disney property anymore. As my Mom said during our last trip (and she is one of the original former pixie dust sniffers), "this is what staying at the polynesian *used* to be like."

I would stay at Royal Pacific over Poly given the current state of both. And Royal Pacific is half the price!
