Magic Drydock...why is the ship getting longer?

Per this post and the link provided within it... (thanks, @Bolna ;) )

...and some conversation regarding current Panamax limitations I've discovered another question. What is adding 20 feet in overall length to the Magic during her drydock? If I read it correctly, Panamax overall length includes protrusions above & below the waterline. Currently length, pre-refit, just does make it into the locks. So, while I don't believe anything is being done to the hull of the ship to lengthen it, it does appear that something is being done to change a protrusion that adds 20 feet to the length. What could/would that be???

Yes, it's for stability. :)

Or better fuel economy. I tend to think Mickey is thinking of his wallet a little more than he's thinking of some nauseated passengers. LOL! Either way, total WIN/WIN, right?! Plus, I'm a firm believer that a little more junk-in-the-trunk is a plus...biiiiiig plus....huuuuuuuuge PLUS! ((Shhhh...I'm still trying to convince myself...let me keep chanting the new mantra... LOL!))

I think this is one of the reason's for all the itenerary changes. DCL realized if the same renovations are done to the Wonder and they have no ships that can travel the Panama Canal , they may have problems, (no options for Alaska cruises)so they will cut back the Wonder renovations . This in turned lead to the moving the Wonder to Miami( keep your newer renovated Magic in PC which will have higher rates).

It won't be long before a longer ship can get thru the Panama Canal. The canal expansion is scheduled to complete in the next couple years. All Disney would need to do for the time being is leave the sponson off the aft until the project completes. Or hold off the schedule for the Wonder's dry dock until it works with the new Panamax guidelines.

They could also possibly put the Wonder into dry dock on the West Coast, so she could do Alaska and then she would have to stay there until the new locks are done. I think there is some huge number crunching being done to figure out what is the best: loose out on Alaska for one or two years or suffer through a winter on the West Coast where the Mexican Riviera cruises weren't sellin well.

I think if they did 3/4/5 Night Cruises and throw in a couple of Hawaii Cruises the West Coast could do quite well for them.

The first few Hawaiian cruises sold like wildfire! I don't think the last one did quite as well. I could be mistaken. The Hawaiian itinerary is so long because they still have to hit a foreign port. That's the problem with the West Coast sailings, too. Maybe they could do 8-nights and hit Victoria/Canada as their foreign port. ???

Well 8 Nights to Hawaii isn’t likely but yes they could easily do Victoria or even Ensenada, Mexico. I think if they did the Western Seashore like San Fran, San Diego, and then Ensenada it would do quite well.

This is exactly the itinerary they did last fall which did not sell well at all despite relatively affordable prices. That's why they turned these cruises into Pixar cruises.

Ouch… I guess thats why all four ships are in Florida… ey? I just don't get how Carnival is doing so well on their 3/4 night cruises and Disney can't whoop them. Carnival is doing so well they are moving a second ship their doing 3/4 nights and another doing 6-7 night cruises.

The duck tails will be showing up on many newer cruise ships. As stated all due to new stabile requirements form the international governing groups/ IMO.

I think it was a combination of a lot of things. For one, Disney cruises without Castaway Cay are a harder sell. People want to stop there when they are on a Disney cruise. Alaska and Med cruises sell great without Castaway Cay because it's all about those ports. They're amazing places to travel even without Castaway Cay.

The first few years of California cruises drew people because they were new. People on the West Coast were excited to try them and didn't mind paying the higher prices. After a while though, the excitement tempered. I think they may have saved themselves if they'd offered some shorter cruises as an option, but all they had were 7 night cruises in the middle of the school year. That's a tough market.

Tammy,

Didn't DCL offer 2 trips to Castaway Cay on their 7 day cruises? We looked at the book when we were on board the DREAM this past May to book our cruise next year and we didn't see any with 2 trips to Castaway Cay. They changed that? Days at sea are nice but 2 visits to CC during the same longer cruise would be great.

Thanks,

GMRO

I never recall or heard of a double stop to Castaway Cay on their 7 Day Cruises. I know on some upcoming 4/5 night cruises out of Port Canaveral their will be double Castaway Cay stops. The Dream is doing a few when they go from Sunday-Thursday, Thursday-Sunday cruises to Monday-Friday, Friday-Monday cruises in 2014.

Regardless of what the marketing says, Carnival is after the 20s/30s crowd, in particular for the 3 or 4 day cruises. It a demographic after sun and booze with little regard for where the ship goes. While adults with no kids cruise on DCL, they are focused on the families. Unless Carnival continues to get worse and blow up a ship while at sea they will keep the short weekend market and Disney won't be able to compete. Plus, there is a fairly large group who wont cruise on Disney because its "packed full of crying kids and its super expensive". I love the idea that was being discussed here not long ago... Two new Disney ships sized between the Magic/Wonder and Dream/Fantasy. One full time Alaska/West Coast ship, One full time Gulf of Mexico ship out of Houston, not Galveston, Two Florida ships, One New York/East Coast ship, and one ship for European trips. Crank up the marketing. Honestly, don't go where Carnival goes. Just leave that market alone.
