Maelstrom refurbished!

The job wasn't well done. Keeping mechanical things working and the rest of it looking sharp, while having pleasant staff run it...that's doing the job well.

Keeping it working to some degree is doing the job.

Letting it slide to the point where the whole loading area is moldy and smelly and other parts of the ride are developing mold...and leaving it in that disgusting condition for a year...that's a very poor job.

They didn't do the job well. They moved from doing a poor job to doing it.

When they do a job well, I am happy to cheer, as are most people.

Getting rid of mold that should never have been allowed to develop...not praise-worthy, IMO.

Have they dropped the temp in loading to prevent more mold or will more develop?

I agree with you on the part of mold. But you're overlooking other things. Should they have been let go? Of course not. But the fact they are fixed is a good thing. I'm not sure anyone is cheering. Improvements are made. That, last time I checked, is a good thing.

It is good that they are beginning to clean up (finally) the disgusting mess they allowed this ride to turn into, but it is not, IMO, commendable. We all have our opinions. That is mine.

Im glad they fixed it up. Considering how badly it effed me up when I rode in early May (allergies went absolutely nuts, I was ill for the rest of the day) but this really sounds like stuff that should have been taken care of when it first happened, and not months/years later.

However, it makes me hopeful that maybe... just maybe... the 'survey' I was asked to do (before this all happened) actually did some good when I detailed out what happened during and after this ride.

I feel like such a whiner. But this really ruined the whole day for me. :( I hope they maintain it now, for everyone elses sake, and keep up the maintanence plans.

So have they given up on the outside waterfall and just decided to not bother fixing it because it costs too much? I know there was a leaking problem inside which is why they took away the pavilions opening display on the left wall (as your walking into puffinsroost), but surely there is no reason this cant be fixed in this day and age, and by now. Its been walled off for several months already.

I know I probably were a bit to enthusiastic about this whole small refurb... But after spending severeal weeks on this forum reading about all the tragic state WDW is in, I had given up on this company and thought that nothing will ever be maintained and fixed like ever, especially not Maelstrom. When I found out that they changed a lot of small things and cleaned the ride a little with new fixtures, I was overly happy. I have sent an email to some of the Disney people Ive been in contact with to complain about the situation thanking them a lot.

As for the new storm effects, they are new, the old wave machine is not on full, they turned something on but not waves. There are new "cannons" that shoot water up on the oil rig and the mist effect is also new.
I can not believe the movie is still the some old , I do believe its been digitalized, because its SO much better now, the doors are also opening and closing now (not both doors, but one of them).

Yesterday the AC did not work, I heard they were doing some maintainance on it, but not sure.
They did remove the bright as hell light from the viking scene, but its been more bright "purple" lights so the scene is more visible, they also installed a new rune stone in the scene. The light on the viking man blowing the horn is also better. It seems like the "waves" on the departing ships is gone, atleast it was yesterday... :(

The trolls dont come up as fast as they use to do, so its more like a surprise. I hated to go in there and the trolls were already halfway up there...

I know this is how it should have been all the time, and its sad that they let it rot this much before anything was done, but this gives me hope and trust in the company again!

This board seems to lack hope as of late. It's always a good thing when something gets refurbed and actually fixed. More credit should be given.

They dont deserve that credit as of yet, check out the spectro news thread with all that depressing mess going on today about it being demolished thanks to TDO's stupidity. And since they arent doing anything with Maelstroms waterfall mess out front they dont exactly deserve kudos,,,but I guess the inside is a start in the right direction for maelstrom. But its still half baked.

As of this past Saturday, the walls are still unfortunately up outside:

Hopefully the effort to correct issues inside will find its it way out here as well.

That wall sure takes away a lot of the fun of the ride and the beauty of the pavilion but I'm hoping its a step towards progress even if its a slow one. I remember as a kiddo that Maelstrom was a really exciting ride for me. I was deathly afraid of roller coasters and dark rides were more my thing. The first time I rode Maelstrom and the trolls popped out, I loved it and when the ship flew backwards down over the falls I had a real moment of desperation if but for only a second. When we landed near the oil rigs I was all smiles and my addiction to the Norway pavilion began. I love the theming, the gift shops, the Krigla bakery, and I wear Geir very often :)

So they put up walls and scaffolding but are actually not doing anything at all and have kept it like that for months for no good reason? The hell... I sure hope they're doing work on something there. Can't imagine what they're doing that would take months and months to finish though.

If (big IF here) this is the sign of the current management attitude toward the parks, I welcome it. As many have said, this all would have been normal upkeep in the past. For the last decade+, however, it hasn't been.

So, with the attention to details like this, we should acknowledge it for what it is: a positive thing, and a step in the right direction. Lots more needs to be done, but like potty-training a puppy, you need to give positive reinforcement when the puppy does little things right, so that it has the encouragement to continue to do those little things right, and then bigger and bigger things.

Disney needs the positive reinforcement from fans like us when they do right like this.

I cannot agree more, I understand people are mad that things were let go but to be mad that other people are happy when things finally start to improve is a little overboard. What was the alternative? Do nothing and let the ride continue to rot? Should it have been addressed ages ago? yes. But it wasn't and now they are doing something if someone is happy that an attraction they held dear is going back to its standard then by all means let em smile and cheer.

It does kinda, its looked exactly like that above the wall for at least 3 months. I would think by now something would have shifted.

I agree it looks like nothing has been done, since the wall has remained up for a long time. But you can't make the assumption that no work has been completed in that period. Looking back at images from an earlier visit, it looks like the scrims and scaffolding behind the wall are more recent. So something has been done.

I'm not aware what the issue is, or why it is taking so long. Perhaps someone else has more information, and what work has been completed so far or what the delay is.

WDW is sort of like an old ship.....when you want the ship to turn, it takes a while before the turn starts to happen. I'm hoping that this is what's going on with the resort....it's starting to make its turn (when it comes to maintenance), but it will still be a while until it's really noticeable. Management has treated the resort like it's unsinkable, but we know what happens with that attitude. If the resort doesn't make the turn, like that big famous ship, it will hit that iceberg and be gone in a flash, taking it's loyal fan base with it.
