Maelstrom Audio Changes/Restoration

No music and or sound effects have been running in the first half of the ride, its just narration and the ride motors, dont know whats going on there.
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. I didn't notice any BGM until maybe the renaissance scene, and even after that, several spots of almost total silence (minus the ride vehicle noises.)

This is probably some sort of error, but inconsistent and low audio levels are something that seems to be a problem across WDW. Comparatively, everything at DLR and UOR sounds great, loud, and clear.

Audio across WDW attractions seems hit and miss. Mostly its concerned and informed CMs who try to get something done it seems. The stories from ToT can bring a tear to your eye.

Alot of this information is wrong!
- name of the movie: Spirit of Norway not Norway the film
- 4 rows not 5. They can take 15 passengers.
- some errors in the dialogs. Norways spirit has always been, will always be adventure.
Thanks for the clarification. Disney's official site does list it as The Spirit of Norway now, but the official press release when it opened referred to it as Norway-The Film. I've made that clarification as well.

As for the dialog, the audio is tough to make out but I had always known as what you said, "Norway's spirit has always been, will always be adventure." When you listen to it again it's very tough to discern what is actually said. I have yet to find a definitive answer one way or the other - if you have something to back this up, I will gladly adjust this as well.

Hey, done some research now and found some of the script from Maelstrom. Some articles from Norway did have the lines in them, and one of them say that it is "will always be adventure". Its hard to hear, but I feel like its right... (I do this ride atleast once a day if not more.)

As for the film its not mentioned by name anywhere in the papers Ive gone through, but one says that it follows the theme "spirit of Norway". Ill still call it the Spirit of Norway.

You are not the first to pass this way, nor shall you be the last. Those who seek the spirit of Norway face peril and adventure, but more often find beauty and charm.

We have always lived with the sea, so look first to the spirit of the seafearer.
Long ago, Norway was a land of vikings, that was the beginning of our love for the sea.

Viking woman: Er du viss på at Erik er voksen nok for denne ferden? (Are you sure Erik is ready for this voyage?)
Viking father: Ikke vær redd Frida, jeg skal ta meg av gutten. (Dont worry Frida, Ill take care of the boy.)
Viking boy: Far, er det sant at det finnes uhyrer i havet som kan sluke hele skip? (Father, is it true that there are monsters in the sea that can swallow whole ships?)
Viking father: Jeg har ikke sett noe slikt. (Ive never seen such a thing.)
Viking mother: Erik, husk på ryggsekken din. (Erik, dont forget your rucksack)
Viking workman in the boat: Frida, du maser så! (Frida, you fuss too much!)
- Theres also something about the first seatroll they see too, but my sources didnt provide all monologes.

MAELSTROM:

A Norwegian High Seas Adventure

The guests board miniature Viking Longships to travel through a cave full of ancient Norwegian Petroglyphs, where they are introduced to the Spirit of Norway. The spirit beckons them to follow and discover the true Norway.

YOU ARE NOT THE FIRST TO PASS THIS WAY..

Now as they stare into Odin’s Eye as the lights and haze start spinning around the guests quickly find themselves transported back into the time of the Vikings.

NOR SHALL YOU BE THE LAST…THOSE WHO SEEK THE SPIRIT OF NORWAY FACE PERIL AND ADVENTURE…BUT MORE OFTEN FIND BEAUTY AND CHARM..

WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED WITH THE SEA…SO LOOK FIRST TO THE SPIRIT OF THE SEAFARER..

As they enter the Viking Forest

LONG AGO, NORWAY WAS A LAND OF VIKINGS…THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF OUR LOVE FOR THE SEA.

Then they enter a Viking Village and they watch as a Viking Longship of ages past prepare for an adventurous voyage.

VIKING VILLAGE (TRANSLATED)

VIKING WOMAN:

Per..are you sure Eric is ready for this voyage?

VIKING FATHER:

Don’t worry, Freda, I’ll tend to the boy. I know how special a first sailing is.

VIKING BOY:

Father, is it true there are sea monsters who can swallow ships whole?

VIKING FATHER:

I’ve yet to meet the likes of one

VIKING WORKMAN ON GROUND:

I remember my first sea voyage…

VIKING WORKMAN IN BOAT:

And your first sea monster, no doubt

VIKING WOMAN:

Eric, don’t forget your rucksack

VIKING WORKMAN IN BOAT:

Freda, you fuss too much. It’s here by me. I’ll see it stowed before we put to sea.

As the mighty Viking Coastguardsman blows his horn, the spirit then warns of the Trolls, called the “Hulderfolk”, the hidden people of Norway.

THERE ARE THOSE WHO SEE NORWAY’S SPIRIT VEILED IN A LAND OF FORESTS AND MYSTERY; WHERE TROLLS STILL PROWL THE WATERS EDGE

The boats continue into a dark, foggy area where sinister shapes lurk in shadows around a still pool. Suddenly, the huge head of a River Troll rises from the water. A Three-Headed Troll appears from the shadows on the shoreline and casts troll magic over the boat.

TROLL COUNTRY

TROLL HEAD #1

WHAT’S THIS? HOW DARE YOU COME HERE?

TROLL HEAD #2

INVADERS!

TROLL HEAD #1

STOP! THIS IS TROLL COUNTRY!

TROLL HEAD #3

LOOK AWAY! BEGONE!

TROLL HEAD #1

I’LL CAST THE SPELL!

TROLL HEAD #3

YES! YES!

TROLL HEAD #1

YOU’LL DISAPPEAR!

TROLL HEAD #2

DISAPPEAR! DISAPPEAR!

TROLL HEAD #1

BACK! BACK! OVER THE FALLS! (LAUGHING)

This causes the small craft to swing in a different direction. The little boats move backward out of the swamp and down the first drop, free from the dangers of the hungry trolls.

BEFORE RECORDED TIME, NORWAY’S SPIRIT ROAMED THE SEAS OF THE FAR NORTH, AND BEYOND

It becomes cold and wintry, and artic wildlife, such as polar bears and puffins can be seen. The little ships escape a confrontation with a huge polar bear, then pick up speed as they enter raging rapids.

TODAY, NORWAY’S SPIRIT STILL THUNDERS IN HER GREAT FJORDS

The boats finally slow and move past the birch groves of a mighty fjord, then nearly topple backward over a roaring waterfall. At the last instant, however, they are diverted an ancient stone troll.

ROCK TROLL:

HMM…WHAT’S THIS? HOW DARE YOU COME THIS VAY! DOWN TO THE NORTH SEA WITH YOU! (LAUGHING)

The current swings the boats about and the grand vista of Geiranger Fjord, with its famous overhanging rock, is revealed for the first time.

The boats drift forward, passing beneath the rock, then plunge head down a second, even steeper drop than the first. Unexpectedly, they are cast into the fury of a raging gale ripping through the Norwegian North Sea. The boats are tossed and tipped by the force of the storm. Lightning flashes and thunder cracks the heavens open. A towering oil production platform stands strong and silent against the wind and sea. The little Longships move around it and the Spirit of Norway adds.

NORWAY’S SPIRIT HAS ALWAYS BEEN, WILL ALWAYS BE ADVENTURE

The boats then sail into a calm harbor located on the south coast of Norway. A small sailboat is moored at dockside.

The small boats land at the harbor’s dock and the guests walk from the boat to the center of the village.

A village storyteller begins entertaining the guests with tales of his native land. Silhouettes of the village people can be seen in the windows of their homes. Traces of local conversations can be overheard and the personality of Norway begins to emerge. When a dozen boats have arrived and guests disembarked, the finale of the show begins. Four doors located at the rear of the village open up to allow guests to pass through into a theater.

Thanks! That description is somewhat more interesting than the actual ride. And we have some missing components...

The ride used to be cutting edge, using a telsa coil for some serious lightning effects was amazing I heard, its shame that when I first rode it the condition it was in rotting and seriously toned down I remember waiting for this ride and thinking why is the que area in such a state of disrepair?

How long did they use the tesla coil on the oil rig?
I rode Maelstrom during its first year of operation, and as a kid I really loved it but I don't recall seeing "real" lightning.

They've been doing some work on Norway these past few months... The waterfall outside, the Painting of the Mold(TM) on the inside ceiling... So much left to do. The oil rig scene is lifeless these days and the screen is in horrible shape. The lift ramp is also very chattery.

They aren't seriously just painting over the mold, are they?

Please tell me they are getting rid of the mold, replacing the ceiling tiles and maintaining a temperature that is not mold-friendly.

Please.

They could be - but the tiles looked like they went from moldy white - to black - awfully quickly. And I believe not all at once. So that would mean that mold abatement was not performed before replacement... I didn't see the transformation first hand though, so I can't say for sure.

They could just put in black tiles. No one would ever know if they were moldy or not. :p

Black mold is dangerous stuff. It can cause all sorts of respiratory diseases, and exposure is not fun. I hope they removed it.

I've been in a few stores where we've found it, and we had to rip out the whole wall and replace it. Ceiling tiles are also bad about hosting it (which they have a lot of in the waiting queue...if it were me, I'd rip all that out). You can't just spray it with bleach and call it a day once it's taken root.

Yup, mold - like asbestos - must be removed properly. Bleaching or painting over it won't help. This was clearly a quick fix as the ride never closed down for refurb (which it would have if true abatement were done).

I believe the telsa coil has been there since the ride opened, the opening ads for the ride mentioned the use of "Real" lightning as part of the draw.
