I don't ever recall Tesla style lightning at Maelstrom...

http://www.mouseplanet.com/7133/Walt_Disney_Worlds_Maelstrom_Part_3

This seems to indicate they considered it, but dropped it due to safety concerns.

Where did those pictures come from? Any video of it in action?

Yeah their was a tesla coil in the attraction back in the day, like I said it was in the imagineering book but they later gutted it out of the attraction and had that whole scene toned down. http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/maelstrom.32812/ @marni1971 even confirmed it and they have pretty good credibilty on this site. A common misconception I have been seeing around the internet is that the Imagineers scrapped it and never put it in the ride in the first place which just isn't true! Theres is a video mentioning the lightning done by Martin at the end of it shows a video of the tesla coil in action. around the 25 minute mark or so.

Thanks for that. I just spent 30 minutes of my life! <grin> But, never mind that for one of Martin's vids.

I was there in the late 80s, but I guess too young to remember or identify that it was a Tesla coil effect. I do remember the ride being wetter and foggier than it is now...I miss that. It was one of my favorite rides at EPCOT (aside from Imagination and Horizons)...

You could have fast forward to the 25 minute mark! lol But he has a great library of vids and goes into awesome detail I love his site. Unfortunately I never got to see this ride in its prime only in the state that its in now :/ same for horizons or imagination.

Nah, I couldn't. I've been watching Martin's vids for years, long before I knew his affiliation with this site (I was on other forums).

But, it was a Martin vid that I hadn't seen! I did skip through some of the pavilion walkaround video though...

It's interesting to me that the bathrooms that are my current favorite bathrooms at EPCOT...were the original pavilion! <grin>

I didn't even know that the oil rig scene was supposed to be a severe storm. With the way the scene is now, its calm and serene.

As we all know, mold loves warm, damp environments...like Maelstrom's loading area...and most of central Florida, if there isn't sufficient air conditioning.

I've often said how much I like that ride. Don't want to see it shut down. But, if it needs mold remediation, that's what it needs. Bite the bullet. Fix the problems. Have a lovely Maelstrom and crank the air.

On a recent ride, I can't say for certain, but the audio did sound better overall. Also, I think the lighting may have been worked on - the sets themselves seemed brighter and it was harder to see the non-themed stuff like the black walls or tell that the rockwork is just cutouts.
