MAC vs. PC....Please Help!

OK. My hard drive decided to crash on me yesterday. AAGGHHH!! (I am currently using an old backup laptop.) Anyway, I have been leaning towards buying a Mac and would like your advice. All of my computers have been Dells with the exception of one of DH's laptops which is a Sony Viao. I am fed up with Dell. Nothing but problems. I can also never get any support. They have been awful.

What I have been thinking about doing is getting a Mac Mini for the time being and then in about 6 months or so, getting a Mac Book Pro.

Please help! I would like to know what your experiences are. All I hear are great things about Macs and want to know if it is worth it. (DH is bent on getting the Mac, but I want to hear your advice!!!)

I thank you all for your help!

BTW, I don't do any number crunching or gaming. I mostly use the computer for the net, iTunes and my photos. That is why I am leaning towards a MAC.

If you are just the standard internet/email/itunes user then you will be fine with pretty much any computer you buy. Mac's tend to be a little more user-friendly but are by no means the problem free, bullet proof computers that the commercials make them out to be. They have problems and break just like any other computer and from the limited amount of experience tend to be more expensive to buy and repair compared to their PC counterparts. One good thing I have found is their customer service is excellent unlike Dell.

I have always been a Dell guy...

My last computer, however, was the 20" iMAC.

I absolutely love this thing. I've had it since last Christmas and not once had to reboot the machine without me wanting to. It does have a few glitches but I haven't run into one that forces me to reboot in order to resolve. If a program isn't working, it doesn't screw up your entire operating system and lock it up...you simply shut down that program and keep on working.

It may be a little pricier than a Dell...but I gotta tell you...if you have a question, walk into any Apple Store and the people there will answer it for you. They are so knowledgable about the products they sell and they are a TON more helpful than Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.

I haven't had to call for any technical help (actually, I haven't needed any technical help at all) so I can't tell you how their call-up help is.

I will say that there is a place for both...the PC and the Mac...but for home-use...I wouldn't tell anybody to buy a PC anymore.

Get the MacBook Pro, you won't go back. If all else fails, you can install boot camp and install windows on another partition if you need to use it for one or two apps.

I'm currently using a MacBook Pro (after years of frustrating PCs), and am LOVING IT.

Macs are the way to go.

Well, it all boils down to this, do you want to be a trendy hipster kid in a designer hoodie, or a chubby middle-aged guy with glasses?

That's not really a good analogy...

Yes, I see where you are going as far as looks go...but don't forget that your trendy hipster kid in a designer hoodie has all the mental capacity and experience as your chubby middle-aged guy with glasses

:D

A trendy Doogie Howser...or Quincy

Dell has gone down hill as of late. HP notebooks are slightly more reliable and macs are only more reliable because there are less of them out there. HD failure is just as common in them as any other computer company. If you want to learn a new OS go with the mac but don't expect it to change your life.

And Bruce Willis too!

Glad you finally got the joke WDWFreak :)

However, we shouldn't discount that the PC gets to be on the Daily Show with John Stewart several times a week, and that ain't not half bad!
