So we should reward the general audience for their stupidity?
Run a business selling what you believe to be high quality goods/services, but sell poorly.

Then discover your customers would rather make you rich by buying low brow goods/services.

Will you discontinue the low brow stuff and be poor out of artistic principle? If you say yes, congratulations, your Board of Directors just fired you.

In truth, it’s execs within the studio’s willfull ignorance, exploitation & neglect. They know they can offer better and that better will Infact sell more & have a more positive influence, but they deliberately choose not to out of their own nonsensical mindset/dumb choice and because they know they can get away with it. Ridiculous. Hoping they won’t be able to sooner than later

So, yeah. Reward people for their stupidity.

As they say in The Lorax, business is business, and business must grow, regardless of crummies in tummies, you know.

Do you know any corporation on the planet that would not take the "easy" cash (as if any cash is actually easy) their consumers are willing to give?

All studio heads are risk adverse as much as possible… they all go with the less risky as much as possible…. I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen great original stories in the theater that flop…. If people want more original content then show it with your wallet… but people rarely do

Yeah, it's all about remakes and reboots and sequels these days. Though, I imagine it's hard to tell how well an original live action movie would do in theaters nowadays when we get so few of them.

Disney used to be successful by giving us things that we didn't know we wanted.

Also, I like how nobody is arguing that the general public is stupid for flocking to the live action remakes.

Well good thing that Disney is releasing two new original movies this year in Hoppers and Hexed.

Well, here's hoping they're successful!

But I think we're talking more about live action movies. What was Disney's most recent non-Marvel non-Star Wars live action movie that wasn't a remake? Or an adaptation at all, for that matter?

Well first Disney has never put out anything that was wholly original and not an adaption of something. Everything comes from something else, whether directly adapted or inspired by something like books, plays, music, TV, etc.

Second it depends on what "Disney" you're talking about. Because Disney has many brands. So through their Searchlight brand releases 6-12 original movies a year, all live action. 20th Century release multiple original movies a year, all live action. WDAS released Encanto at the end of 2021, Wish at the end of 2023, and as mentioned Hexed at the end of this year, so an original every other year. Pixar releases many original, Luca 2021, Elemental 2023, and Hoppers this year in 2026, also about every other year is releasing an original.

So Disney is releasing plenty of original stuff, whether you personally enjoy the originals being released is another matter.

I believe Disney is producing more “original” animated films as a function of volume (not percentage) this decade than any other time in the companies history, except for the 2000’s. Which wasn’t exactly seen fondly aside from Pixar. Pixar swung back to less sequels this decade than last, even if Disney Animated backslid.

Disney live action has always been pretty questionably awful by comparison for output that is actually good. Hat tip to @MisterPenguin ’s long running complaint about that arm.

If given the choice, would merchandise of the original Lilo & Stitch sell more or the remake? Now, I don’t have data in front of me (I’d actually love to see some if anyone does), but I have a hunch merch of the original would sell more.

Stitch merch sold 2.6B in 2024 and 4B in 2025. I don’t think there is any significant delineation between live action and animated merch, because his 2D and 3D modeling has always been treated roughly as one. But he’s become hyper popular the last few years and the live action movie certainly helped further.

Clearly they made the right call with managing Stitch as a brand. Even if some of their other IP have been erratic.

They made the right call in making more merch, sure. And yes, the advertising & marketing of the remake’s theatrical release and the merchandise push in general helped further bring awareness of Stitch as a character/brand. There’s absolutely no denying that. But I wish we could see a split data sheet that shows the sales numbers of specific versions of the character/film. I wanna see which one sells more. Don’t care if the results don’t fit with my personal views, I’d accept either result as-is, it’s simply the reality, I’m just curious to find out which one is selling more.
