Donating blood is definitely a good thing....

and it's something that perhaps we should do together... I mean, we're a community. I know some of you are leery of meeting internet strangers, but I know others, like me, have met plenty of others.

So why don't we get set up into regions and try to set a time/date to go as a group and donate blood together?

Just a thought.

I'd be more than willing to help with it, but not so willing with the giving blood. I'm deathly afraid of needles, from all my medical problems in the past (which might not let me give blood anyways).

If something get's set up here in the Orlando area, let me know!

Excellent idea there Rob, and hopefully others around the US join in.

I'm deathly afraid of needles too... but for a good cause, I would temporarily 'get over it.' However, sadly, I'm forbidden from donating blood. *sigh*

Awesome idea Rob. I'm down if there is a group in So Cal getting together! (or if you Orlando folks can plan something next Tuesday when I pass through :))

Donating blood is a very vital part of any disaster recovery effort. It is even important when there is not a disaster. Blood supplies have been depleted for some time now. I encourage anyone who is physically able to donate if they can. I try to donate as often as I can. There is always some organization setting up blood drives around the Indiana area. I have donated several times for Heartland Blood Centers.

For those afraid of needles.....if you can talk yourself into donating just once, you will see that you don't really feel any pain when you get stuck with the needle....only a momentary pinch. The staff that work for these companies are very good at what they do and are well skilled. Give it a try if you can.

P.S. Blood centers are always calling me because I have Type O blood and it can be used for anybody (It's the Universal Donor blood type).

No can do:
*Probably too young
*Needles scare me
*Regretfully, I am rather squimish- blood is a gruesome topic for me. I've had to leave health class once or twice to go lie down because I felt so sick. :lookaroun
*I have to go for a cholestrol (<--sp??) check, and am delaying that as long as possible.

Sorry to thread drift, but I had my cholesterol checked and the blood test didn't hurt a bit. I turned my head and didn't watch and by the time I looked over again (expecting the worst) she was opening the Band-Aid to put over the cotton ball and it was over. I didn't even feel the needle stick me. So, if that helps you at all...And go get that cholesterol checked!! Even if you're young, it's a good thing to know so you can control or fix a potential problem now-you'll be glad you did!!

Okay. Please drift back now. Rob-great thought. I'd be up for it here in Indy, if anyone else is.

Great idea Rob! This would be an excellent way for those who are unable for whatever reason to donate money to the Red Cross to help out too. I think we all need to do whatever we can to help.

Alrighty... I'm taking a sick day from work this Tuesday, to go donate blood and attend the Hurricane relief concert at the Hard Rock Live. If anyone is in Orlando, whether as a tourist or local, and is able and willing to donate blood, PM me or email me.... or at this point, I don't care who has my number, Call me at 321-251-6358 (020-7993-4691 if any brits are in Orlando with a UK mobile), and I'm willing to pick up anyone who is willing and able but has no ride.

This is serious, and is a good idea.

I have been giving blood for 30 years now. I am up to 93 pints in the 20 years we have lived in KC. (with breaks for 3 pregnancies)

I too have O Negative blood and am negative for CMV antibodies--my blood always goes to babies. Needless to say, I get frequent calls from the blood center.

Generally speaking, males are FAR more squemish about blood--I suspect you can figure out why...

The funniest thing that ever happened to me at the blood center was when a group of frat pledges came to give. These guys were HUGE--all of them over 6 feet and 200 pounds. They were dropping like flies. Here I was, 40 years old and just over 5 feet and just fine.

The best thing that happened when I was giving blood was a sign on the ceiling that said:
Be grateful that you are healthy enough to give blood today.

Something for all of us to think about.......

EDIT: I am eligible again October 6

Oooooookay... I'll do it. :) It's been a while... last time I donated, I came home and fell asleep for 3 hours

And "afraid of needles"... it doesn't hurt. I swear to you for everything I have. :) Stubbing your toe is more painful. Promise!!

Plus, cookies and juice!!

I am not able to donate blood, but thanks to everyone that does! I wish I could, especially since I'm not afraid of needle!

It's not the needle part that freaks me out... I have no problem with needles. But every time I've given blood... I nearly pass out and am sick for the whole day. It's not a pretty sight... so I've had to stop.

Trust me... if I would I could.

You must be 17 years old and at least 110 pounds to donate.

Once you donate, you will be given some sort of card with your type on it.

Our blood center also does a cholesterol test on each donation and sends your results. (it's only total chol--not an HDL/LDL breakdown)

Giving blood is a mini-health screening--you learn your blood pressure, resting pulse, and cholesterol.

Take your fingernails and pinch a tiny piece of skin in the crook of your arm. Can you tolerate that?
Then you can tolerate a blood donation needle.

For those of you who have a problem with blood, you could donate, or you can pay a therapist a boatload of money for phobia therapy.....
