First, and unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast in baseball today. It's not fair, but until they change the rules, that's the way it's going to come down. Since it is the rules, Steinbrenner has done nothing illegal in the way he puts together a team. Baseball seriously needs a salary cap. Until the players agree to this, then I don't think they--the players--are too upset about NY getting the rings every October. Second, how many WS have they won? 23? And how many had they won before Steinbrenner bought the team in 1974 were bought? I would imagine zero.

Scott That is the problem, there is a salary cap in baseball and every year the yankees owner is sanctioned for going over the salary cap, but the penalty is so light that That the yankees owner doesn`t care, cause he knows he`ll make it back 20 times fold!
and that`s why The cleveland Indians Suck so badly because our owner is so worried as to not go over the cap.

No, there is no salary cap in baseball--there is a luxury tax. A cap means you cannot surpass the amount, the tax means you can surpass it with a penalty. Big difference. If they cap teams at $100 million and you re-sign, for instance, Jeter at $15 million per, you've taken a chunk of change out of your budget. If they simply tax it, then you pay the tax and go on. The players do not want a salary cap because they know it will keep down their salaries and that is the bottom line in baseball.

Your not starting off to a good start here!
I`m not a yankees fan either, but I can`t condone any violent actions, specially to an elderly guy!

It's my understanding that the luxury tax implemented by MLB isn't as effective in keeping teams who overspend, like the Yankees, from signing all the upper-level talent. Unlike the salary cap/luxury tax used in the NBA, where the penalty is 1:1 per $ spent over the limit, MLB only penalizes teams on a 10% ratio. So lets say if Mr. Steinbrenner over spends on the team salary by $10mil, his penalty is "only" $1M. Which is a minor surcharge to pay for a quality player he could get for that $10M.

I gathered this info from a friend who seems to understand the business aspect of MLB fairly well.

Coming from a hockey market where we are often called the 'Yankees of Hockey', I just have this to say:

Instead of getting on a team, or their fans for 'buying championships' - get on the leagues that let it happen.

I will agree that the level of these contracts is ridiculous, but the general managers are obligated to build the best team they can for what their markets will bear.

In New York, the Yankees have a huge market and tons of money to throw around. In Detroit, it's the same thing with hockey.

Next year, the NHL is most likely going to step in and correct some of these problems, and in my opinion the same thing should happen with baseball.

You can't blame the teams for 'buying' a champonship when the league allows and encourages it. Blame the leagues and their commisioners for making the games more about money than the sportsmanship!!! Not the teams or their fans :)

Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox were fined Sunday along with Don Zimmer and Karim Garcia of the New York Yankees for their actions in Game 3 of the AL championship series.

Bob Watson, baseball’s vice president in charge of discipline, did not announce specifically why the four were fined, other than to say it was for their behavior in the fourth inning of New York’s 4-3 victory Saturday. The amounts of the fines were not disclosed

We all need a night off.

you are so right. Its a shame that MLB hasn't stepped in yet and done something about the salary of these players, and the nerve of them every 4 yrs or so to start crying "we want more or were going to strike" Thats the biggest reason i haven't gotten back into baseball like i was. Before the last strike id watch a couple of games a week. Now i barely turn it on. Its a joke, the highest paid players in any sport and they keep crying "more more more". I'm done complaining for now. lol

Fine amounts: Martinez was fined $50,000, Ramirez $25,000, Garcia $10,000 and Zimmer $5,000, according to a baseball executive who spoke on the condition he not be identified.

Saw that late last night. Also read this morning that no arrests to be made in bullpen incident, but summons may be issued.

One more blackeye for baseball.:(

Maybe I should take up another sport.
