Let Them Eat CAKE!!! Trip Report

****Looks like none of the pictures are showing after the site changeover- you can view the pics on here if you'd like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/sets/72157630140601410/

I posted the PTR a while back... http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=762372 and now it's time for the trip report!!!

As you probably guessed from the title- there's going to be a bit of cake in this TR. The first cake actually happens before we even left town for WDW. As promised, I made Kendall (DD4 at the time) a Toy Story themed Barbie Dreamvette. I was under a lot of stress- final trip details, getting ready for Kindergarten, family staying with us for 4 days before the trip, work issues, everything with this cake, and a car accident in the middle of it all. The gumpaste Mr. Potatohead and Alien turned out really well... even if I had to replace the 5 with a hat due to a potato mishap...

[/IMG]
6023942738_4c28f88df4.jpg
[/IMG]

...but the cake looked more like a lumpy version of Lightning McQueen meets a Trans Am or Firebird.
6033438305_783d3e5723.jpg
[/IMG]

The worst part- I was already upset about the cake, but in the 5 hours I was away from the house- the weight of the Alien took out the far side of the car, the seams at the door and detail lines started to split, and potato fell and lost his 5. I made some last minute attempts to fix it airbrushed it a bit in hopes that people wouldn't notice all of the issues and said “who cares, I'm leaving for Disney tomorrow!”

6033442735_13766f6b2b.jpg
[/IMG] (still drives me nuts that after 3 fixes that stupid back tire still kept going flat!!!) All in all- I hated the cake and was so happy to come home and trash it! I haven't hated a cake this much in a long time.

So, now it's the evening before we take off for WDW and the vehicle situation is still up in the air. I hadn't heard back from the collision center by 7pm, so I figured my Jeep wouldn't be ready. So, we started prepping DH's car and I put in a stroller rental request through Magic Strollers. Around 9:20pm I get a call from the service rep handling my vehicle informing me that the Jeep should be ready by 8:30am the next morning. It did end up being ready the next morning, but by this point plans were in full swing for using DH's car plus he gets better gas mileage, so I picked up the Jeep- loaded up DH's car (after he took our dog to “Doggy Camp” and got an oil change)...AND WE WERE OFF TO DISNEY!!!

Sammie (DD2) was all happy, but Kendall wanted nothing to do with pictures!

We didn't leave until about 9:30am, but that worked out well since we hit downtown Houston with very little traffic.

It wasn't long after that where we got on I-10 and headed east.

We hit Beaumont and started to get excited because that meant it wouldn't be long before we were out of Texas and in Louisiana.

And the minute you enter Louisiana, you start seeing signs for things like Boudin and Cracklins... although not as funny as the Zatarain's sign that says “As seen on Okra.”

We stopped in Lake Charles, LA for lunch. DH decided to do a scenic drive around the city before settling on a place that wound up being closed for renovations (we wound up at the biggest Wendy's I've ever seen)...which wasted all of our recreational time for the day. So, we waved good bye to the Isle of Capri and L'auberge du Lac in our rear view and kept heading east.

The LA drive is pretty dull until you hit the Atchafalaya. While the area does make me think of that show Swamp People (I guess that is where it's filmed), I think back to my first few times across when my dad drilled it into my head to watch out for trucks and make sure my gas tank is full before crossing (DH thinks this is nuts). Either way- it's a pretty place to drive through.

Towards the end of the area is Grosse Tete and we always stop to see if the Tiger is out. I haven't seen him in a while and today was no different. The girls were pretty disappointed to miss Tony. Oh well- it was a good place to stop for the bathroom.

It was now my turn to drive...so you miss all of Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River on our way east. It never fails- I always hit Baton Rouge when there's ugly traffic. IT didn't help that DH gave the whole “don't wreck” speech before I took the wheel. Oh well- back to ugly traffic...This time it started at the base of the bridge and continued for miles after. It was HIGHLY disconcerting to feel the bridge shake while I just sat there. Once past the traffic and onto the New Orleans bypass on I-12 (those frozens were calling my name, but Bourbon Street is not a place I'll take the kids) my contacts started to bother me... and then my right one floated. I drove for a few miles half blind before I could exit. We parked at a lovely establishment called the Whiskey Bin only to find out my right contact had ripped. It was at that moment that I was very thankful I had my glasses handy and packed a spare set of lenses in one of the bags.

I kept driving and thankfully now both of the kids had fallen asleep. Of course Kendall wanted to be awake to see us cross into the next state, but I was happy she napped. As we neared Biloxi, my nose started to feel funny. I figured it was from the a/c in the car, but we needed a break and some gas so we pulled off. Of course this also meant waking the girls. When we got into the bathroom, I had a horrific nose bleed. I swear the place looked like a crime scene before I cleaned it up.

DH took over driving after this because my nose was still not 100%...so I snapped a few pics around Biloxi... including a billboard to our lodging for our return trip.

Our lodging for the night was on the other side of the bay in Daphne, AL. It was a Microtel- nothing overly exciting, but it was clean (minus one issue) and fairly nice (I think it's a Wyndham owned chain) plus there were lots of dining options nearby. We wound up eating dinner down the street at a place called Bimini Bob's. I left my camera in the room, but the sauteed crab fingers and my crawfish (even out of season) were good plus the place had really nice views. Then it was back to the hotel to rest up for day 2 of driving.

(*hopefully more tomorrow night after I get the kids in bed*)

Awwww...sorry your Barbie Vette didn't materialize as your mind's eye saw it. You know, if you have moist, delicious cake it tends to do that so my bet is it might not have looked perfect but it tasted fantastic! Honestly, I've been more mortified when a cake turned out dry but pretty than when I had a cake turn out moist but not-so-pretty.

Road trip! Yaaaaayyy!!!

Did ya wave when you passed thru Beaumont?! The "downtown" pics (<--isn't that hillarious?!)) is where DH's office is. Big plug for the Richard Design Services crew....

First of all, the stretch from the Louisiana state line to Lafayette is completely miserably dull. On one of my many trips to/from Pensacola I was coming down with the flu and I was driving alone. I made Tracey stay on the phone and talk to me for that whole stretch because I was scared to death I would fall asleep. At one point I was crying just begging to be done so I could go to bed. So pitiful!

What do I see?! Tsk tsk tsk. Big trucks are not allowed in the left lanes on the Atchafalaya Basin bridge. They can't drive as fast as us passenger cars either. The basin sure is beautiful, tho. I do believe part of the Swamp People show is filmed there. They film all over, tho.

Grosse Tete....heeheehee....be glad you have girls, my dear. My boys call it Gross (slang word for female anatomy part that starts with a T). We can never pass thru there without one of them chuckling, saying it, then asking "I wonder what's wrong with it? I'll look." More giggling. Ugh. Boys.

Baton Rouge...yep...that's always the big hurdle for any trip east. We always time our departure so we don't hit the BR traffic. It can spontaneously back up, tho. We're leaving here at like 2 a.m. so we can get thru there by 6-ish on a Friday. After Katrina so many people left NO & moved to BR. Their population literally exploded overnight. They're still trying to cope with that and get the roads widened out. I've sat on top of the river bridge at a standstill before, too. Then when the big trucks zip by on the other side it's just like you said, the whole bridge is bouncing. Scared the bejeezus outta me. That was another day I called Tracey cryin'-n-cursin' about how I didn't want to fall to my death when that stupid bridge collapsed. What a drama queen I am. LOL!

**sigh** Mobile. Your downtown pic isn't too terribly far from my sis-in-law's house. Did the girls try to hold their breath thru the tunnel??? The boys have been trying their whole lives but never can quite make it. I suppose we could help 'em out and drive faster. LOL!

Cool! Y'all stayed on the Eastern Shore!

Can't wait to see how the rest of the road trip went!

Hey, those cakes didn't look so bad to me! I would've eaten them anyway, personally. :D

Sorry you had sort of a tough drive...a ripped contact AND a nosebleed. Yikes!

And I'll echo what everyone else has said...your girls are adorable!

Baton Rouge traffic is that way 20 hrs per day. It can be worse when coming from the east. My office overlooks the mess. PM me on the way back & I'll tell you how it looks & if alternatives exist.

Love the title and the cakes! Looking forward to more.

Thanks! There's lots more cake to come as well. I've been trying to read your report- looks great so far...I just keep hearing "MOOOMMMMYY!!!" Oh well, comes with the territory.

your daughters are precious and you have some talent there with those cakes....AWESOME! can't wait to read more!

Thank you! The cakes are usually fun...just these summer cakes tend to give me issues. I should be much happier come November when I'm making Sammie's Dr Porkchop cake.

You bring up a really good point- the cake tasted amazing! I had to stop snacking on it in those last 12 hrs- even with all of it's blueberry cheesecakey goodness:slurp:- I had to keep reminding myself of how much eating we'd be doing on vacay.

We did think of you as we passed through Beaumont. :D

Funny- that portion of the LA drive gets me every time. DH and I usually drive to New Orleans once a year...a few times we've driven separately and I've had to pull off before that part to make sure I'm in a really lively mix on the ipod.

DH and I probably make the same Grosse Tete joke your boys make.

I have never been able to figure out the Baton Rouge traffic. Every now and then it's fine. In fact, on the road home we breezed through there...but the construction around the bridge killed us on the drive east. I think we hit that area somewhere between 2 and 3 pm and it was still that way. Oh well- Houston traffic is usually a bear so I can't whine too much. Still- that bridge is a nightmare. I too was wondering if we'd be a news headline with each little shake and bounce.

The girls were too excited to do any breath holding. Kendall just kept going on about how she was underwater and that she didn't need to swim...silly girl! The area is just so pretty...at some point, maybe we'll rent an RV and do a really long road trip so we can fully appreciate some of these nice stops along the way.

It might take me a month, but I promise to get this entire road trip posted!

Yay, Good to see you on your waY!!

Thanks! Lots more to come!!!

Love the TR! Your girls are so freaking cute! :D

Thanks! And hopefully if I can get the YouTube stuff done properly, everyone can hear them too! ...crazy little things that they are.

Count me in for this TR!

Your girls are adorable... We've made the trek to WDW from Maine before... 24 long hours!!! Traffic in NYC, DC... Ahhhhh!!! Can't wait to read the rest!! :)

THanks!!!

I used to drive northern NJ to WDW as a kid...we thankfully avoided the NYC area, but that drive through DC can be BRUTAL! Lots more to come!

Hey, those cakes didn't look so bad to me! I would've eaten them anyway, personally. :D

Sorry you had sort of a tough drive...a ripped contact AND a nosebleed. Yikes!

And I'll echo what everyone else has said...your girls are adorable!

Thanks! I think I just had this image of the cake in my mind and it didn't quite fit that image. Oh well- it tasted super yummy...and I opted to not take off from work so I had more vacay time at WDW- which I don't regret one bit! :)

It was a rough day, but it's not the worst road trip I've ever had...that is reserved for the trip where my alternater died in South Carolina in the middle of the night!

Definitely more pics of the kiddos to come as well! Especially since I'm the one behind the camera most of the time.

Baton Rouge traffic is that way 20 hrs per day. It can be worse when coming from the east. My office overlooks the mess. PM me on the way back & I'll tell you how it looks & if alternatives exist.

Thanks! We're actually home now, but I totally appreciate the offer. Funny- but we hit no traffic heading west on the way back. Oh well- I should be used to it with the crazy Houston traffic. Thanks again!

We woke up early the next day hoping we'd get a decent start on the road. Unfortunately, the girls loved the chaise bench (or lounge, or whatever it's supposed to be) along the window so much that we had a tough time getting them out.

I know most people on their way to WDW cheer when they get into FL, but I knew we had a lot of territory to cover and after living in Gainesville, FL for 6 years...I usually wait to celebrate until I'm getting onto the FL Turnpike...just a little tradition I developed during college when driving from Gainesville to MCO to head back up to Syracuse.

We were hoping to stop at the USS Alabama and/or the Pensacola Naval Air Museum, but our “tour” of Lake Charles, LA the previous day made it clear that we really couldn't stop too much more than an hour to stay on track. We already had plans to stop in Gainesville, FL that day so the pics of the USS Alabama from the day before and these pics from Pensacola would have to do.

OK- I'll spare you all of my crazy picture taking.

The drive between Pensacola and Tallahassee is pretty dull. We stopped at a rest area and let the girls run around a bit just to blow off some steam, but we really needed to motor to a place where we could get some lunch. My brother called right about the time as we were crossing the time zone change line so we missed that pic. What's really funny (aside from him asking if I felt an hour older)- he and my parents warned us that there were no places to eat in Tallahassee...yet, the first exit we hit had a Denny's right there. So, Denny's for lunch it was.

It was my turn to drive and I made it onto I-75 and into Gainesville not too long after that. My dad took a job in Gainesville in the early 90s and after a year of him commuting to and from NJ – we all moved to Gainesville 6 days after I graduated from High School. While I went to college up north, I spent my summers and breaks in G'ville and ultimately lived there for 6 years. So, we drove by the old house, my old job, and took the kids through University of Florida (brother and SIL are Gators). And after that drive down memory lane it was back on the road towards WDW.

***OK- time to get some dinner on the table, but as soon as I can get the little girlies fed, I'm going to get everything posted with us heading into Orlando...and hopefully the video of us surprising the girls. Thanks for reading!

(Sams + some of my headrest!)

As I noted before- I flew in and out of Orlando a lot in college and it always felt like such a long drive, but this time it felt like things were just flying by...first Micanopy, then Ocala and next thing you know- we're ready to get on the FL Turnpike. The girls fell asleep on the Turnpike, but sadly Kendall woke up as we were getting onto I4. I tried to bite my tongue since I was pretty excited to see Hogwarts, but she saw the Harry Potter billboards and got suspicious. Mind you, Kendall constantly tells us Justin Bieber is her boyfriend, but she's marrying Harry...even referred to him as her Prince Charming as we passed the billboards...but it still worried me. I tried to brush it off and change the subject when the billboards prompted her to say there should be Disney here too. The worst- as we passed DTD and I saw the Casting building with all of the mouse ears. I really wanted to take pictures, but that would draw too much attention...so I got nervous and giddy at the same time while diverting her attention to the other side of the road. Of course she also was insisting she knew the surprise and DH believed she'd figured it out- so that was also weighing on my mind.

After some traffic and this glorious sign that she couldn't read...
6061811009_1da325bea0.jpg
[/IMG]
(Of course we wouldn't be driving onto the WDW grounds until the next morning...so this was all just really killin' me!!!)

We exited onto Irlo Bronson, let all of that distract Kendall and found our lodging for the night. It was a Super 8 Motel about 3 miles from the Maingate and while it was only about $42 a nt after tax, they'd recently updated the rooms- so it felt a bit nicer than the price. It really was no place overly special, but they had free wifi, a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning (that we did not do), plus it was quiet and relatively clean.

After settling in a bit we went in search of dinner. We wound up going to Pacino's on Irlo Bronson across from Old Town. The food was very average, but the restaurant was pretty and it was nice to rest. At least Old Town caught the girls' attention and helped with the lie. I was just praying that with them being so cranky that our server didn't say anything like “rough day at Disney” and destroy the surprise when we were so close. Our server in Alabama almost did, but as soon as he was keen to our plans- he skirted the subject of our destination. Thankfully, our server at Pacino's didn't say a thing- I guess they're used to it and figure families could have spent their day just about anywhere. After dinner we headed back to the motel, got the kids in bed, and I was officially in “I'm too excited to sleep” mode!!! In fact, I even posted on here a bit that night to try and let out some of this crazy - nervous- excited WDW energy!

So, now on to the BIG DAY...

I really didn't sleep well...gee, imagine that. At this point I was running on pure excitement and adrenalin. When that alarm went off just before 6am ET I was up and ready to get there. We'd been just a couple of miles from the entrance to WDW for close to 12 hours now and it was killing me. The girls were at least excited enough to find out their surprise that they fully cooperated. We checked out and were on the road just before 7am...at least this was a very short drive.

The video below pretty much says it all...so, please watch if you want to see the big surprise unfold.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48jiiE_jjfU&feature=related
(sorry, I haven't quite figured out how to post it so you can see a pic of the video that plays on here)

I was about 1/2 of a second off with starting the Welcome Medley. I knew it the second we passed the first light on the overpass, but there was nothing I could do. I still can't believe Kendall said we're at Disney “AGAIN,” but the girls truly were excited to be there. I just wish I knew how she immediately knew we were having breakfast with Pooh...of course, according to her, we'd just eaten there "yesterday.":ROFLOL:

We also taped a little bit of our drive up to the Contemporary....pardon DH's cracked windshield!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTFNWM7RKbw&feature=related

All in all- I think the girls were fully surprised and truly happy...and now we're in trouble b/c they know we can fly OR drive to WDW!

***I'll have more after bed time***

We drove up to the guard and he remarked how early we were, but we explained the whole thing and were let right in. DH entertained the girls with the movies in the lobby while I checked in. We had a small heart attack because the system was showing my trip as canceled. It turned out that was the old trip before I rebooked it as a package. I forgot that the system decided to rebook the trip under DH's name. It all worked out and by 7:20am we were fully checked in...in fact, not only was our rental stroller in bell services our room was ready- I wonder how often that happens with a super early check in???- and it was on the ground floor as requested. Of course we were heading straight to the park, but this meant we could come back for nap time whenever we wanted. She also gave us lots of pins...2 birthday, 2 I'm celebrating, and 1 Happily Ever After...odd, but what the heck!

We put on our pins put a few things together and took the walkway over to MK.

It's just so pretty and peaceful walking around there in the early morning hours. Oh how I love being able to walk to MK!!! I was given a special bday greeting in German by a nice man at bag check and then we were into the park. It was still before 8am and MK, while far from crowded, still felt MUCH more crowded than it did when we did this back in December.

The girls checked out the windows at the Emporium and then we were walking right down the middle of Main Street USA. Actually, Kendall opted to dance and twirl down the way with a few poses here and there. The posing is a fairly recent thing. I swear she saw Erstwo's TR last month and got the idea there.

(ahhhh- there's our little ham)

We tried to get a few pics in front of Walt and Mickey, but the few minutes we had to wait made the girls less cooperative.

(I think Sams is actually yawning here- there's no yawning in MK at 8am!)

(we lost K on this one, but Sams is being cooperative)

I got my one relatively people free pic around the castle...

(this was a big deal since I missed out on this last trip with all of our pre-park opening breakfast issues)

After that, Kendall insisted I take pics of every other character around her...and what the heck...better to do these kinds of pics now.

Well, you get the point...she made me take one of everything...with her, without her, with Sammie, etc. At some point I said -ENOUGH!

It was close to 8:15am and our ADR was for 8:25am, so we decided to head over and celebrate Friendship Day...of course, snapping some pics on the way...including a far less people free one of the castle...

(amazing the difference a few minutes makes)

(and this was too pretty to pass up)

There was quite a crowd waiting to get in and they had two check in lines working to speed up that process...a concept Kendall didn't grasp. She started to accuse the lady next to me of cutting- so I got to explain the process and check in all at the same time. Fun.

We were handed a buzzer and took some pics as we waited. I started out just trying to get some nice scenic shots, but then I caught Kendall taking in the castle (kind of reminds me of Estwo's avatar) – and I think it was all starting to set in...just love catching her in a moment of reflection.

It was also about this time where she wanted me to take more pics of her and didn't want to let Sammie in the shots. I still managed to get one silly one of Sams.

They really were just having fun being silly after being cooped up in a car for a couple of days.

before I move on...the girls insisted I include one picture of ducks (and not the Donald or Daisy variety)...so for the girls...here are some ducks...

(as you can probably guess, I have a lot of duck pictures b/c of them)

Our buzzer went off shortly after this and we were seated in an area against the windows by the waiting area outside...which would add another layer of entertainment for Sammie. At first I felt like we'd been put in sort of a corner, but we wound up having more space than our table back in December. We were also greeted by Mickey confetti! DH insists we got this last time, but I don't remember it (nor did I see it on any other table). At least we'd have fun with it later in the meal.

First up was Tigger. I think the girls (and me) were still in shock that they were there and they kind of forgot at first that they could get up and hug him...but they quickly remembered.

[/IMG] (in fact, they were so excited that most of the pics were blurry from them getting a little too silly)

DH took the Pooh pictures because I was up at the buffet with the chef going over the food allergy risks. Looks like he also got Eeyore too- probably my fave pic of this meal.

At least everyone was eating today. Character meal would prove to be a huge distraction from food this trip, but the lure of a chocolate Mickey waffle was too great for Sammie to resist.

It was about this time when DH decided to stick the confetti on everyone's heads. We all managed to keep ours for a while.

Yay! There's Pensacola! **sigh** I wish we could live there.

Awesome video! Love it! The girls are so sweet! I love the excitement. "Disney AGAIN!" Totally goes down in history! Full-on classic there!

Love the confetti-head family!
