Trip Report Lessons in Geography

We've been back for about a month now, and I got my pictures all sorted, and I don't have daily rehearsals or performances now, so I guess this is the time to start my trip report.
I never finished the one from 2016, but I took notes this time, which should make it a bit easier, but it's still a 3 and a half week trip, so there's a LOT to cover.

The basic details:
July 20th-August 3rd at Disney with my four: Myself, my husband M, my Daughter E (13) and my son A (11)
My brother's family joined us for the first week: My brother J, his husband also J, and their daughter N (6).
My cousins met up with us the first day, and we all had dinner together....I believe there were 20 of us in total.
August 4th-6th was just whatever we wanted to do.
August 7th-11th at Universal Orlando
August 12th- Flying home

We stayed at Caribbean Beach resort for the Disney portion of the trip, and at Royal Pacific (Universal's version of the Poly) for the Universal part. In between we were at the Doubletree at Seaworld, and for the last night before we flew out, we were at Allure resort.

Here's my 4, my brother's 3, and 3 of the cousins' group.
Adults left to right:
My brother-in-law J,my brother J, me, my cousin's boyfriend K, my cousin C, my husband M.
Kids:
My niece N (6), My cousin's daughter L (8...yes, she's tiny), my son A (11) and my daughter E (13)

Got all that? Good! Let's go!

It is really bad when you have a little one with you in a women's restroom, and you get asked, "What's that in the toilet?" Really people? You know that if it doesn't all go down, there is a small button that you can push to make sure everything goes down. Those Tomorrowland toilets are the worst in MK I have experienced. In Epcot, the Morocco ones were the worst I had seen. I feel like I can never wash my hands enough after using those bathrooms.
In Epcot, the ones to the right at the American Pavilion, back behind the shop, are so clean and EMPTY. I don't think there was ever anyone in them at the same time we were, and they were always nice. There was a huge long line at the ones by Germany, and I don't know if it has anything to do with the train villiage there, that people can watch the trains while they wait, or what, but those were always busy and the American pavilion ones never were. We didn't go to Morocco this time, so I have no idea what those bathrooms are like, but I can imagine.

I have had the same experience with the America pavilion bathrooms.

Good morning...I just started typing in Dutch. I'm awake. Really!

I got up this morning at 5 to do laundry. We had brought a ton of clothes for our 3.5 week trip, but after a week and a half, we were running out. It had to be done. I got to the laundry room and realized I had forgotten my magic band back in the room, so I couldn't get it. This meant I had to wake my husband up to open the door so I could get my magic band, because I also couldn't get back in the room. Oops. I got everything going, and when I went back to get the clothes out of the dryer, I realized the 2nd dryer never started, so I had a bunch of wet clothes and no time to start the dryer, so I had to just drape everything across chairs, drawers, suitcase lids, wherever there was room. We got to the bus stop and it said the bus would be here in 3 minutes. Good timing! But A forgot his magic band and M had to take him back to the room to get it. (I couldn't be mad at him, having done the same thing myself. ) Back at the bus stop, we had missed one bus, but there was another on the way...and E and I realized we forgot to wear ears! Too late. We got on the bus and there was a little boy screaming the whole time "GIVE ME THAT! GIVE ME THAT!!" Standing on the seat and jumping up reaching for I think the mickey ears? while his big sister stood next to mom, punching her leg. I was reminded of @Tuvalo and...Elliot, was it? We got to MK at 9:15 and as we were walking toward Adventureland, the same family from the bus was walking toward the castle, but now the big sister had taken over the screaming. Jungle Cruise, for which our fp the other night had been canceled due to weather, was already a 30 minute wait. I had other fastpasses for this day, so I didn't want to change any of them...we decided to hope it wasn't quite that long. Then there was a large family in line just ahead of us. It was like, Grandma and Grandpa, a few siblings and their significant others, and a few grandkids. One guy was wearing a stained and holey t-shirt, another guy was missing some teeth, none of them looked like they had showered in the last few days, and one of the little boys was repeatedly hitting grandpa with a cooling towel. I don't like to be judgmental, because you never know what someone's situation is, and I love that Disney is for everyone, but when you have kids screaming, and/or hitting family members, and you do nothing to correct the behavior, it's really hard for me not to give in to those judgements. What was WITH people today?? Since when has it been ok to hit mom, or grandpa, repeatedly? And in a public space? My kids would have been dragged out of there so fast their heads would spin. Yes, it would mean that I didn't get to be there either, but sometimes the lesson is more important and you HAVE to choose your kids over what you want. You have to teach them what's acceptable behavior and what's not, even if it means missing out on something yourself. (stepping of my soap box now)

We were given the worst seats...behind this big box thing, so we couldn't see much, which is probably why I didn't take any pictures. I love all the corny jokes on this ride, and normally my husband has a very similar sense of humor, but either he was still in a bad mood, or maybe he was annoyed from all the bratty children we encountered this morning, but he wasn't enjoying it. I thought the jokes were hilarious though. "These are the largest butterflies in the jungle, with a wingspan from 1 foot up to TWELVE INCHES!" No one else laughed...we were on the boat with the family with the missing teeth and stained clothing and brat child, so perhaps they were as intelligent as they looked? (I know, I'm being judgmental. The child hitting his grandfather just REALLY got to me) What's the scariest plant in the jungle? BamBOO! There's a dock here on the left, and one on the right...we call that a pair-o-docks. Why shouldn't Cinderella play soccer? She runs away from the ball. Well, at least I got to enjoy it.

Our first fastpass was for HM. I wasn't sure A was going to try this one. In 2016, he refused to even get in line until I confirmed they had rider swap so he wouldn't have to ride. We were told to let the next CM know we wanted to make use of the swap, and my husband kept telling A he wouldn't have to go in the building. 3 CMs later (they were stationed throughout the line), we got to the door and we were told the swap location is past the stretching room, and he would have to do that to get to the holding area. There we stood with a screaming 8 year old "No!!! I don't want to go in!!!" and I had to exit the way we had come in while M and E rode, and I was not given any way to come back in to ride myself later, so I had waited in line for 30 minutes for nothing. We had gone to guest services so I could explain to them that children should not have to go through the scariest part of the attraction to get to the swap area, and to please look at finding an alternative, and I was given a fp to ride it later, which was nice. But I wasn't sure how A would handle it this time, now being 3 years older.

He did it!!! Not his favorite, but he did it!!

We headed to Gaston's for a snack. Last time, I got a pastry with ham and cheese and it was SO good, but it wasn't on the menu anymore. We ordered a cinnamon roll to share, and I tried to order extra frosting as suggested on DFB, but they said they didn't have any. :(

It definitely needed extra frosting.
We went to Enchanted Tales with Belle, but neither of the kids wanted to participate. Probably good, because there were a LOT of kids, and they really didn't have enough parts. There were kids that were just inanimate objects like plates.

Then we went to BOG for lunch.

I don't remember what M got, but I got the Onion soup, French Dip, and E got the croque monsieur. She had never had a French Dip and didn't know what it was like. I ended up giving her half mine because she didn't like hers, and I couldn't eat all mine anyway. She loves French Dip! And I guess I don't like French Onion soup...I had never had it before.

Tuesday, July 30th, continued...

While we were eating, I realized I had allowed way too much time between lunch and our last fastpass, Buzz. Our lunch was pretty mediocre. The French Dip was the only thing that was pretty good, and there wasn't really enough au jus for dipping. But E's Croque Monsieur was soggy and the ham was way too thick for it....it was kind of a pasty, mushy mess and I'm not surprised she didn't like it. I didn't either. It's a good thing we weren't really very hungry so she could share my French Dip. So I was trying to change our FP for Buzz to an earlier time, hoping that then I would be able to snag FPs for M and E at AK to do FOP, which I knew M would LOVE, but he hadn't had the opportunity. I managed to get the Buzz fp changed.

As soon as I tapped my magic band, I was looking for FOP fastpasses, refresh, refresh, refresh. I had learned how to do this on the one Epcot morning when I was trying to get a Soarin' fastpass. It only took me a few minutes to get one for 7:15. I knew that time wouldn't work, but I could keep looking, and at least I HAD one. I kept refreshing over and over until I finally got it to 3:35....sweet success!! That would give them plenty of time to get to AK from MK. After Buzz, we split up. M took E to CoP before heading on to AK and I took A to Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. He LOVES this, and really wanted to send in a joke, but with the European phones, we couldn't get the US sim cards to work, so we had no ability to text. He was very disappointed. (honestly his joke wasn't funny, but I would have sent it if I had had a way) A had a great time anyway, because I was chosen to help the mind reader and I had to make all sorts of weird sounds, which A thought was hilarious.

I took A back to the resort because there was nothing he wanted to do and I needed to go to DS to pick up the gift card that came with our package. I got to World of Disney and asked where I was supposed to pick up the card. They brought me to the kiosk where Cybel was very helpful. Cast compliment awarded!
68660090_2432835983703160_6068754128861921280_n.jpg

When I booked our vacation, I also booked my brother's and each booking came with a $200 gift card. My brother had left without ever picking his up, and he had forgotten to bring the voucher I sent him anyway. So I asked if there was a way my brother could still get his card, even though he was home. Could they send it to him, could I pick it up and send it to him, could they send a digital one to his email....something? Cybel said that if I could get him to give me permission and prove he was who he said he was, she could give me the card to send to him. So I sent him a facebook message, which of course had his name and picture, and he sent a message back saying yes, I had permission, so I was able to get his card for him. He said this would make Christmas shopping WAY easier. I had not expected there to be any way to get his gift card, so I was very grateful to Cybel for her excellent service. That's what I call a magical moment!!

M LOVED FoP! I knew he would. I tried to get them another one, but we had an ADR to get to and it just didn't work out. But at least he got to experience it, and that's what matters most. Knowing A wouldn't eat the food at our ADR, when I came back to pick him up, I took him to get fries first, but he didn't like them, so I got him a Croissant and I got a danish. We met M and E at the Poly, but we were far too early, and I wanted to watch the fireworks, so I didn't want to go in too early. We waited a bit to check in, requested a fireworks table and the CM told us they couldn't do fireworks tables because some of them were broken or something? I think it was a line, because when we got in, I saw other people get those tables. But we checked in, and they asked for our phone number, which we didn't have, so they gave us a buzzer and we sat there waiting and waiting and waiting. There was a lady who came in and asked for a fireworks table, and she was given the same line I was, and the lady just started arguing with her. "I don't know why you can't just write it down that I want a fireworks table! Just put it down!" She seemed to feel very entitled. Our buzzer never went off. I finally went and asked how much longer it was going to be and she said our table had been ready for quite some time. Great system. We were sitting right there, no one ever came to call our name, the buzzer didn't go off...if I hadn't asked, we'd have missed our meal completely. We were obviously not seated at a window table, but M and A could see some of the fireworks once they started. I couldn't because my back was to the window, and there was a pillar there in the way if I turned around. The food was really good though!

I also ate quite a bit of steak and M ate shrimp, but I LOVE those dumplings. And the veggies. I love veggies, but I find restaurants aren't usually generous with them, so I love that I could get all the veggies I wanted here! We didn't eat the pineapple bread they give you. M is the only one who likes pineapple and he didn't want to eat that and fill his stomach. He wanted more room for the good stuff. Our server, whose name I can't remember, brought us rice crispy treats, I think because A wouldn't eat any of the food? But he wouldn't eat these either.

I was very disappointed to find that the Poly doesn't have rootbeer and I couldn't find any of the Coke Freestyle machines like we had at CBR that have everything under the sun. I was going to fill up my resort mug on the way out.

We took the monorail back to MK and then waited for a bus. I don't know how long we stood there, but we sat on a planter for a while rather than getting right in line because the line was already so long, we knew we wouldn't get to sit. After a while, we had to admit defeat and just get in line because it was only getting longer, with no bus in sight. Finally, 2 buses came at once, so they were loading the first bus and there was a CM there directing and she was telling us all we had to get on the first bus. It was already pretty full, and we were like 2nd or third in line by that point, so we said no thanks, we'll wait for the next one so we can sit, and she's telling us we can't do that, we HAVE to get on this one. M said no we most certainly do not, we've been here longer than all these people behind us, and we should get the seats. Why should the people behind us get to sit when we've been waiting here longer? She tried to tell us that bus wasn't for us, it was a special bus, but while she was standing there arguing with M, the bus driver opened the doors and was letting people on, so she had to admit defeat and let us get on the second bus. I'm not confrontational and I wouldn't have argued the way M did, but we ended up getting seats, so I guess it's ok. It just took so much time and she could have been loading both buses at the same time so the the people at the front of the line could sit, and it would have been faster. Why wait to load the 2nd bus? Is this standard procedure and why? (My husband's degree is in Mechanical Engineering, and he did his thesis on capacity planning, which is basically how to get all the work done in the most efficient manner, and it was a constant thorn in his side that they did things in a really inefficient way that took up so much more time than it had to.) I'm assuming they MUST have had a reason....or maybe that CM was just on a power trip?

But, having had a pretty good day (I was still flying high that I had been able to get a last minute FP for FoP for M and E), it was nice to get back to the resort and CRASH. Good night!

When we did a swap a few years ago b/c J was afraid to go on they took care of it at the very beginning where you scan your band for the FP entrance. Bad thing was the CM didn't give us anything b/c he said he would remember. He ended up going on break or whatever & didn't tell the next CM.
Glad A went on this time!!

In 2016, I asked before we tapped in how it worked. The CM told me I just needed to let them know we wanted to do that when we entered the line. So as we entered, I told them A didn't want to ride, we'd like to use the rider swap. That person said "Ok, tell the next CM and they'll arrange it for you." We were passed from one CM to another as we went through the line and finally we were all the way at the front and when I told THAT CM, she said he just needed to do the stretching room and then beyond that was the area where we could wait, etc. But M had promised A he wouldn't have to go into the building, so when she said he needed to do the stretching room, he just started screaming, and I asked if there was a way he could skip the stretching room and she said no, and that we would have to exit the way we came, through the line. That was so embarrassing, having to try to squeeze through past all the people, with a crying child. And I'm pretty sure someone told me that there's like a wheelchair entrance or something that bypasses the stretching room, and if that's true, she could have let us through there. And there really should be a chicken exit so you don't have to go back through the line the way you came. And I'm sure she could have done something to give me a fastpass or something so I didn't have to wait in line AGAIN. But she didn't do anything for us, which is why I went to guest services and I told them that we had asked prior to getting in the line, but no one seemed to know how it worked because they just kept referring us to the next person. And I suggested they find a way to do swap without the stretching room. ToT is the same way....you have to do the pre-show before you can swap, and for some kids, that's just way too scary. I understand if some people want to do the line and the preshow without doing the actual ride, but it's quite terrifying for some children, and there should be a way to bypass it. Just my two cents, of course. And I could have cheerfully choked M for promising he wouldn't have to go in the building at all. He had no idea where the swap area was, either...you can't promise stuff like that. But, at least A did it this time.

We slept in! I had planned this as a non-park day. My husband wanted to play Ingress (shocker, I know) and I had an ADR for Homecomin' and wanted to try Polite Pig, so I wanted to go to DS, obviously. My husband had already done DS on one of his jaunts without us, so he wanted to go somewhere else. A wanted to stay at the resort, so E and I went to DS. We stopped at MK because we weren't sure we'd be back to MK again, and we had never found Alice to give her the ears. Rather than carry them around every day, we decided to leave them at the shop at Carrots with a note. Her sister Emily did 2 college programs and we followed her vlog, which is how we found Alice's. Emily is a big Beauty and the Beast fan, so we were also leaving the Beauty and the Beast ears we had made for her. Alice wasn't there, but the CM was kind enough to put them in a bag with a note from us and I went to Alice's youtube channel and left her a note that we had stopped by Carrots and left something for her.
Then we went to catch a bus to DS....apparently there is no bus to DS until after 4pm. So we had to take a bus to SS and walk from there to DS. (Or take a boat, but the people on the bus said it was shorter to walk, and it's a pretty pathway, so we listened to the experts)

We went to Basin and bought some Relaxation bath salts that are supposedly the same scent they use on FoP, and some lemon bath bombs. E's face had been dry and itchy for a while now and she is allergic to my moisturizer, so we went to Kiehls to look for something better, but holy crow is that stuff expensive! We looked at Sephora and several other places, but there wasn't one she liked the scent of and we weren't willing to pay $60 for a tiny pot when she only needed it for a week or two.

Then we went to the Crystal art store that I can't remember the name of. We took pictures of all the things A would love. His big love is sheep...any kind of sheep. But he loves turtles, too.
68393239_358669938370539_1358538635791564800_n.jpg

And of course Star Wars.

68755670_438135013464572_8059034577894637568_n.jpg

Then we went to Ghiradelli for a Seasalt Caramel Sundae.

I think this might have been when we went to Polite Pig? We shared, because we weren't too hungry and also wanted to have room for dinner.

Somewhere along the line we went into a few different stores...I know we went to World of Disney. They had Stitch hoodie sweatshirts just like our ponchos, except with regular sleeves and they zip up...very cute, but $60 where our ponchos were only 15 Euros. We also went to Uniqlo, but didn't find anything. Then we went to another store...not sure which one it was, but they had a spirit jersey I was tempted by. Haunted Mansion glow in the dark!!! But it was also $60 and I prefer zip-up hoodies that can go over a tshirt...I usually dress in layers. They also had a wall with the castle on it, so I asked E to let me get a picture. She was in a mood for some reason and wouldn't cooperate, so I asked her to take one of me instead and she was still being a party pooper and took a closeup of my head instead of a nice picture in front of the castle. 95% of the time she is an easy child and fun to be with, but when she gets in this mood, she's a typical bratty teen. I said nevermind, I'll take a selfie then. She finally snapped out of it and apologized and took a real picture.

We headed to the Coke store. I have a friend who LOVES and collects coca-cola products. I got her a few things, which I need to get in the mail for her birthday, soon. And I took pictures of the store for her, which she said she must avoid at all costs or she'd be broke. Her husband and daughter are huge Star Wars fans...she needs to just avoid Disney altogether.

After our shopping, we went up to the rooftop bar for a coke flight tray.

The sinks in the bathroom were sooooo weird and didn't seem very efficient.

68943881_346765909605873_2993897710630731776_n.jpg

There's only one small gutter with the drain, but the faucet sticks out past that gutter so the water actually falls on the counter space. Very odd.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, when we were buying gifts for my friend, I hadn't realized how many levels there are to the store, so I got stuff downstairs, paid, and then we were on our way up to the rooftop bar when we discovered there was more, so I found more fun stuff and when I went to pay, the CM was slow as molasses. Are the CMs in those stores actual CMs or are they hired and trained by the store themselves? This lady took forever to count cash and give change for the people in front of us, and to run my Disney giftcard through, and she seemed a bit...off, I guess? She was nice enough, just not real efficient or competent, and I REALLY needed a bathroom and her lack of speed was not helping. I felt like I was in Zootopia in the DMV.

We had some time so we went to find Homecomin' so we would know where we were going when it was time for our ADR. I have zero sense of direction.

Yes.. this is definitely Polite Pig... YUM

And the store you were in with the castle wall was Disney Style.

That's not actually a counter, but the sink itself, it's the new style. Personally I like these kind of sinks better because it seems like the sensor that recognizes your hands are under the faucet works better... (sometimes)

We headed out the door, wandering around looking for Homecomin'. I liked the fountain we found.

It took me forever to get the picture of the water feature, because there was someone doing a whole photoshoot while I waited patiently, and then when they were finally done, someone else just walked right up and started their own, like I hadn't just been standing there for 5 minutes waiting for a clear shot. I didn't want to take a picture with random people in it.

We weren't having any luck finding Homecomin' ourselves, so we finally got on the app and used the map...it took a while, but we did finally make it. E chatted with a girl working at a kiosk selling socks on the way while I was taking pictures and following the little dot back and forth because I couldn't figure out which way I was walking. We checked in and sat outside while we waited...those chairs were SOOOOO comfortable. If they had been inside in the air conditioning, I wouldn't have been willing to get up!

E and I both ordered the fried chicken we had heard so much about, but I really wanted mashed potatoes and she wanted mac 'n' cheese, of which I was wary after LTT.

She let me try the mac, and it was WAY better than LTT, but I was happy with my choice. It was good, but I've had better fried chicken. It was a bit dry for my taste. Still a good meal, though. There wasn't anything on the dessert menu that looked good, and from our seat I spotted Sprinkles Cupcakes out the window, so we could not get lost walking there, since it was in eyesight. We decided to walk there for dessert.

We saw a bold squirrel scurrying up someone's chair on an outdoor terrace and we stopped for some pictures on the bridge.

Holy cow....E has lost about 15 lbs since this picture was taken...she looks so different!! Kind of weird going back through pictures...it seems ages ago.

My stomach still hadn't settled yet, and the sky was starting to cloud up, so we decided to get our cupcakes and go! We got one caramel and one oreo cupcake and shared them both.

Here are some other pictures I took...I think maybe on our walk from SS to DS?

Yes.. this is definitely Polite Pig... YUM

And the store you were in with the castle wall was Disney Style.

That's not actually a counter, but the sink itself, it's the new style. Personally I like these kind of sinks better because it seems like the laser that recognizes your hands are under the faucet works better... (sometimes)
Oh, I knew it was Polite Pig....I'm just not sure exactly when we went there. It was that day, but I couldn't tell you when. I'm pretty sure it was AFTER Ghiradelli, but that's about as far as my memory goes and I don't have it in my notes for some reason.
And YES!! Disney Style! Thank you! I was sure someone would know. They had some really cute stuff!

So the sinks are supposed to be like that? I didn't like it because I had nowhere to put my bags and it was hard to wash my hands without all my bags and everything getting wet. The nice thing was the bathroom was pretty much empty.

Wednesday, July 31st, continued....

We planned to stay in for the night. The weather looked iffy, my stomach had finally settled a bit, but I didn't want to push it. And we were tired. E checked her phone and noticed she had a notification that Alice had replied to our comment about leaving something for her at Carrots. She said she was working that night in MK, which was an extra magic hours night, and she would love to thank us in person. It was something like 7:45 pm, so we'd have plenty of time, and we figured the fireworks started at 9, so while everyone was at the fireworks, we could be riding Carrots and Haunted Mansion with low wait times. So we headed back to the bus stop. And we waited....and waited.....and waited. We finally pulled up to MK at 9:10, and rather than pulling up like they usually do to drop you off near the bag check, the driver dropped us off at the CBR stop all the way at the end of the bus stop platform....CBR's is the last spot on the platform. We had to walk all the way up to bag check, go through, and then wade through the crowds. We got in just as the show was ending, which meant we were going the wrong way through the throng of people heading out of the park. It also meant that people who were staying in the park were ahead of us getting to carrots. We got there only to find Alice had just gone on break. The wait time said 25 minutes...perfect, we'll do a spin and when we get out, she should be back.
The wait time turned out to be more like 35-40 minutes. :banghead: But when we got out, Alice was there!!!

We visited with her for a while and we asked if we could get pictures, and she got us swords to use for pictures and had a CM take them. He said "Say AARRRRR!" so I was doing my best pirate face, trying to look fierce, and then Alice and E were busting up laughing.

We did take a nice picture, too.

E was bounding as Rapunzel again, and Alice suggested going to the PP spot by the tangled bathrooms to get the lantern shot. We had spent a really long time talking to her, and she was so so nice. I wish we could have met her sister, Emily, as well...she visited a couple of weeks after we left. But Alice was just super friendly, and it wasn't awkward at all.

It took us a while to find the PP spot....I thought it was right next to the bathroom, but it's kind of across the path under an overhang on a building there. But we found it. It looked like maybe they were training new photographers because there were like 3 there, and 2 of them were really young, and the guy seemed to be giving some instructions. Not the BEST pictures, but it worked.

We wanted to go on Haunted Mansion, but the line was huge, so we decided we'd better not. We were kind of munchy by this time, and really thirsty, so we decided to head to Casey's for a midnight snack before leaving. Corndog nuggets with plastic cheese and some fries....YUM. I know, it's not at ALL healthy, but we were in Disney, and I can't get corndogs in the Netherlands. Corndogs and cheese just hit the spot.

We got back to the resort at about 1:00 am. Time to hit the hay!

What's next? And would we finally have a day with the whole family??

Yep..it's the new "chic" thing!
Well, I have to admit, it looked interesting. But usually I grab some paper towels and set my phone down on them while I wash my hands, but there was no counter space, so I couldn't do that. You know what would be really handy? Have you ever been to a super fancy restaurant where they have hooks on the table for your handbag? It would be really handy to have those under the sinks so you could hang your bag there. And the airport somewhere had these cool sinks where everything was automated and it was one long row. Each sink had its own hand soap and paper towels and garbage. If they had that at Disney, you could just hang your stuff there, wash and dry your hands, throw away your paper towel, all right there, and then grab your bag and go! Although, maybe with the number of people who visit those bathrooms, it wouldn't be practical. It's just a problem I ran into a lot. I was wearing a backpack, and that wasn't an issue, but my stitch poncho didn't fit in it, and E had a poncho as well. So I carried the Stitch ponchos in a nylon bag and I had nowhere to put it when I washed my hands, but I couldn't leave the ponchos in the room, because the restaurants were so cold we needed them when we went to eat.

We finished breakfast and M headed off to play Ingress. I had no idea where he was planning to go, but A really wanted to do TT. (Surprise, surprise!) I took the kids there to get a return time, but it was down, so we went to Imagination instead. The kids played in the fountain area for a bit.

View attachment 416425

A LOVES those fountains and likes to try to "catch" the water as it jumps over the walkway. After we played for a bit, I dragged the kids to the World Showcase. I hadn't really gotten to see much of it yet this trip, and one of the things I REALLY wanted to do was to watch the films in Canada and France. I had seen China last time.

View attachment 416426

To my surprise, A actually loved the film...he thought it was funny. But he didn't like standing for it, and I have to agree with him there. You're on your feet enough without standing through movies, too, however short they are.

We went to the UK pavilion and got Rowntrees. I asked the person in the shop which kind was best because my friend in the UK wasn't responding to my messages. How dare she have a life that doesn't revolve around my querries about English candy! E loved them! I thought they were ok, and so did A, but not something I would seek out because I was craving them. We stopped at the quick service window to ask if @susan lees ' son was working, but he was not at the moment. They said he'd be there in about an hour. So we moved on to France to watch the movie there.

View attachment 416427

I was happy to sit for this one. And it was so dead! Hardly anyone was there....kind of sad, really. I wonder how much that will change with the addition of the Beauty and the Beast sing along, and the added attraction of the Ratatouille ride. I guess time will tell. I liked the movie though. While we were there, we missed our Soarin' fastpass, but I was just quick enough to change it to after dinner. Whew!

We went back toward the UK. Lookwho we found!
View attachment 416429

Poor Jack might have been a bit creeped out, but he was a good sport and took a selfie with us.

We headed to our FP for SSE, but even the FP line was YUGE. We changed that one to before dinner. I know...it's not efficient, running back and forth, but I had zero desire to stand in that heat for however long it took to get through the line. It's in full sun and I did not want a repeat of our first AK day, wasting hours trying to cool down after getting heat exhaustion. So we went back to the American pavilion for Voices of Liberty and American Adventure, since it had been cut short last time.

There was a band called Starlord playing in the outdoor theater there, and A was loving it, and we wanted a drink anyway, which we couldn't bring into the American Pavilion. So we decided to get some rootbeer from the stand outside and watch Starlord while we drank. I think E actually got a rootbeer float...maybe they called it Grootbeer? I know there was some play on words. E was happy because Starlord did a Queen song. (she's a Queen fan)

We watched 2 VOL sets and got some signatures. A didn't care about signatures, so it was just E. M joined us for American Adventure, and it turns out he had kind of been in the same places as we were the whole day anyway. He had gone and watched Impressions de Frans and gone to the UK pavilion, too, and he had been back behind Imagination. M thought the American Adventure attraction was absolutely cheesy. He finds the American...patriotism? kind of over the top and a bit creepy. We got married just a couple of weeks after September 11th, and while we were on our honeymoon, we ate at Hard Rock Cafe at Universal, and on the radio there was I'm Proud to be an American, and of course people stopped what they were doing and sang along, etc...he was creeped out by that because you would never see that kind of display in the Netherlands. He finds the history aspect of American Adventure interesting, but the "We're so great, and our country is better than other countries!" is disturbing to him, like we're being brainwashed to worship our government like a diety. He wasn't too disappointed when it was over. I think it's a one and done for him.
I love the flags in the stairway! So cool to see all the different versions. I wish I had had time to just peruse them!
View attachment 416430View attachment 416431

When we got done, it was time for our SSE fastpass, but we really didn't feel like walking back and forth, so we decided to look through the art gallery in the Japan pavilion instead. The Japanese CMs LOVED E's ears. She designed them herself and made the tsum tsums from socks, and she painted wood grains in the bow...they are very detailed and very much in that Japanese Kawaii style, so pretty much every CM we came across was very excited about her ears. She also made a pair of Lady and the Tramp ones in the same style, but never got the chance to wear them in the Japan pavilion. We also watched the Japanese drummers for a while.

Anyone know if that divide in the toes of the shoes has a purpose? I've never seen shoes like that and it doesn't seem like it would be particularly comfortable, so I wondered if there was a reason for it.

View attachment 416434

The split toe shoe was very fashionable in Feudal Japan. As for as practical purpose, I once read that it allows the wearer to slip on wooden sandals if needed (muddy area) without taking off the shoe. I imaging they could also offer better grip and comfort.

One of my sil's wears split toed socks. She uses them for her slippers which are flip flop designed. I just find them weird.

Agreed! I always like when restaurants/bars put hooks under the bar/table. especially at high tops.

Ah, that makes sense! Thank you! I had never seen them and was trying to imagine having a split in my show between my toes...it doesn't seem like it would be comfortable, but having never worn them, I guess I have no clue!

Thursday, August 1st

I woke up feeling rotten. I had a really rough night and hadn't slept well. I was nauseated and crampy and just not feeling well at all. We were supposed to have a FP for A.S.S. at 9:55 and an ADR for Sci -Fi Dine in at 11:00, but there was no way I was getting out of bed yet. I asked my husband how he was feeling and he was fine, but didn't mind sleeping in. A was fine staying in, and E couldn't go by herself. I'm the one who makes the plans and gets everyone going, and since it was me who was not able to function this morning, that meant no one was going to be up and ready to go. I didn't want to be charged for not making the ADR, so I floated it and then canceled. I canceled the FP because I knew someone else could use that one and we obviously couldn't. I went back to sleep for a few hours and felt a bit better when I woke up. Not great, but good enough to go into the parks. Off to HS we went.

I had really wanted to get a Carrot Cake Cookie, having heard wonderful things about it. We went to Trolley Car Cafe and E and I each got a Carrot Cake Cookie, I got a breakfast sandwich, and there was nothing A wanted.
69548552_489703868475178_1589401765130797056_n.jpg

The breakfast sandwich was decent. Nothing spectacular, but then, I didn't expect it to be. The carrot cake cookie was very disappointing. I hadn't realized it had raisins in it. I love raisins, but not in my carrot cake...it gives it a weird texture and it overpowers the cake. I couldn't finish it. It needed more frosting, too. I'll stick to the carrot cake I make myself.

While the kids and I were getting food, my husband was on his way to RnRC to do the single rider line, then he took A to StarTours while E and I looked for a cupcake, preferably chocolate. ANY cupcake for A. There was not a cupcake to be found. He won't eat things like the butterfinger cupcake anyway, etc, but I couldn't find cupcakes anywhere! I went back to Trolley Car and got a Croissant and a brownie for him, knowing he wouldn't eat anything at our ADR. We met up with A and M at Mama Melrose. In hindsight, going when I wasn't feeling the greatest probably wasn't the best idea, and while it had been a couple of hours since the breakfast sandwich, I still wasn't very hungry, but I really wanted the Steak and Mac 'n' Cheese. E ordered the same as I did, M got a pasta with shrimp, and we ordered the woodfired chicken pasta with A's credit, since he wouldn't eat anything there anyway, and we wanted to try it.

69029983_380376775958811_3032556689787191296_n.jpg

The steak was SOOOOOOOOO salty. I couldn't eat it. I would have sent it back, but since I wasn't hungry anyway, it would have just been a waste, so I didn't bother. I did taste the pasta with chicken and it was very good, and E ended up eating that instead of her steak. M said his pasta with shrimp was really good.

We also got dessert. I don't remember what everything was, but I know the thing on the left was some sort of cheesecake, which A and M won't eat, so I got theirs, and I think the middle thing might have been tiramisu, which only M will eat, so he got those, and then I don't know what was on the right. It must not have been memorable.
67410591_651676391979910_1360967186394382336_n.jpg

While we were eating, I managed to snag a FP for A.S.S to replace the one I had canceled this morning. We had rather bad timing. Once we got up through the line and it was our turn, something happened with our side of the ride and they had to recharge the batteries? We had to wait for a couple of ride cycles before our side was up and running again. It's a one and done for us...none of us enjoyed it. It whipped us every which way and made me nauseated again, and kept slamming me into the side of the car every time it whipped out...very rough and just not fun. Oh well, at least we got to try it, and now we know we won't have to waste time on it in the future. We can use the FP for something else.

We got a DAS return time for TSMM. I am TERRIBLE at this one. I think I had something like 7000 points. Yes, I'm that bad, but A loves it. Then we went to Woody's Lunchbox for a drink and recognized the CM as someone who is often in Alice's vlogs on youtube. We said hi, and mentioned we had just visited with Alice the night before and she asked if we were the ones who knew her family and we said no, we were the ones who gave her the ears. And she made a magical moment for us and gave us free lunchbox tarts. Thank you, Betty!!

Then we went to the Frozen Sing-Along again. We were happy to have gotten Equity Ben as Eric again, but we did not like the woman who played Aria as much.
When we got out it was storming a bit and we hadn't done the Lightning McQueen racing academy, so we decided to walk over and check it out since we had done most of the other indoor stuff already. It was supposed to start soon, and we stood there waiting and waiting. There was a family there who had obviously done something Star Wars...one of the kids had some sort of double sided sword thing that they were swinging around, which the parents should have put a stop to in a confined area, but instead, dad joined in and I think he knocked something over or accidentally hit someone....anyway, I remember thinking that I wished the CMs would say something to them. It was very unsafe and they were lucky no one was hurt. Meanwhile, they kept announcing technical difficulties, we would be brought in in just a few minutes, as soon as it was resolved. 15 minutes later, they announced that they could not fix the issue at the moment, the attraction was closing and we all needed to leave the queing area, and we were shooed out.

Our Mama Melrose ADR was the dining package that included tickets for Fantasmic. With the rain, we weren't entirely sure it would happen, but we had the tickets, this was our last HS day, so we didn't want to miss it. There was still quite a bit of time, so we decided to go to One Man's Dream to pass the time. I was actually really interested. We watched the movie, which I found fascinating and then spent some time looking at displays.

69795120_498192664299030_8928630125210107904_n.jpg

I'm not sure where all my pictures went....I think I must have put them in the wrong folder.
Then we went to Fantasmic, hoping that it would actually go on, though they kept making announcements that it could be delayed or canceled if the weather was bad. We had brought a bunch of glow sticks, and handed them out to the few kids who were there....I think most people must have decided not to chance it, because there weren't very many kids at all, and it had been raining off and on. But the glow sticks were just not wanting to work. I felt bad for handing out duds, but what can you do?
Finally the show started! The lights on some of the boats weren't working, and we were sitting near the front and it was so windy that we were getting quite wet from the spray of the fountains where they project everything. Poor E said she was really cold, and was soooo happy when the lake turned to fire, because she was finally warmed for a few minutes. Once it was over, we made our way back to the buses and called it a day. Not a very productive day, but a day, and I was glad to have had a day with the whole family and no one being a party pooper.
