Trip Report Lessons in Geography

We've been back for about a month now, and I got my pictures all sorted, and I don't have daily rehearsals or performances now, so I guess this is the time to start my trip report.
I never finished the one from 2016, but I took notes this time, which should make it a bit easier, but it's still a 3 and a half week trip, so there's a LOT to cover.

The basic details:
July 20th-August 3rd at Disney with my four: Myself, my husband M, my Daughter E (13) and my son A (11)
My brother's family joined us for the first week: My brother J, his husband also J, and their daughter N (6).
My cousins met up with us the first day, and we all had dinner together....I believe there were 20 of us in total.
August 4th-6th was just whatever we wanted to do.
August 7th-11th at Universal Orlando
August 12th- Flying home

We stayed at Caribbean Beach resort for the Disney portion of the trip, and at Royal Pacific (Universal's version of the Poly) for the Universal part. In between we were at the Doubletree at Seaworld, and for the last night before we flew out, we were at Allure resort.

Here's my 4, my brother's 3, and 3 of the cousins' group.
Adults left to right:
My brother-in-law J,my brother J, me, my cousin's boyfriend K, my cousin C, my husband M.
Kids:
My niece N (6), My cousin's daughter L (8...yes, she's tiny), my son A (11) and my daughter E (13)

Got all that? Good! Let's go!

E and I left the park and went back to meet the boys. We were leaving plenty early, because I had already paid for this experience and I certainly didn't want to be late because of unreliable Disney Transportation. I was also secretly hoping that we could catch another fun activity on the way.

Where were we headed? I'll give you a hint. We caught a boat to Fort Wilderness from the Magic Kingdom. M and A were already there waiting for us. They got mixed up with transportation and ended up taking the resort bus to the wrong side of Fort Wilderness and had to come back. But we met them right in front of Pioneer Hall. The show was not until 8:30, and we had to check in at 8. I don't remember what time we got there, but we had more than an hour before check-in, and what we really wanted was to sit in some air conditioning and have a drink, because it was now sweltering again. But there is apparently no quick service place that has indoor seating.

I had really wanted to go to the campfire to make smores and meet Chip and Dale, but it was ALL the way on the other side of the resort, and we wouldn't make it back in time for Hoop-dee-doo Musical Revue. I was sad. We tried to waste some time by looking through the shop at the resort, but we also really wanted to sit, and everything outside was wet, and there was nothing INSIDE. So we were pretty bored.

E and I finally found a bench that wasn't wet, and we sat down and there was a lady sitting there who struck up a conversation. Her son was just finishing his College Program and they had come to pick him up and bring him home. Then another man came and sat down and overheard us talking about various things, FoP among them. It turned out he was a CM and we talked about our favorite rides, and a bunch of rides that don't exist anymore, or have changed, etc. He saw my lanyard and my phone case and figured HM must be my favorite, and I said it was one of them, but Carrots is my favorite, and we also loved Carousel of Progress, etc. I had mentioned that A was scared to do Haunted Mansion and wasn't sure he wanted to ride it with us. The CM said he didn't need to be scared, that they were friendly ghosts and that he didn't like scary things but loved the attraction. I was hoping an outsider's opinion might convince A, who had wandered over to us, to go on it.
Then the CM was joined by another CM friend who worked in Guest Relations and she started talking about some Disney trivia. She said that when they made Mary Poppins, they had to make the bird animatronic for the Spoonful of Sugar bit, and that it was really advanced at the time, and they didn't want to destroy it after the movie, but also didn't know what else to do with it...they really wanted to display it in some way. Since Mary Poppins was released the same year as the Carousel of Progress was at the World Fair, they used the bird animatronic for the scene where he hears the birds outside the window. If you sit in just the right place in CoP, you can see the bird through the window.

We checked in and had to wait for a while longer before we were allowed in. I thought once we checked in, they'd let us in and seat us, but they didn't. We finally got inside and it was FREEZING in there!! DD and I pulled out our Stitch ponchos and huddled together on our side of the table, which was right up front. (we got a lot of compliments on our Stitch ponchos. Someone actually came up after the show to ask us in which store we bought them and I had to disappoint her by telling her we got them in Europe.)

I apologize for the quality of the pictures...but you get the idea, right? This is from our table.

We were soooo close to the stage. Our server was Karen, and she was great! AJ from Disney food blog had mentioned that servers have a lot of power and that her server at Hoop-dee-doo once noticed her son wasn't eating and went and got him fries from the Trails End next door. I asked Karen if it would be possible to get fries for A because he won't eat chicken, ribs, corn, etc... She said no problem, and I felt bad a little later when I saw her bustling from table to table to keep everyone happy. The poor woman must be dead on her feet by the end of a shift! She also got A some chocolate ice cream since he wouldn't eat the berry shortcake. Cast compliment earned!

I will spare you most of the truly awful pictures, but I do want you to see the joy on A's face. He was having a BLAST. The jokes were so corny, and I was a bit disappointed that when they were doing the song about people coming from all over, and the singer came to our table and asked where we were from, and we said the Netherlands, he talked to us for just a minute and then moved on and introduced a table from Canada instead. But I get why the joke wouldn't have worked with the Netherlands. I guess they don't really expect a bunch of foreigners for this show?
But, Karen gave A the washboard when it was time, and he was loving every minute of it.

He got his favorite foods, he got entertainment, and he was so so happy. Thank you CM Karen for making my boy's night!!

You didn't need to hear about the boat back to MK and the bus back to CBR, right? So let's just skip that and get to the good stuff.

This was JJ's departure day. :( E was particularly enjoying playing big sister to N, and I think JJ were enjoying that they didn't have to keep the munchkin entertained the whole time themselves.
For those who didn't follow the pre-report, you might remember that I was having trouble getting commitment about ADRs. I sent a list of possibilities months in advance of the reservation window, with descriptions of food, theming, etc. No one responded. I made a list of places we were going to go, and told them to let me know if there were any that they would like to join us for. No one responded. I went ahead and made ADRs for 10 of us, so that if they decided last minute, we wouldn't have to try to find ADRs...much easier to reduce the number later than to try to add people. I sent the ADR list with times, and still heard nothing. When we all got there, JJ just tagged along, and I was glad that I had had the foresight to make these reservations for all of us. I had even planned all the really fun stuff that I thought N would love in the first week while they were there, just in case. So it hadn't registered when JJ said they had eaten at Tuskerhouse that that used up their last TS dining credits, and today was the Princess Storybook dining at Akershus, for which they'd need the dining credits.
I'm getting ahead of myself....let's start at the beginning. We got up, planning to do rope drop so I could catch soarin', because somehow someone must have accidentally changed OUR fastpass for soarin' the first day and I didn't realize it until we were already there that I didn't have a soarin' fastpass. We went to Old Port Royale to grab some breakfast. JJ were sleeping in as they had gotten sick the night before. We missed rope drop by 15 minutes, and I don't know what was going on with M, but he was in a mood. We got off the bus and he took off without us, went through a different bag check line, and was just ignoring our existence. We went straight to Soarin', and the wait time said 15 minutes, but we ended up walking on. I had spent the bus ride trying to snag a fastpass, and I was succesful, but we didn't use it as the standby time was low.. We were in Row 2 in the middle. M took A to TT while E and I went through the standby for Soarin' again. We got row 3 far right and wow was that distorted. I had been warned, but it was worse than I thought, and the Eiffel Tower just looked so wrong. Then we finally used our fastpasses and asked for row 1. The CM recognized us, this being our 3rd ride already, so he took pity on us and we got row 1 middle and it was amazing. Then we went to visit Figment.

I had been chatting with my brother via Facebook, and asked them if they were joining us for our lunch ADR, which we were heading to soon. He said they didn't have any dining credits. How could that be? I counted and recounted....I had told them to skip the Boma breakfast just so they would have a credit left for this lunch. How could they not have any more? Then I remembered....they went to Tusker House last night. I was so disappointed, because I had figured this was the perfect end to the vacation...a nice lunch all together with the princesses. Well, that wasn't going to happen. So we went just the 4 of us, and M was still grouchy as anything. (maybe he was grouchy because it was so hot? He's sweating buckets)

482074069.jpeg

E pointed out our server's nametag: Christina from Arendal. Arendal, as in the inspiration for Arendelle! That's so cool! E and I ordered the meatballs.
67590443_502512653819457_2002258477166100480_n.jpg

M got some sort of sampler that had a sausage, a meatball, and some Salmon?
67510817_683020502103373_3580446336090112000_n.jpg

And we asked if they had fries, but they didn't. And our awesome server went and found fries somewhere else in the park for him....how awesome is she??

E did not like the meatballs at all. She had debated whether she should get the kid's menu mac n cheese or the meatballs, so she was really angry at herself for choosing the wrong thing. But Christina was amazing and brought her a large portion of the mac n cheese, and E liked that so much more. And then came dessert. I thought I took a picture, but once again, I can't find it. My phone doesn't do pictures in order when I transfer them to the computer. The numbers are random so they are all mixed up and I have to go through all of them to find the one I'm looking for and it isn't necessarily with the other pictures from the same day, so it's rather frustrating. Well, I remember it was some sort of trio for all of us to share, and it had some sort of rice pudding, a chocolate mousse thing and something else...E and I ate it all because A didn't like any of it, and M said he didn't feel well and needed to leave. He ended up leaving before we paid and he went back to the resort. We chatted with our server for a bit about the real Arendal and she said it was so weird because when she had come to Disney to work, she found one of her school classmates was working there as well, so it was nice to have a familiar face and it was odd that 2 people from such a small place ended up working there at the same time. We also talked about the food and we admitted that we weren't fans of the schoolbread and she said what they have at Epcot is not really like the real stuff they get back home. It's a different kind of bread, and there was something about the custard and icing, too, but I don't remember and I don't have it in my notes.

After lunch we met up with JJ to do TT. We had gone over to get a return time and then went to Mousegear one more time. My brother had wanted to get J an anniversary present, and J had been eyeing the Jack Skellington ears. So he put N and E in charge of distracting J so he could get to a register undetected. My niece is so funny...she suddenly REALLY had to go to the bathroom. Come on, Daddy J, I really need to go potty! So we got J's ears and then waited for the distraction team to return from their fabricated bathroom emergency.

J and I took the chicken exit at TT. I was surprised my brother went on this one.
482241490.jpeg

It was so bizarre....J and I said we decided not to ride and they pointed us to a stairway to exit, but it's somewhat open, so you can see the people in the cars and we wanted to wave to our group, but someone came and shooed us along and told us we could wait for them by the photo screens, but we could not stand there for 30 seconds to wave to them from the stairs. We said we just wanted to wait until their car came by to wave, but nope, we couldn't do that. We had to exit right away. Is this standard practice? It's not like it was a dangerous place to be, or that by standing there we would be ruining the magic for anyone, and there was no one else there, so we weren't backing up a line. So strange.

J gave the kids each $5 to get the TT drivers licence thing. E opted not to get the license and J said she could just keep the 5 bucks.
482257716.jpeg

JJ had a ton of snack credits left, and as it was their last day, they wanted to use them up, so they treated us all to raspberry Lemonade slushies...except A got cheetos because he doesn't like slushies. Best. Slushy. Ever. It was SO good.
We headed over to Soarin' so JJ could ride as they hadn't done it yet. We waited outside and E made a friend. I had parked E and A on a bench so I could go to the bathroom and there was an 11 year old girl there with her teacher for a summer program. The teacher had needed to charge her cell phone and there were outlets there, and the girl had bought a unicorn marionette somewhere and it had gotten tangled and she and the teacher were unsuccessful in untangling it. E asked if she could try. E is...well, first of all patient, second she's persistent, and she loves to help people. She also likes to build things, and fix things...she likes to see how they work. (She got a rubics cube that broke and she figured out how to put it together again, and then when her classmates' fell apart, she fixed them as well, taking pictures of each step to teach them how to do it themselves.) So she managed to get this thing untangled and the girl was so amazed...wanted to pay E and E was saying no no, you don't have to pay me, I just like doing stuff like that, but the girl was so insistent. They had been trying for such a long time and she had thought her souvenir was just a complete loss, and beyond fixing and she was so grateful that a complete stranger would be willing to help her, and was in awe that it was another KID who fixed it when her teacher couldn't. She insisted E take a dollar as a thank you. It was so sweet.

JJ came off the ride and I was glad that my brother had fit into the seat and have the seatbelt buckle. I was a bit worried it would be another FoP moment. But it was fine and they liked it. We said goodbye and N was not wanting to do pictures.

And then it was over. No more family reunion. I'm so sad we didn't have much time that day, but I'm also so glad we got the time that we did.

We truly love Hoop Dee Doo... and just think... that was Karens 3rd show of the night serving... I am sure she was tired! (They don't usually have someone sign there, but if you have a hearing impaired, if you call at least 2 weeks beforehand, Disney arranges for one)

Well, we didn't have anyone hearing impaired, but someone must have, because there were two signers there. One male and one female. I thought it was great that they do that!! But it's good to know, for future reference, if we ever DO have someone hearing impaired. I wish I could sign.

I had them a few years ago & wasn't super thrilled with them myself. I remember the sauce being different. Different in that the taste was not pleasing to me.
Yeah, I was ok with them, but they weren't something I'd crave, and I kind of wish I had gotten the other dish...it was a ravioli, but I don't remember what it was filled with. Last time we were there, I got a goat cheese ravioli or something and I didn't like that, either, but that's because there was something crunchy and sour in the garnish. It was like rhubarb or something and it just didn't taste good with the other flavors, so I was nervous to try the ravioli this time, though I think it was different. I guess I'm just not a fan of the food there, but I only planned it for the princesses for N. We won't need to go back there next time unless we're with someone who is really into princesses. We've been there the last 3 trips, and my kids are both past the character stage. They are fine with meeting some characters, but we didn't have to get any fastpasses for the character spots, or wait in any long lines for them. So there's no need to book a character meal just to get the autographs. The interactions this time weren't stellar either. Like it was obvious they weren't really trying as hard to stay in character because we didn't have anyone who was young enough to still believe they are real. I think Snow White was pretty good, but the rest of them pretty much just stopped for a picture and moved on without even really talking to us. It was not my favorite experience of this trip, though we loved it the last 2 time we went. But that's ok...that opens up a slot to try something new next time!

E & I were just talking about that restaurant on our walk this morning. We both said we're not fans. I've been there twice. Once(like you) I went for dinner so my niece could see the princesses. Then once for a PPO breakfast when FEA had opened just so that we could get on the ride with minimal wait. I will say I liked the breakfast better than the dinner.

t was too intense for me. I kept having to close my eyes so I didn't get sick, and I didn't realize how much the ride vehicle moves with you. This was SO much more intense than I was expecting. I had not expected it to feel like a roller coaster, but it was a one and done for me. And to be honest, I'm not sure my brother would have liked it as he is not a coaster person, either. The girls both wanted to go again, but the wait was something like 175 minutes and there was no way we were waiting for that!
My ds and I didn’t really care for FoP either. It made him ill and ruined a couple of hours for him in the park. AK is his least favorite park, and that ride sealed it for him. 😂

Cool trivia! I have actually noticed that bird. No idea it was the Mary Poppins bird

I'm really glad that your family liked the Hoop De Doo! You had fantastic seats!
We really did! I read or heard somewhere that it's on a first reserve basis...we reserved our tickets pretty early, so that's probably why. It was lots of fun.

Though standing on the bridge across the load zone at TT seems harmless, it is a safety protocol to keep guests moving along to the other side.

People have been known to do dumb things. 😉
Whaaaaat? People do dumb things???

I probably should have broken down and done breakfast instead. We've always done lunch because the first time we went, E was 4 and A was 2, and neither of them would eat standard breakfast foods like eggs and bacon, etc, nor would they eat traditional Norwegian fare. So we did the lunch so we could get pizza for A from the kids menu, and I think probably Mac and Cheese for E? But A didn't like the pizza, and we tried again in 2016 when he was 8 and he didn't like it then either, so I should have just done the breakfast, but I really wanted to try the meatballs. Oh well. It IS a great way to meet princesses if that's your goal.

We never got A back into the park to even try FoP, but that's ok. I don't think he'd have liked it anyway. He doesn't like 3D IMAX movies, because it's a lot like a simulator, and that makes him feel sick, and it IS pretty realistic and he's afraid of heights so I think he'd have been screaming that he wanted off. We don't force them to ride things, and he was happy to have a rest day, so it all worked out. I was SO glad E was willing to take N so I didn't have to go again though!! And that they didn't have any problems with E not being old enough. I'm not sure what the rule is on kids riding without adults, but I was worried she was supposed to be 14, and she's incredibly mature for a 13 year old, but of course they wouldn't know that.

I LOVE trivia. Not just Disney trivia, but just trivia in general. I'm a huge nerd. E is too, so that was right up her alley. She watches all storts of science videos, videos about how things are made, cool facts....she loves learning. But we had never seen the bird because we were always sitting in the wrong spot. We went back after the CM told us about it, and we went over and over until we figured out where to sit to see it. You have to sit to the right of center and a couple of rows back to see through the window. I also noticed other things out the window that I had never seen before. I was glad we had found CMs willing to share their knowledge.

I'm not very awake today...I might be coming down with something. E was sick this past week, so we'll see how it goes, but I hope this is coherent anyway. We left off with JJ leaving. :( I'm still so sad we didn't get to do everything we wanted to do with them. I hope there will be a trip somewhere in the future.
With them gone, and M still back at the resort, we needed to figure out what we wanted to do next. I had an ADR for Via Napoli, and we hadn't really seen much of the World Showcase yet, which is one of my favorite things in Disney. We decided to take a boat from the Future World side of Epcot to Morocco, and then we walked to the American Pavilion. I'm a Voices of Liberty fan and I really wanted to watch a show, and I had included them in the autograph books, and E was hoping to get some autographs. If I remember correctly, we got there just in time for their last show of the day. I think they had maybe already started...I don't have any pictures from this day. Boo. But I do think that E got some signatures in her book. I think from....Alan? Or Adam? (driving me nuts that I can't remember) And maybe one or two others.
We decided to go to the American Adventure, since we were right there, but we had a few minutes before it started, so we made a stop at the bathrooms....those bathrooms are so nice!!!! A couple of minutes into the American Adventure, E was already asleep, and then it stopped...technical difficulties. So we were asked to exit.
We still had quite a bit of time before our ADR, but A wanted to go back to the resort, and I was feeling sad that JJ were gone, so I decided to ask at Via Napoli if there was any way we could check in early, and I let them know we were down to 3.

A wasn't wanting to be in pictures, and he wouldn't eat the pizza anyway. He DID like the pepperoni, and he picked those off and ate them, but wouldn't touch the rest.
For dessert, E got some Ice Cream with Cherries, I got the zeppolis, and A got chocolate cake.

I'm pretty sure this is the chocolate cake from here, but I could be wrong. That's A's go to in restaurants, so there may be more pictures of chocolate cake, but this looks fancy and Italian, and I'm pretty sure I remember the menu saying it was vegan and we were surprised by how good it was. I think A couldn't finish it, maybe? Or it was too rich for him? We got to taste it anyway.
Then we stopped into Germany to grab some caramel snacks to take back to the resort with us. While we were in line, this lady was talking to one of the CMs, and she was friendly, and very extroverted and was obviously tempted by all the goodies and was having a hard time deciding what to get, but Sebastian was very helpful. I didn't see exactly what happened, but she said something about him being amazing and was thanking him, so I'm assuming he gave her something for free so she didn't have to decide. When we came out of the shop, this woman was with her husband and I assume daughter? And they are arguing really loudly. The daughter was probably 17 or 18, and she kind of trailed behind, and I felt really bad for her...she was obviously embarrassed, and probably quite used to this, but the woman is saying "He gave it to me because he liked me!!" and the husband says "I find that hard to believe!" and she says "What, that I'm likeable??"
Not wanting to get caught up in whatever drama might be about to ensue, we sped up and moved past them. As we were walking, I think someone spit on my foot...either that or it was trying to decide if it was going to rain by throwing a few random drops from the sky and then decided to wait. But I did see a guy turning his head like he was spitting, which you just can't do in a place as busy as Disney. So gross. I grabbed a wet wipe from my bag.

When we got back to the resort, we stopped in to pick up my Carrots sweatshirt, and to get more towels because we had declined mousekeeping and M had called the day before for more towels, which were never sent over. So they gave me a whole stack.

We called it an early night and just went to bed.

I just realized I didn't post any pictures of the characters from Akershus, so here they are.

I have also now added a picture of my totchos and such from Woody's Lunchbox to my HS post. I'm sure you were all just waiting with bated breath for that.

We really did! I read or heard somewhere that it's on a first reserve basis...we reserved our tickets pretty early, so that's probably why. It was lots of fun.

Pretty sure it is 14 if the younger child is at least 7.

Aaaaaaand I woke up with no voice. Grrrr. I'm supposed to sing at a wedding a week from tomorrow, so I hope I'm better.

Sunday, July 28th

We slept in. Our first fastpass wasn't until 10:50, so there was no need to get up early. M was still sick and said he didn't feel up to going into the parks. A wanted a rest day anyway, so he stayed with M at the resort. I don't think M was particularly happy about that arrangement, but if he was going to stay at the resort anyway, I didn't see why it was an issue. All A does is play computer games or watch videos, and he won't eat most Disney food, so you just shove some snacks in front of him and he's good for the day. E and I caught the bus to MK and took our time strolling down main street and watched the Citizens of Main Street with the Dapper Dans.

I enlisted my teenage daughter who is much more tech savvy than I to take selfies. She took 5 pictures and they all look exactly the same.

E is very easygoing and she's just happy to be at Disney, so we can take our time and just kind of go with the flow. We decided to go into the glass blowing store, but there was a very awkward teenage boy talking to the glassblower asking all sorts of questions and the glass blower was just moving things around from shelf to shelf, not actually blowing glass, so we decided to move on. When we came out of the store, the trolley car show was just starting.

We walked towards Carrots and stopped briefly at Casey's to watch the pianist. Then the citizens of main street came and sang happy birthday to someone, so we sang along.

Carrots was only a 20 minute wait, so we went on that. The carrot ears fell apart, but it didn't matter because Alice wasn't working anyway. Our picture didn't come through.

We made our way over to Splash Mountain, stopping to watch one of the sidewalk water artists.

For some reason, the pictures aren't working. I'll have to try again later.

There, they are working again now, but I will start a new post for the next part.
