I was looking at youtube videos and I came across a video of the unfinished Pop Cenury Legendary Years. I was wondering why they stopped working on it? I was also wondering if anybody has been inside the unfinished hotel? and also I was wondering if anybody knew when they would resume construction?

Construction was halted when the tourism industry slumped after 9/11 if I remember correctly. There has been little word on if or when construction would resume on that half of the resort; some posters here and elsewhere think the shells of the buildings would likely have to be torn down and rebuilt at this point due to the length of time they have sat open to the elements.

This has been discussed in detail in the past, just search the forum for Legendary years... you'll find plenty to read. As far as I know its still unknown (or at least unannounced) whether or not construction will move forward...

It is worth noting that, since 9/11, Disney has not started construction on a single cash-rental hotel room, vs. what must be thousands of new DVC units by now.

Good point. I would assume that the Legendary Years would be the next non-DVC hotel, if they ever get back to it.

I have it from a reasonably reliable source that they will be starting construction this year.

The Hawaii project had been dominating the necessary departments, but now that it is completed finishing POP is the next big priority.

There was a rumor floating around about a year and a half ago that the Legendary Years would be completed and rethemed as Disney's Animation Inn and Suites. Either it was completely untrue or the project was delayed due to the economy.

Kind of off topic but close.

Is there any web resource that lists opening dates and number of rooms for Disney properties? How about historic occupancy rates?

Considering thatdisney has a hard time filling all their rooms now it would be hard to believe they would start construction on another non dvc hotel. With all the deep discounting on all the hotel rooms since 9/11 i just can't see them opening more hotel rooms.

Wikipedia is a decent enough source for opening dates. For room numbers, here's a post from JPVonDrake from a previous thread:

It not all that uncommon for all the Disney Resorts to be sold out on several select dates throughout the year, especially during peak holiday periods such as spring break and the winter holidays.

Note that sold out does not always mean occupied. Wholesalers, conventions groups, etc. purchase blocks of rooms that often are not completely resold out to their clients. Disney received payment for these rooms, so we cannot offer them to our Guests. That is why you can sometimes find rooms on Travelocity, Expedia, etc, but not when you contact Disney directly.

Hope this helps! :sohappy:

These numbers are little off now, mainly with the additions of the DVC Villas at AKL (300 rooms) and Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary (295 rooms).
