Leaving tomorrow: Daughter gets strep throat today

Doc's office just called and the 24-hour culture came back positive. My 4yo daughter has strep. They said she is able to go and would not be contagious after 24 hours. That's a little relief. However, I have decision and info needed:

1. I can give her a new antibiotic shot that will wipe it out completely in 24-36 hours. It is a painful shot that is in her back cheek for about 30 seconds. Not easy on a 4 year old.

2. Amoxicillin or Augementin for 10-14 days. Not a big issue. The main concern is getting a liquid prescription on the plane in my carry on. This is easily more than 3 oz. Any ideas of what I need to do with TSA on this one? I am going to TSA website to look as well.

3. Z-pack. They don't like prescribing it because it is for serious illnesses that do not go away quickly with other antibiotics. However, I do not want her trip to get ruined because of it. This is my first choice if at all possible from the Doc's office.

I'd go with option 2. From the TSA website:

You may bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes.

I would go with this option assuming she has tried one of these antibiotics before. I would hate for her to have a negative reaction. I am allergic to a few antibiotics and finding out on vacation would be terrible.
I hope she feels better soon!

Thanks for the replies. I was checking TSA while you were responding. I am going with Option 2. TSA states I have to declare it at the checkpoint so they can inspect it by hand. I will have all the necessary doctor notifications with me.

Just one more thing to throw on the pile while I try to close out work, school, packing, Beauty and the Beast Blu-Ray.

Option 2 definitely! I'd never even consider option 1 and I have a 12 year old! OUCH BIG TIME! Besides with option 2 by the end of tomorrow she'll be feeling better...DD has been on amox or augmentin numerous times and is always feeling so much better within 24 hours :)

When we were in Disney in August, I came down with strep. Not fun.

As a dad of 3 kids, I know it sucks to see them in discomfort, but I'd go with option 1. It's 30 seconds, versus suffering for a week or so. I was on antibiotics, and I still didn't feel well. Go to the doc, hold her hand, get the shot, and enjoy your vacation!

small P.S. - buy her a hat of some type. On amox or augmentin you need to kind of stay out of the extended periods of sun so the hat would definitely help!

Go with option 2 and just inform TSA that you have prescriptions in your carryon and make sure to carry them in their pharmacy bottles with their pharmacy prescription labels on them and you won't have any issues taking them through security. I travel with medications ALL the time, and not just one but at least 4 different ones and I've never had a problem. I actually forgot to take them out of my bag once and just as my bag was going through the scanner I remember and told the TSA agent that I had prescriptions in my bag that I forgot to take out and they said that it was fine, that I didn't need to take them out, just let them know I had them in there.

thanks for all of the replies.

We are going with option 2 because it will still wipe it out in 24-hours. It may take her 2 nights to get over it, but we are not going to a park until Thursday for MNSSHP. This gives her a good 48-hours with the medicine. The strep will be knocked out, and she will not be feeling bad.

The good news is that she is not feeling that bad now any way. We took her to the doc yesterday to just be sure. The quick strep test was negative. The 24-hour culture came back positive. Amox or Aug will knock it out just as fast as the shot. The shot simply prevents giving her the others over a course of 10-14 days. Since it has to be refrigerated and TSA will let me bring it on the plane, I can keep it on ice once we are through TSA.

You have already received lots of good advice but one more bit. My daughter (3-1/2 at the time) had to start on Augmentum the night before our trip last December and it knocked out her sinus and ear infections quickly but really, really upset her tummy. Bring some children's pepto and get some danactive yogurts if possible. They both seemed to help.
Have a great time!

This is the reason why I would go with option 1 (shot). It is really rough when you have waited in line for 40 minutes and your little one has to go liquid #2 due to antibiotics. TSA and keeping it refrigerated is only a small consideration. Good luck, hope she gets better, and have a blast!

Amen to that!! Between her illness, DH having bronchitis and DS having the croup and a double ear infection the Disney week got off to a rough start. But it was still our best vacation together EVER!!!! Going back this December, hopefully healthier!

Thanks. I am aware of this. My daughter got this when she was younger too. However, she has not had this issue since. There is some enzyme/bacteria powder you can get that replenishes the ones the antibiotic gets rid of. I will have that with me as well as Montezuma's Revenge preventer (we have a prescription for anti-diarrheal).

Option 1.
My daughter was soooo bad at that age about taking any medicine that we had to opt for shots until she could swallow pills. If she hadn't gotten shots she would never have gotten the medicine in. Gagging, crying, puking. One shot and done. It was in her thigh and I don't think it was 30 seconds.

I didn;t see what hotel you guys are staying at but make sure you get a refrig for your medication. If you at a value its free, just mention you have medication that needs to be refrigerated! I would go with Option#2. My son HATES shots and it might make her a little sore.... and whether your driving or flying..not comfy! He has never done the shot but amox normally does the job (we hate augmenten!) I hope it all works out!

OK. All is good. Daughter is on Augentin and it does not need to be refrigerated. She was her normal rambunctious self last night and woke up excited and bouncing off the wall. 3PM cannot get her soon enough for her. I even tried to get Southwest to move our flight from 5PM to 1PM because it is fully booked. They would not do it.

We'll be landing at MCO around 7PM, checking into the Marriott by the airport for the night and off to Pop Century at about 9AM from MCO when we meet up with the rest of our group.

Have a blast. I hear dole whips, Mickey's premium bars and fresh made ice cream sandwiches from the Main Street Bakery are great for strep throat.:D
