Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Love the mask! We don't have costumes either. I don't blame you for changing to Cali. I would if it was only up to me. I have to call and place my order for Cadence's cake and order my PhotoPass+ soon.

I asked DH if he wanted me to buy him the Ironman LED mask, but he's afraid the girls will get jealous and not want to be what they're currently slated to be. It's too bad though b/c we have a really silly Ironman story involving Kendall and DH...but I don't think DH wants me sharing it. It's kind of embarrassing. I told DH about Cali last night and while he really doesn't seem to care, I think he appreciates me shifting Sanaa to a more snack like experience.

When do you think you're going to put in the orders? I know I ordered my cakes a bit on the early side this time. I can't wait to see your cake as well. So many cakes :)

Still Following...Glad to know they can accommodate most of your cake requests!!

Now to decide if I make an edible grass skirt and lei. My friend suggested I just buy something, but everything I found was for Barbie and it was vintage. I could make grass skirts for every single white chocolate figure they offer and the cost would still be less than the Barbie stuff.

A couple of little updates...

After seeing Sammie's mask, I felt like Kendall needed a light up aspect to her costume. I found this light up bow tie for fairly cheap on ebay. It has an adjustable neck strap, so I'm thinking it should work well as Snow White's bow.

I also got an email today stating we were selected for Magic Band testing. I decided to try it, but not sure how much it's going to help us since our tickets are not linked into our reservation. Still, it will help with other matters. I got Kendall pink, Sammie blue, DH grey, and me yellow.

I'm not sure what the edible ones would run you but there is this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-BARBIE-IN-HAWAII-GRASS-SKIRT-EXC-NM-/370886446616.

However, a grass skirt is just crepe paper. So making one would be pretty cheap, even if not edible. You just would use thin green ribbon and staple/glue strips of crepe paper on. And for a lei, party stores have the lei bracelets for Hawaii parties - one of those would be a similar size I bet.

Thanks :) I did see that one, but I can't see myself spending more than $2-3 to dress the topper. Ultimately, the cost to make it out of fondant (since it would take so little) would be less than $0.25. Assuming this topper is in the same size class as the last one we ordered. I don't think the lei can be any larger than a small rubber band. We'll see...still a few weeks to decide.

How much time would it take to make Donald's costume?

You are spending a lot of time on costumes for other people. You must be a mom.

It would probably take me 1-2 hrs to make it. The bigger issue is traveling with it and affixing it to the figure. The lei would be no big deal, but the grass skirt would be a different story. I'd have to bring a small bit of un-sculpted colored still pliable fondant with me and try and get it to stay on him w/o destroying the paint job. I'm thinking the flower lei alone might be the better plan. If I kept it simple, it would be easier to make and I could just put it over his head with very little effort.

I know. I said the exact same thing to a friend at work today. My words "DH and I don't have costumes, but now the kids have costumes, shoes, and light up gear." She laughed and said it wouldn't shock her if the kids had matching mini purses, pins, halloween lanyards and wands before I get to our costumes. She compared it to the guilt she was feeling for driving up to Dallas for a Cowboys/Texans game tomorrow. She's only spending about $100 on the trip - including the tickets (which are really good ones) - but that whole mom thing keeps making her think she should be spending this time and $ on the kids.

Small updates....

1. Magic Bands...so I got an email on Wednesday inviting us to test them. So, I put in my order. They must really be eager to have people test, b/c I got a UPS letter inviting us to test them the very next day. The actual bands arrived today. Thankfully, the box didn't have any Disney anything on it. Too bad Kendall was waiting on a package and insisted I open it. They bought it yesterday with the envelope by me saying it was just Disney trying to get us to book another trip, but thankfully I opened this box just out of their view- so neither of them saw a thing. Still interesting to see how eager they are to have the testing done- i.e. email and overnight mail? and how fast the bands got here.

2. Kendall's LED bow arrived. It's perfect! It has 3 settings...fast flash, slow flash, and no flash. It's also pretty bright, easy to use, and should be relatively easy to adjust to her head and bobby pin.

3. I had to change my cake filling flavor. :( It's not my choice, but some girls at work yesterday were talking about mango, and I got to talking about the mango/lemon infused goat cheese/bacon chocolates I was making...as well as the cake filling. And then it hit me...my brother is allergic (very allergic) to mango. So, confirmed with Chef Donald that the passion fruit filling is mango free- and called the private dining cake line to change the filling. I also put my brother in touch with private dining since mango is an uncommon allergy. I guess at least his cashew allergy falls under Kendall's tree nut allergy- so we're covered on all of our ADRs for that.

Beyond that...Sammie's new Crocs for the trip arrived. They don't really change color all that much and don't pull any purple as suggested in the picture, but she loves them anyway. I also emailed Kendall's teacher about the upcoming absences today...we'll see how that goes. I really just told her that we haven't seen my parents since early May and are flying to Florida as a slightly belated bday surprise for my mom.

Hard to believe it's now less than 3 weeks away. We're actually a little less than a week away from when I get to tell the girls we're going to FL for grandma's bday. That will be a glorious day...because that's the day when I can start packing all of the non-Disney stuff. It'll be here before we know it! :)

So, we're now 18 days out and I really have to start thinking about timeframe on some things. I need to order a new set of epi pens...not fun, but since they can take up to a week to get in...I need to get those ordered ASAP. We all recently went to the dentist, so that visit covers travel tooth brushes and travel sized toothpaste for everyone. I know- not fun either, but it's stuff I don't have to pay for.

I did decide to get the girls pins. I bid on a lot of 25 yesterday morning and won it for $10. I also picked up some heavier- Halloweenish- lanyards for a little over $7 for both (I hate their princess ones from last year and they don't like the idea of the bags).

$(KGrHqQOKk!E29RJnSheBN2EVE7jkg~~0_12.JPG

On top of this...this week will involve some shopping for me, trying to decide on Halloween costumes for me and DH (Still!), getting the dog to the vet for her next flu shot, and on Thursday...the girls will be told that we're going to FL to celebrate grandma's bday. This will at least allow me to start some of the packing.

Now here's a concern I knew would be hitting around this time, but now that it's here...I can't help being nervous. It's really 2 concerns...

1. Airport issues
2. Tropical Systems

Between seeing my friend caught in a 3 hour delay at Denver yesterday to seeing an electrical issue cause huge headaches at Houston Hobby this morning...I'm worried about what kinds of delays we might see...especially since our air travel involves making a connection.

We've been in a system with sinking air, which is not favorable for tropical storm and hurricane development; however, all of that is expected to change within the next 7 days. Meaning, the tropics could really heat up for the US for the last 3 weeks of September. Of course, just like air travel- you can't predict these things.

Still, it's all got me thinking about that Cali Grill ADR. Do I keep it at 7:15pm and hope for the best? Do I cancel it and not take my chances with such things? Do I rebook for a 9:10pm ADR and just use it for dessert if we happen to arrive early enough and want a real meal before all of that? SOOOOO TORN!

I wouldn't worry too much about the tropical systems. It has been a pretty relaxed year in that regard and when we went the same week back in 2011 we had no issues whatsoever. In fact it only rained while we ate lunch at Mama Melrose's that entire trip. Not sure what time your flight is due in, but I would say do the later ADR just to be safe. Make it a "YEAH we are DISNEY, now let's gorge on yummy desserts celebration meal" .

Well, hopefully it will stay quiet through our visits as well. I tend to be hyper sensitive with the tropics a) because of where we all live b) because of my dad. Half of his background is in meteorology, so discussions on conditions can be pretty in depth. The reality, even if it picks up the way it's looking like it will, it's still an odds game as to if and where it hits land.

We're getting in around 2:50p...so if things go along the lines of how it did back when we did DME in 2010, we'd still have a couple of hours of cushion to work with, BUT- the airlines are such a mess that it's still quite a gamble. I'm going to have to think on it.

I would do the later reservation just in case. Better safe than sorry!

It's definitely sounding like a good insurance plan. I have to head that way no matter what to talk to Guest Relations. I'd feel a lot better if I could get an 8pm. Sad b/c that's what I was originally thinking of booking, but no... I decided to go for the earlier one. Silly me.

COSTUME HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I think I figured out a good costume for me, but I've got a bit of a dilemma. The perfect top to go with it is sold out in every size but a junior small.

OK, so let me backtrack a bit. Sammie has a Jessie hat (bought it for Go Texan Day last year). It fits me and my hair is long enough to braid, so I started thinking that I could be Jessie. I even found a perfect shirt!

th

The only problem, it's sold out just about everywhere. One place has it in a junior small, but I have a feeling it's going to be too snug.

They make a dress version of it...
07217813.interactive.a.jpg

...but I haven't been comfortable in dresses like this in a good 20 years. YIKES! Still, I could wear it as a shirt. Of course it's like $30 (shirt is $20), so part of me is more tempted to just buy the shirt and attempt to open up the side seams to just add some panels....oh wait, I really don't sew. o_O

Then I thought, maybe I could go for conceptual Jessie. I found this shirt for $10.50...
$T2eC16RHJGsFFMlfig4YBRhHsCoY+w~~60_57.JPG

...it could work. It's a few sizes too big, but too big works better than too small.

Any thoughts???????

There's this one as well:

http://www.costumeexpress.com/p/698...EEXPRESS-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^31235404151

Personally, I think the dress one is a little, ahem, well, y'know.

I'd go with the conceptual or the full piece.

Yeah...the dress would need some help to make it more suitable. The costume on the link is cute, but not sure if I want a full blown costume. I know - kind of crazy o_O

Yeah the dress, not so much.

Seems to be the majority feeling on it.

The dress with some red capri leggings and another red tank top under it wouldn't look quite so, ahem, risqué... for lack of a better word. :)
Otherwise you could spruce up the conceptual Jessie shirt with some yellow details. Could be cute!

That's kind of where I was going with the dress...layering tank, maybe some boot cut yoga pants. I think that's just what I'm going to do...get the conceptual shirt and maybe add a yellow tank underneath.

Now to focus on DH. Thanks guys!

Hooray! You are doing some 'me' shopping. I like the conceptual idea. As long as the elements are recognizable, it should work. I'm doing something similar with Ma Beagle.

You live in Texas, aren't things like belt buckles and boots standard issue?

Ha- I don't even say "Y'all." :D

I did put in an order today for DH...he's going to be Buzz. So, I got him this shirt.

I thought about wings and a hat, but wings are always a mobility issue and I didn't like any of the adult hats...or adult hat prices.
