LA Times: Is Disney Paying Its Fair Share In Anaheim

Is it really all that surprising?

With all the chaos going on in the world today nothing surprises me anymore. A ghost could come sit on my face in the middle of the night and I wouldn't budge.

All this is to say that Disney, a global media company, making dumb decisions and throwing its weight around to intimidate isn't a surprise, it's business as usual. In this regard Disney is no better than the LA Times.

Edit: Here's another source reporting on the LAT/Disney drama.

Throwing its weight around to intimidate? Come on, really? They just didn't invite the LA Times to some special media movie previews. How is that really throwing their weight around to intimidate? I used to remember when mainstream media went to the general movie premiers to review movies not some special media preview. I swear if you don't treat some of these media guys with kid gloves and make them feel special they slam you.

Is it really all that surprising? It was a one-sided hit job of an article with a headline that was misleading and really was just meant for clicks. It doesn't even answer its own question that is asked in the title. It is really an op-ed piece pretending to be journalism. Too many supposed journalists these days insert their own opinion into their articles that really should be on a blog. Unfortunately the days of unbiased journalism is becoming few and far between. Instead we have bloggers pretending to be journalists.

Other than your unfortunate misunderstanding of how free press, journalism and keeping an informed citizenry works....so what? Even if the LA Times did what you say they did, that doesn't mean you bar them from reviewing your movies. The guy who is gonna write the movie review had nothing to do with the article, and they are on completely separate topics.

So let's play this little game out. Now, I've disagreed with you right here in this post, vehemently. Are you going to stand for that? Are you going to block me from ever responding to you again, even in topics that have nothing to do with this? How much Disney do you have in you?

@DisneyIrishGuy - you hit the nail on the head. It's not just the journalists, either. Entire networks have a "slant" or bias now.

@choco choco I got news for you - the press ain't free anymore. Also, Disney has fallen into the trap of believing that tossing freebies and VIP treatment at people is how to earn good press. That's not how it works - that's how you BUY good press. A perfect example would be the 30-day Bucket Family. That was a sponsored 30-day Disney World vacation comped BY DISNEY. If they reviewed Disney only in a positive light, I would never believe a word they say because I would have no reason to think they were being honest. The same could be said for book reviews - many are paid for, so they're only going to say nice things.

So, Disney is upset that an LA Times article paints them in a less than favorable light...they yanked VIP privileges - which is within their rights. They certainly didn't ban them from writing reviews though - that would be impossible. However, I'm of the opinion that the VIP privileges were unecessary to begin with if you want honest reviewing.

Other than your unfortunate misunderstanding that Disney has the right to do whatever they want when it comes to their movie screenings.. so what? It’s a private company, they can do what they please. Sorry.

Here is Disney's Response

http://deadline.com/2017/11/disney-los-angeles-times-battle-anaheim-coverage-boycott-1202201260/

>>Despite our sharing numerous indisputable facts with the reporter, several editors, and the publisher over many months, the Times moved forward with a biased and inaccurate series, wholly driven by a political agenda — so much so that the Orange County Register referred to the report as ‘a hit piece’ with a ‘seemingly predetermined narrative,’” Disney added Friday, giving no quarter. “We’ve had a long relationship with the L.A. Times, and we hope they will adhere to balanced reporting in the future.”<<

And a Washington Post Opinion piece...

http://www.anaheimblog.net/2017/11/...-structure-to-west-side-of-disneyland-resort/

>>The company had filed plans with the city last summer, but had encountered objections from several Harbor Boulevard hotels and businesses concerned how it would impact their bottom line. Disney has been trying to work with them when the new council majority elected in November 2016 moved to make appointments to city commission’s district-based. Councilmembers Steve Faessel, Lucille Kring and Kris Murray called for a phased transition to avoid disrupting the work of the commissions – especially the Planning Commission – and the sudden loss of institutional knowledge. The so-called “People’s Council” majority rejected that compromise and forced the mass resignation of all city commissioners.

The Planning Commission essentially shut down for several months as new commissioners were recruited, vetted and appointed. This predictable and entirely avoidable pause led to Disney taking a second look at its Eastern Gateway plans, ultimately shelving them in favor of the westside Resort expansion.

“This will allow Disney time to determine the highest and best use for each of Disney’s east side properties over the long term,” according to the company’s media materials.<<

Entire networks have a "slant" or bias now.

You act as though Disney isn't a part of the problem. The Walt Disney Company is currently the biggest studio in Hollywood with full control of ABC News and its journalists, giving the company the ability to "slant" this story however it wants through it's vast media network. Folks here need to stop ignoring that Disney, itself a global media company, is engaged in the very thing that you all are rallying against here.

Other than your unfortunate misunderstanding that Disney has the right to do whatever they want when it comes to their movie screenings.. so what? It’s a private company, they can do what they please. Sorry.

So can the LA Times.

Oh, believe me, I'm aware that they do. I'm pretty miffed at the situation with throwing freebies at people who aren't truthful, if you can't tell.

I'm not complaining about the LA Times, they are fake news though thats for sure.. I probably won't read their articles anymore. I hope the people hating against Disney stop going to the park, parks getting overly crowded the past few years. No more off season..

Also, our town went through something similar a few years ago. Some idiot on the town council decided that it would be in the best interests of the town to give the nuclear power plant a 100% exemption from real estate taxes after "x" number of years.

Well..."x" number of years passed, and now the town is out something like $12 million in tax revenue annually (or some other ridiculous number - I don't remember the exact figure)

This same town surreptitiously partnered with a third party to negotiate our electricity prices for our "benefit" without informing anyone outside of town meetings. Nothing online, nothing in the mail. Nada. Zip. Needless to say, there are some pretty angry people around here.

Odd how you can so casually dismiss the LA Times while giving Disney a complete pass. Oh well, I shouldn't be surprised. This is a Disney fan site after all.

What precisely was "fake" about the article? It had a crappy title and didn't present Disney in a good light. But "fake"? Let's just not through words around...

Without Disney Anaheim would be a bigger dump than it is now, it probably wouldn't even be a city.

And this Disney fan site hates change for some reason (not as bad as Micecrazychat.com though), even though it brings more people and changes things up. These Disney fans want to keep the old things which goes against Walt's ideas. Walt didn't want Disneyland to stay the same for decades, or else it would get boring.

"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."

Well I'm definitely not one of those people.
