Kevin Yee Reports - All the missing curtains

The World's best entertainment company (?) can't get curtains to move. May not make or break a show, but makes a difference.

They once used to care.

But why do they need to now? So many people will defend them anyway ... and they are working to own social media, so that folks like us will become irrelevant if not silenced completely.

How many people are going to complain? How many are also going to start taking shots at Duncan Wardle and the propaganda brigade? You know, they have email addresses for a reason! And they really care and want to share that with the fan community!:drevil:

Looks like Kevin will be the lead story in the weekly social media damage control PowerPoint deck. Good job!

Better luck next time spirit

I dunno. I actually was busy today (although no flowers, chocolate or 'activity' for the Spirit today:() and just read Kev's column before a nice workout.

I had planned on returning to start a thread here ripping him because I didn't particularly like the fact that the column was largely a droolfest (any drooling smiley?) over the new 'Let's Turn the MK Into a Giant Video Game' ... it seems the things Kevin likes best about it are the fact his kids enjoy it (and you can't blame him for that one) and the fact that the playing cards are the next pins/vinyl and all the O-Town geeks want to OCD-ly play until they get all the cards ... and then they hope more cards will come out and they can trade etc (and I can and will fault him for that since I believe pins and vinyls -- which I saw groups trading a few weeks ago in Anaheim -- have been a pox on the parks).

Since Disney IS going to be selling special cards and a line of merchandise associated with the game and since Disney cares about money even more than image, I'd say he made as many or more folks happy with his column than he angered.

I've often said (and to his face as I like Kevin personally and I also don't believe in saying anything behind one's keyboard that you wouldn't say to one's face!) that he tries too hard to be what he feels is fair and balanced unlike his pal Al Lutz.

Anyway, point here is while that column may have showed just how pathetic SQS (do they even exist in O-Town anymore?) are at WDW, it also raved about Disney's latest NEXT GEN push.

Do they care about curtains or laugh them off as obsessive crazy fanbois complaining or do they care about a $1.3 billion (and rising) NEXT GEN project more? Think about it.

If anything this was a balanced column for the Celebration Place Social Media Cabal to deal with at worst.

~Sorry, Kevin ... I calls them like I sees them!~

I think at some point, and this "point" may already be reached by some, the small details will add up to bigger things that even the ones who defend these things will have to notice. Personally I don't see it as such a huge deal as some, but I believe where there is smoke there is fire. If Disney stops caring about the little things, then bigger things like the yeti and the poor state of splash mt. they won't care about either. With that said, I don't know how most people who complain about every chipped paint and burnt out light bulb can continue to give WDW their money and help them fund things like next gen and WDW's 'staleness.' Actions speak louder then words.

I read the Kevin Yee column this morning about all the missing curtains.

I can't be the only one who thought, while reading the list of missing curtains... "Well, they probably just sent them out to the cleaners." :lookaroun

But seriously, multiple sets of missing automatic curtains all over property? That's too weird and too much of a coincidence. I have to wonder if TDO, in their somewhat skewed wisdom, struck a cheap contract with a commercial dry cleaning service and sent all of their curtains out at the same time for cleaning. Or am I just being naive?

Could all of those sets of automatic curtains at theater attractions in nearly all four parks really be broken and/or removed all at the same time? :veryconfu

The curtains at UoE have not been in operation for a good number of years now, prior to the big update to the backend system a few years back.

I posted elsewhere when I noticed the drapes missing:

Ellen 3rd showroom (when she's on the helicopter) - maybe three years ago?
Impressions de France - about two months ago
Philharmagic - February 12

I got a return comment that in the case of the France movie, the curtains broke, and Disney has now outsourced this kind of repair - their own mechanics aren't allowed to do it - so they are waiting on an outside contractor to do it.

Hopefully the France and Philharmagic curtains were just sent out at the same time to be fixed, (maybe it saves some money to do them all at once?) hopefully. But I have a horrible feeling they have gone the way of Energy. I hope Im wrong. TDO is getting worse every week I just dont know.

Of course I'm not mad at you, Spirit, but you knew that. As I explained on our walk around World Showcase that day long ago, I also choose to "call it as I see it" rather than overlay an artificially-negative spin to everything I do. I simply tell the truth as I see it. I like Sorcerers and think others will too, but agree it will create problems in the park. I hate the lack of upkeep and have spent the past eight years online pointing out the shortcomings in my columns.

Part of the reason I choose to not harp ONLY on the negative is that you create a weariness in the reader with such a relentless approach. It would be different if my column were simultaneously disgorging insider information about company internal politics or the next attraction to debut in months, because then people would click on my articles no matter what else I said in them. But I lack the sources to do that effectively (or at least consistently).

Thus, if I tried to go "all negative" in an effort to really get the word out and hopefully effect some manner of change, people would soon write me off as a one-note negative ninny (many already have) and tune out.

Besides - and to circle around to the front of my argument - I prefer to simply tell the truth all the time. Life *is* balance. Anyone who claims otherwise has never tried to be father, husband, employee, entrepreneur, friend, and author all at once. :)

There. Insider information on what this columnist, at least, has running through his head :)

Does this response not bother anyone else? When does outsourcing get to the point of ridiculouness so that capable cast memebers cannot fix an issue that they have maintained for nearly 30 years.

I don't know if I was just in a daze but I didn't notice anything different about Philharmagic on January 27. It is one of my favorites so I feel I would have noticed if something was off that day. Hoping this one is just a temporary technical difficulty.

People worry way to much about these strange little details. Im so glad that Im not so bored with vacationing at WDW that I have to look for missing curtains or broken animatronics. :ROFLOL:

The reason we have the maintenance we do, ladies and gentlemen.

These "strange little details" are what made Disney the best. Letting them fall by the wayside is what will lose them that title.

Some individuals spend more time looking for dead light bulbs and chipped paint than smiling at WDW. Those people need to go to jail.

Besides 3/4 of WDW is behind walls and tarps right now. So anybody who still says TDO does nothing (not saying it's you), can also go to jail. Better yet they can help a brutha out and stay home. Lines will be shorter that way.

"Go to jail"? Seriously? Not only are you defending Disney lowering their standards and belittling those who uphold the kind of details Disney parks are known for, but you think these people should be imprisoned?

I join GLaDOS in head banging.

Excellent view point. TWDC sends it's thanks in the form of less maintenance crews and more smiling Princesses.

Exactly, the "strange little details" all added up to a wonderful, magical experience. The more they disappear, the less magical things will feel.

Agree, which is exactly why things are going the direction they are, and this is how management thinks. People dont care so lets cut corners and get by, were raking in the money anyway so who cares. I think Paul Pressler is secretly running WDW. :brick:

Or you know, it's just a natural occurrence. I enjoy myself immensely when I'm there. But it's hard not to notice the obvious things like swatches of lights out, shoddily maintained attractions, and parts of the park looking tired. Has nothing to do with looking for it, and everything to do with just seeing it.

Are people just supposed to overlook it because they're on vacation? I don't. I was raised on a Disney that didn't accept burnt out lightbulbs and broken effects. And honestly I want that Disney back for my kid's. Which is why I'll probably take them to DLR when the time comes. Because WDW isn't that Disney anymore.

Besides 3/4 of WDW is behind walls and tarps right now. So anybody who still says TDO does nothing (not saying it's you), can also go to jail.

First of all, the MK is basically the only park this is applicable to, and even then 3/4 is a gross overstatement.

And while the MSUSA refurbs are nice, that's where most of the maintenance has stopped. Rides and attractions are still neglected resort wide due to minimal maintenance staffing and budget cuts.

It is just another way to save money. Management tries to outsource more and more repairs. That means less maintenance workers and don't have to pay benefits for them and less parts they have to keep on hand.

But at least they are fixing somethings, a lot of things especially backstage they just turn off and leave off.

While I had been to WDW before 2004.....2004 was the first year that began annual trips to WDW and later on as an AP Holder. I've gone to WDW between 2004 and 2011 with different family members and friends, only two which were familiar with much of WDW like I was. By 2011 it was becoming obvious to myself and my family and friends that WDW was not the place we knew it from the 90s and 80s and for some relatives as early as 1973.

My family and friends were actually feeling ripped off. Prices going up everywhere, yet barely any unique merchandise that you couldn't find resort-wide among a lack luster food selection. One of them demanded we go off property and eat at a higher end restaurant for less. :lookaroun Yeah that was a fun trip that year (2009).

As mention before and as some other WDWMAGICEARS have said, I too have not newed my AP. I haven't been to WDW since the summer of 2011 and have no interest in going back anytime soon.

I actually feel kind of sad thinking about it. I used to love going there, but barely anything changes and I'm one of those fanboys that goes gaga when they refurb classic rides the right way like haunted mansion 2007, the morgan freeman version of the hall of presidents, tiki room 2.0, and the digitally remastered version of impressions de france. But...70s parade, old fireworks shows, old floats, tired stage shows....magic...dreams....memories....the same basic marketing gigs that have been going on for about 5 years now in various forms? No....sorry, not interested.

Had more fun watching all the plathora of halloween and christmas seasonal displays at Disneyland Paris, plus all of that is FREE and still offers you MORE. Plus the great range of restaurants from counter to sit down where you still feel like a king eating at toad hall at disneyland paris and getting great proportions for your euros. (I was going to say dollars, but that would have been awkward  )

Sorry kids, next stop Disneyland USA this summer when DCA's expansion opens.

WDW is not the vacation kingdom it was...and hasn't that "where dreams come true" banner been on the entry archs for a few years now...poor thing is bleaching in the sun. I love Disney and love Disney Theme Parks, but the management of WDW has turned a place that offered classy and upkept service into a generic cash cow of tired entertainment or classic attractions such as country bears and carousel of progress that need refurbs desperately, but screw that when you can look at TV monitors on it's a small world and your build-a-doll.

I really can't stand when people defend things like this. Does the doom and gloom crowd sometimes over-react? Yes - see the Kilimanjaro Safaris ending change thread. Will this ruin someone's vacation? No. But this is a legitimate concern as this is something that the world's larget entertainment company that used to pride itself on perfection SHOULD be able to promptly fix. They're just curtains! How hard could it possibly be to fix?? Oh, right. They're just tourists... what do they know? We already have their money anyway.
i cant get too upset about curtains, next gen and what not..when the FL expansion is just around the corner..

babysteps for me..
FL expansion should not be used as an excuse for attractions to fall into disrepair everywhere else. Did this happen when DHS and DAK were under construction? No.
