Just told the kids!

My wife finally allowed me to tell our girls about our next trip this October! I put a deposit down earlier in the year and just paid the balance, so after telling the girls they began discussing ways to save up money for extras and also making a trip calendar! Now my wife is going to get me because they will talk about it every day, but that is the fun part IMHO! (not getting in trouble but the anticipation!!!)

Side note about the Dining Plan: I tried to make some changes to my ADR's and there was nothing avaialbe for what I was trying. BUSY

Good for you. Personally I think that the kids should know right from the start. When you plan it they should know. But I used to love surpises.

Our kiddies knew from the beginning, but that's because NOBODY in our house can keep a secret!!! Plus, their mommy is a Disney nut and planning freak. Also, we home school - so mommy is already planning lessons that will add to the trip. To keep their excitement somewhat contained we have:
1. Found the pressed penny machine website and are checking those out
2. Planning a Hidden Mickey photo hunt
3. Playing Disney World 20 questions each night before bed
and
4. Watching the Planning DVD over and over!!!!
(My son loves "The Bench Guy")
:p

I totally agree. We love to involve the kids in planning right from the beginning! It truly is half the fun of the vacation for our family. We have trip planning meetings, Disney themed of course, little games, quizes, prizes. Our big trip countdown calendar is always a hit! We start it 100 days before the trip and use Disney character stickers to mark off each day. Also, its an eye-opener for them with budgeting. My oldest wanted to stay 10 days at the Polynesian. I had him look up room rates online and do the math with our current vacation budget. That ended that discussion without a word of protest. :animwink:

But we do save a few surprises. Next trip, they'll be going to a Pirate & Princess Party. We're not telling them ahead of time - we'll just show up and let them have a ball at the party. Also, there a little things we do at WDW we don't tell them about ahead of time -- like riding in the front of the monorail or playing mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens.

Yay! I just love seeing the kids all excited! It makes the trip that much more fun.
Mine started watching our WDW home movies from past trips, this weekend. They are counting down the days too (102, so we're getting there. lol) They are working hard to save up their spending money and are working hard in school. We have also started evening walks that we call our "WDW training walks". While we walk, we talk about what we're going to see and do.

WOW!! I had to read that twice............at 1st I thought it said....Just SOLD the kids.....:D

Yeah! like I said.....I had to sell the kids to get back to Disney!

Actually, I had to keep it a secret because it did not look like we were going to be able to go this year due to other surprises earlier in the year (you all know..dental bills, AC in house to be replaced, etc.) and I did not want to disappoint anyone. So just last week Wannabebelle completed my package and I paid the balance! Also a side note I paid off my loan for that new AC unit in my house as well! COOL! No pun intended...

We had a similar discussion. The kids wanted to know how much it cost to go to WDW. So we calculated the price for our week stay, with 6 of us (4 of us and my adult sister and mom). My 9 year olds jaw dropped and he exclaimed,

"I THOUGHT DISNEY WORLD WAS A MAGICAL PLACE!!!!"

With all the Disney parks and movies, plus constant demand, Pixie Dust is at a premium right now. Until we can make more, the premium will remain.

Anyhow, glad to hear you sold the Kids, you and your wife should have a great time! Who'd you sell the kids to? I hear they are looking for some for Hong Kong's Small World, and possibly some more for our iasm and El Rio. So maybe you cauld pay a visit. You know what they say...the kids love working there so much they become attached to the place.

Have a great Trip!

We're taking our kids again this October and the kids LOVE the pressed penny machines. What is the website address you have? I'd love to be able to do a little homework before we leave. (We got about 20 pennies last year, we want new ones this year!)

Thanks!

In 2005 we surprised our sons with a trip, got it all on video. The look on their faces when we told them we weren't going to six flags, is as they say priceless. We go again in 9 days for a short tension release, just enough to hold us over till our annual trip in Nov. I don't know if I can make it to next Wed. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.... Ok, I'll be alright :D

I like the idea of involving the kids in the budget. That would save a lot of "I want....." if they realized how much the entire trip cost. I have spared them this experience in the past but not anymore - thanks!

Just as we arrive on property, I had each child an envelope with their Disney allowance in it and explaint that they may spend it any way they wish, but when it's gone - it's gone (& I've stuck to it each time). I help them with tax, but I do not allow them to overspend. Hmmm....now if I can learn not to overspend at WDW
