I just wish there was some sort of ..traffic control for scooters when the parks are at closing...last year it was pretty tricky navigating down Main Street with all the scooters...(I got run down a couple of times)....

Right. Why don't they have some kind of 'lane' for them, or stick to the right/left or something? that could easily solve the problem if it were common/ regular practice.

Disney should consider a 5th gate. A no walking gate. The whole thing is just one big omnimover, the whole park is on one large track that goes from one attraction/show to the next. It could be Wall-e themed.

well if some people believe that scooters should be banned from the parks, then they should ban strollers. I can't keep count of how many times the back of my legs, have been hit with them; and parents think because they have a stroller that you are supposed to move for them as if they are above everyone else. Or how about banning kids from the parks so we don't have to listen to there screaming and crying. Really you are going to let someone in a scooter, or a stroller or screaming kid ruin your trip?? I have encountered all of these situations and doesn't bother me!! IS THIS PERSON MORE UPSET OF THE SCOOTERS OR THAT THEY DIDN'T GET THEIR WAY AND DIDN'T GET THE ROOM REQUEST THEY WANTED, AND IS COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING TO WALK A DISTANCE, SO THEY ARE TAKING IT OUT ON THE HANDICAPPED? BE GRATEFUL AND THANKFUL YOU HAVE YOUR HEALTH, I WOULD BE CURIOUS HOW YOU WOULD REACT IF YOU HAD TO USE A SCOOTER AND PEOPLE WHERE TREATING YOU THE WAY YOU ARE JUDGING. You know just because a person in a scooter may not look handicapped doesn't mean they are perfectly healthy, they may need that scooter more than you think.

Oh my goodness, the scooter lane thing again!?!?! Didn't the last thread just quiet down like what, 6 days ago...and now again. I feel like I'm in the movie Groundhog Day every time scooters come up.

You point out the few times it didn't help you and actually took longer which I completely agree with bc I've been in the same situation with my mother. But you fail to mention how many times you didn't have to wait the actual wait time on some rides bc of a motorized vehicle or wheelchair. Yes some rides you wait in the normal line like everyone else, but some rides not.
IIRC, all attractions in AK and DHS are mainstreamed, although KS and GMR have separate loading areas, so there is no line cutting or shorter wait times there.

In Epcot, almost all attractions are mainstreamed except SSE. It uses an alternate entrance, and I have never NOT had a lengthy wait, even with FP.

MK, because many of the older rides were built before mainstreamed lines were even a thing, has the most rides with alternate entrances. Perhaps these are the rides you are thinking of, where you refer to cutting lines or not having to wait? Those rides would be JC, Space Mtn, BTMRR, the Carousel, and the Tea Party. The last 2 require you to wait at the exit, until a CM can admit you to the ride. I've never ridden either of these. JC has a separate HC waiting and boarding area. If you don't have a FP, and the ride is busy, HC guests are given a return time, usually equal to the standby time. In the past, we have occasionally had a relatively short wait for the accessible boat. It depends on how long since the boat sailed, and how many other wheelchair guests are already waiting. BTM uses the exit and a holding chute for HC guests. We've often waited a half hour in the sun before getting into the shade in the chute. But we've also gotten on the ride with only a 10 minute wait when the standby lines are short. When standby is long, they give out return times, just like JC. Space Mtn also gives out return time slips if you don't have a FP

PP and IASW are now hybridized, in that the main line is mainstreamed, but there is a detour to an alternate entrance, like TSM and Splash.

So, I don't know where you were cutting all those lines or not waiting your turn, but I'd sure like to know.

I did not read or participate in the last thread on this. Is a lane not a viable solution? Could be for strollers, too. If there was an established protocol, wouldn't this become a moot issue?

I don't have an issue with WDW scooter riders, per se, but I do get worried when I see the scooter gang...you know wearing their leather jackets, brandishing their nunchucks, smoking their new fangled e cigs, Abba blaring at a volume slightly louder than normal. Last trip they tried to bully me out of a snow globe purchase.

No, a 'lane' is not a viable solution.
Do tell.

ETA: And I promise that in the future I won't entertain such ridiculous notions.

Edit#2: I'm referring to a protocol while exiting the park. I know it wouldn't work during the day or throughout the park b/c of the paths. If I'm the one using the scooter, I don't want to have to worry about hitting someone (who may not be paying attn to it.) And if I'm walking, I don't want to have to worry about someone hitting me with one. This is obviously a recurring issue that affects the guest experience - so why isn't DisneyCo taking steps to address it or solve it? They are not powerless in this scenario.

Sooo...ignoring all the drama, I learned a few things on this thread (the first scooter thread I've read, didn't know there were so many.)

But it's been on my mind lately since DH had back surgery about 2 months ago, and we're going to WDW in less than a month.

He's only 44, not obese (kind of Baloo-shaped LOL) and not handicapped. That said, about 4 weeks into his 6-8 week recovery, he went back to work, and his back got worse, to the point he was concerned enough to go back to see the surgeon. The surgeon told him to calm down, it's to be expected after going back to work (after a month of being mostly sedentary.)

He's the type to suffer quietly rather than want to make a big deal or ruin plans, and I'm concerned about what happens if after day one he realizes it's just too much mega-walking. I've been meaning to look into options just to be prepared - wheelchair, scooter, etc. I would feel awful trying to drag him around the parks in pain. We have no need to cut lines or anything like that.

As it is, the plan is to take it slow, stop at every country at F&W LOL, and avoid marathon walks like Epcot to MGM (take the boat!) etc.

Otherwise I'm going to need a flag to put on the back of the wheelchair which reads: "back surgery" to head off the judgmental people lol.

Hopefully the slow pace is sufficient!

At the end of scooter thread I'm never sure which side I'm on. The side of the high and mighty who look down on anyone in a scooter who they "know" is not legitimately handicapped, or the side of the high and mighty who ALWAYS use scooters responsibly and only think of everyone else when they may be on their scooter. OK, the thread may die now.
And then there's the overweight b/c of legit medical issues that walk the parks anyway and suffer in pain due to medical issues but really need a scooter.
