Just back from first trip to WDW

Thought I'd share my experience from my first trip to WDW.

I've been to Disneyland Paris twice before and really enjoyed it, so I was really looking forward to it.

Firstly, the Magic Kingdom was quite dissapointing. It is much smaller than Paris and even though we went in September, still found it quite crowded. We also found it all to be quite old. We did really enjoy some attractions a lot - Philharmagic, Splash Mountain, The Haunted Mansion and Pirates were great. However, as we had already been on The Haunted Mansion and Pirates several times in Paris we found there wasn't too much that was new for us. Space Mountain was a dissapointment too - without the cannon blast and corkscrews in Paris it was a bit tame and even a little sore.

When we Fastpassed Space Mountain we got a surprise Fastpass for the Carossel of Progress. The people using Fastpass went in the right door and those in the normal queue went in the left door. They were pretty pointless as the theatre was roughly 1/8 full when the doors shut, so no matter what door we went in we could choose whatever seat we want. As for the attraction itself, while we could see how revolutionary it must have once been I am not joking when I say that the man next to us fell asleep during it, which says it all really.

Luckily though, the rest of the trip was EXCELLENT. I loved MGM, even though the Rock n' Rollercoaster was closed. We had done many of the attractions before in Paris - Star Tours, Backlot Tour, Lights Motors Action, Magic of Disney Animation, etc, but I can't say we were bothered. We knew it would be like that and the attractions were so enjoyable we didn't mind doing them again. The Tower of Terror was amazing and Fantasmic was spectacular. Only slightly strange thing was the Narnia attraction. Everyone just looked around at the end and sayed "Is that it?" and one kid said quite loudly "Well that was boring." I don't think anyone really understood the point. We also went to Universal and in comparison we all enjoyed MGM a lot more.

Epcot was also great. We went for two days and enjoyed them both. Soarin' was probably the best ride we went on, although my mother almost never went on it due to the signs saying "sudden drops and twists" outside, so it wasn't until we had been on it the first time that we eventually encouraged her on and she loved it. Test Track was lots of fun as well. Epcot did also have the least enjoyable attraction though - Ellen's Energy Adventure. I don't know what it was, but everyone just seemed bored through the whole thing. Another minor issue was Mission Space. In all the warning signs with all the warnings there were no mention of clostrophobia. I have had problems with that in the past and didn't really find it enjoyable and I don't think I would do it again. Most people seemed to love it though and if I didn't have a problem with the cramped space I'm sure I'd have loved it.

Animal Kingdom was my favourite park by far, to my complete surprise. I've never been an animal lover, in fact I am allergic, so I can't say I thought it would be most enjoyable experience for me, but it was. I had no problems with allergies, for some reason and loved all the animal exhibits. We did all the trials and all the little paths we could find and even came back another day to finish bits off. Expedition Everest was probably my favourite coaster I've ever been on. Scary enough, but not stomach turning.

We really couldn't imagine going back there in summer though, again the parks were very cramped and crowded despite it being off peak, esp. in MGM and Animal Kingdom. Mind you, the queues were fantastic. We practically walked onto everything, from Tower of Terror to Test Track, it was great. Soarin' and the Safari had the largest queues and we could simply Fastpass them and walk right on, so no trouble there at all, which was strange when you saw the number of people outside, but I assume its due to the high capacity of most of the rides.

I know I sound like I'm moaning a bit, but overall the whole holiday was great and I loved it. I would definately go back. The problems we had were pretty minor and didn't spoil things very much at all.

Animal Kingdom is my favorite park as well. I think we are in the minority!
Anyways - glad you had a good time overall and sorry about some of your disappointments. I think had you never been to any Disney parks you might have liked it more, but since you had similar rides to compare to, I can see how you would not enjoy them as much.

Go back to Paris then...Just kidding, glad to hear you still enjoyed yourself...Some things are just not for everybody...But the good thing is, you still had fun!

I have been to WDW and DLP and Dlp just didnt compare even though the castle at dlp was very nice magic kingdom does it for me every time and the castmembers in florida seem to be more polite and helpful some of the cast members in paris were rude and were chewing gum it just wasnt the same when in florida and there is a character about people joined orderly queues but not in paris my four year old and other children that were waiting to see donald duck were pushed in front of by 20 somethings because there was no cast member to accompany them it was a free for all.The parks were nice but Florida is where the heart is sorry :lookaroun

i'm also part of that minority that thinks AK is the best. It feels like you're in another world (or at least, other parts of this world). I love EE but the energy in AK cant be beat! Dinosaur is the best (more dark rides should be like this one) and there's nothing like jamming on the congas!

almost to single digits till i go ;)

But...I thought Carousel of Progress was for napping! LOL! Seriously, that's the only time I go on is when I need a nap...

And I'm not trying to be rude, but they do warn you about "dark, enclosed spaces"...then again, I'm not claustrophobic, so I'm not sure that it would raise alarm bells.

Glad you enjoyed your time anyway! I'm hoping to go to DLP next year ;)

Glad you have a great time and will be coming back. Welcome to the board.

I would like to offer my own take on a few things and that may make you feel better about some of your experiences and maybe not.

First MK, yes things are old, but you have to understand that the park is over 30 years old. The park is supposed to have an old time and nostalgic feel. The Carousel of Progress is supposed to show you "Walt's Vision of the Future" it is not meant to be updated or changed but give you a glimpse of what they were thinking in the past. Space Mtn. at MK was an intense coaster for when it was originally built. I think Disney wants to preserve the ride and give you the more intense experience on newer rides such as Rockin Rollercoaster and Everest.

As for the crowds there was a free dining promotion going on in Sept. that really increased the crowds at what used to be a slower time.

When you go back again I am sure you will be able to appreciacte some of the nostalgia of some rides that may not have changed much in the past 25-35 years. Maybe take the Keys to the Kingdom tour. It's a great tour and a great way to understand the vision for the original park.

.

I believe in the Mission Space warning signs and preshow video they use the phrase "made uncomfortable by enclosed dark spaces" or something similar. They dont quite use the word claustrophobic, but they get pretty close!

Glad you had a good trip overall!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I am sorry though that MK did not meet your expectations...I have never been to DLP so I cannot compare but I do know that WDW outshines DL by a longshot

I understand what many of you are saying.

I get that the Magic Kingdom is older than the other parks, but I guess I was just used to how new things felt at Paris.

As for what someone said about Cast Members at Paris, I would agree. All the Cast Members in Florida were nothing but fantastic, everytime we pulled out a park map there was someone beside us asking if we were lost and if they could help in anyway. Things are different in Europe - I don't know why but people are just left to get on with things themselves, its just a different culture I guess.

As for Mission Space, I had just assumed the dark, enclosed space meant your average dark simulator, but I guess I should have realised.

I guess it was just all to do with expectations. Here in the UK everyone sees WDW as one of the most amazing places on earth (quite rightly) and Paris as just a small copy. We went with the impression absolutely everything would be bigger and better than what we had experienced before. Had we expected less I imagine we would have been more impressed.

Again though, I cant stress enough how minor the issues were. The holiday was fantastic and we loved it.

With florida there is just so much more than WDW its everything else the atmosphere and dare i say it other parks (oops i did say it but we all like seaworld very much too you cant beat a visit to shamu) but saying that my sister in law first went to wdw then again a year later that was 12 years ago and every year since has been at least once a year to dlp and she preferrs the later she doesnt do the big rides she mainly does the shops thats why she doesnt go to florida because coming from the uk we tend to stay for two weeks so she would need to be sponsored by the bank of england!:ROFLOL:we are trying to convince to come back

Just to chime in here, but I tend to think that whichever Disney park you go to first, whether DLP, WDW, DL or DLHK, that first one will always be what you compare the others to. For me, WDW was my first ever Disney park and for that, it will always and forever be in my heart and hold the most nostalgia.
