Jungle Cruise Re-Imagining

There’s nothing intrinsically racist about MK’s Sam (I don’t think) in terms of his appearance- he’s cartoony and not really characteristic of any particular race/culture. The most “problematic” thing about him is collecting shrunken heads which can be construed as belittling or mocking other cultures I suppose, but by being played as a joke softens (it’s almost making fun of the guests riding more). Perhaps using the same figure but changing the props might make it more inclusive.

it’s different than the “natives” who are portrayed as backwards or primitive.
Dude, it’s racist AF

This is why Disney has a diverse committee making recommendations for how they can increase diversity and inclusion in the parks. Because in order for us to decide what is and isn’t racist, we really need to listen to others.
A lot of us are willing to listen, we just want explained answers.

It’s easy to have a misconception whether certain things are offensive or inoffensive. If we don’t explain our reasons, those misconceptions will never be cleared up.

I mean. The bar won’t go anywhere: and the name doesn’t really mean much to me. Just call it “The Tiki Tiki Bar” and let’s move on.
I’m not sure what else there is to talk about. Nor do I think many of us are too partial to the Trader Sam character. I see no reason why we can’t have a mature discussion on it. But if nobody wants to, that’s fine.

They have names already.

Enchanted Tiki Bar
Grog Grotto

So I’m not as worried about the bars. They are my favorite places on property. They make a lot of money. If they closed I’d be devastated...

Can we talk about how ABSURD it was that they were all wearing masks in a video!?? Insane

Well, it wasn't filmed with a selfie-stick (I know that because they are banned!). The mask was there to protect the production crew and other participants in the video. Also, consistent example goes along way in getting compliance with mask wearing in the parks and for projecting the image of taking safety seriously. Does not strike me as absurd or insane at all.

I will try....

I think one overarching issue with the entire attraction would be that it is inherently about colonialism and because of its age it is overt about stereotypes that have long since been understood to be offensive. Beyond TS (which absolutely reinforces what I am about to say), the ride's main thrust is the idea that there is nothing but primitive things out in the jungles. There is no sophistication or advancement. Just animals and people who would misunderstand and attack "western explorers". It treats the people and cultures of the jungles as "oddities" vs just presenting a slapstick trip through the jungles with a delirious skipper. There is a balance there, and I think Disney is seeking to find a better one.

(I would love to see it become more satirical at the expense of the explorers. It seems like they are hinting that way. Heck, they are adding a sinking boat to a ride with a boat that recently sank!)

Oh, also, while we’re at it- The menu at skipper canteen is not inclusive at all. I demand that they add more vegan, gluten free, farm fresh, non-GMO, multi-gratitional and cruelty-free options.

It really hurts my feelings every time I go to the park and see these jarring problems with skipper canteen and the jungle Cruise. I just can’t believe how people are so inconsiderate towards my sensitive and fragile feelings. I guess I’m just more woke than everybody else

Well, I guess that's that. Better ride HM as much as you can, folks-the hanging man in the stretching room will be next. Enjoy the classic attractions while you can, because in 10 years from now, WDW will be very different.

Rather than listen I think we need to talk. When you replace one person’s opinion with another, no matter how well meaning you are saying that one person is right and another is wrong & also that some opinions have more value. Two way discussions help both sides understand the other which in turn helps us all to understand how we can change and grow.
